I work for an IT company that teaches disabled vets how to use the internet so yes I would subscribe to that subreddit and perhaps pass it along to the guys I train.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 5 points6 points ago

Thank you.

[–]beepboopblorp 5 points6 points ago

My sister just started working as a therapist in a V.A. hospital. I might pass this along to her.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

I would appreciate it!

[–]hitlersshit 1 point2 points ago

Why not just have a subreddit for all disabled people? or all vets?

[–]user2196 13 points14 points ago

Because there are a lot of programs specifically available to disabled veterans that are not available to disabled non-veterans or able-bodied vets.

[–]hitlersshit 0 points1 point ago

but uitd

[–]AutonomousRobot 4 points5 points ago

User2196 hit it on the head. The veteran and military healthcare/bureaucracy system is completely different and much more complex than the civilian side. The two honestly would deserve two separate sub-reddits.

[–]hitlersshit 1 point2 points ago

The way it sounds is more and more like a subreddit for all vets.

[–]IrrelevantLOTRquote 1 point2 points ago

The power of the Three Rings is ended. The time has come... for the dominion of Men!

[–]RustisMaximus 1 point2 points ago

The disability subreddit is now a place for some dude to blogspam. I unsubbed long ago.

That really sucks that you were lied to by the people who should be trying to help you. Also, I knew a guy who served in vietnam and had issues related to one of the rainbow agents. It was insane the shit he went through trying to get help from the military. After years in court he eventually did get help, but they of course did it in a way that didn't really say "one of the rainbow agents caused this", but at least he got help.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

It can be a real pain in the ass to get anything from the government. I'm hoping that this sub-reddit will help some of those who have issues and need help the access to some good information or at least some help from other vets who have experienced similar problems.

[–]bananasncornbread 10 points11 points ago

I know a couple guys I'll point in that direction. Would you suggest it to vets that are having a hard time adjusting or who suffer PTSD?

[–]crackpnt69[S] 9 points10 points ago*

Looking to cater to all vets. Provide information of places to get help and we are always willing to talk to other vets. I suffer from PTSD and a few other ailments.

[–]turtmcgirt 6 points7 points ago

the vet center is a great resource for readjustment counseling http://www.vetcenter.va.gov/ they also offer counseling for military sexual trauma.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

no really if you have ED you can get a rating.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

PLEASE OPEN THIS SUBREDDIT!!

[–]hitlersshit -4 points-3 points ago

If all vets then why is it called disabledvets? Why not just plain old vets?

[–]Mufflin 2 points3 points ago

/r/Veterans exists but it is not very active. Many military personnel are about to start re-entering civilian life, with the draw-down of Iraq and the end of combat troops in Afghanistan on the horizon. They'll be faced with unemployment, overcrowded community colleges with dwindling budgets, and years of stress, loss, and trauma, as well as too much time to think about what happened and how being in a combat zone affects your personality. I think a reddit catered toward addressing these specific issues would be great.

[–]Foxtrot56 2 points3 points ago

Goodbye GI bill :(

Seriously though I don't expect them to keep our benefits at the current level. They already expect you to get a job between semesters.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

There is a program through your states work force that can guarantee job for vets. Its not a lot of hours but if your going to school it will pay for some bills.

[–]Foxtrot56 1 point2 points ago

I might look into it, but honestly I am not really interested in getting a job right now. I go to school from 11:00-7:30 during the week, and then a lot of homework. I could make time for a job but I feel that if I end up with a test or anything else I would lose study time.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

I completely understand just a suggestion if times get really bad.

[–]hitlersshit 0 points1 point ago

But then it's not for disabledvets. It's for all recent vets.

[–]Mufflin 4 points5 points ago

I don't know why you're concerned with the semantics of "disabled." In the end the purpose seems to be to help vets who feel disabled in one way or another from their time in service.

[–]hitlersshit -3 points-2 points ago

In the end the purpose seems to be to help vets who feel disabled in one way or another from their time in service.

LOL that's not the problem. The problem is that this subreddit has no focus. It seems like it's meant for all vets and not just disabled ones. And I don't think that stress or depression count as disabilities.

[–]tmc_throwaway 1 point2 points ago

Silence, fuhrersturd!

[–]crackpnt69[S] -1 points0 points ago

Obviously you never served in a combat. Why don't you grow a pair and join up? The least you could do is give back to your country for the freedoms you have... and yes you have freedoms so stop being a little bitch and spend some time over seas

[–]hitlersshit -1 points0 points ago

Why don't you grow a pair and join up?

Oh lol you are so brave going to other countries to blow shit up! Yeah I bet you joined to watch cool explosions, kill people, and get paid, not to serve your country. So stop wasting my time with your bullshit.

[–]crackpnt69[S] -1 points0 points ago

get paid? lol you know nothing about the military my friend.

[–]gemini_dream 0 points1 point ago

Only someone who has never seen or experienced crippling depression or PTSD could possibly say something like this.

[–]hitlersshit -1 points0 points ago

Oh I think it counts as a disorder sure. But not a disability. That's just my opinion though, you are free to have your own opinion. ;-)

[–]gemini_dream 1 point2 points ago

A disability is defined as a condition that interferes with a major life activity. Pretty sure both of these count.

[–]crackpnt69[S] -1 points0 points ago

It is mainly for all vets either applying for disability or currently disabled vets but some current vets may not know when they can get for issues that have sustained during their service.

[–]Firewind 5 points6 points ago

Would reform of the VA be one of the focuses?

[–]crackpnt69[S] 6 points7 points ago

Its the number one change anyone would ask for.

[–]Ambivalent_Fanatic 1 point2 points ago

This is of interest to me even though I am not a vet because of a research project I'm working on. Can I just ask you this: in a nutshell, what sorts of reforms are needed at the VA for disabled vets?

[–]Mufflin 2 points3 points ago

One of the largest issues right now is a backlog of disability claims. This is when military personnel exit active duty service and are given medical exams to determine if their time in the military has injured them in ways serious enough to be compensated for.

So, if they determine Private Bob's PTSD has seriously affected his ability to lead a normal life, the VA will give him 30 or 50% of his last paycheck tax free for the rest of his life. The problem is that it may take over a year after exiting the military before this process is started, leaving a lot of seriously disabled veterans to suffer in the meantime. This backlog is also getting worse.

The compensation is awesome, but most veterans are not happy with how they end up getting rated. Yes, they try to rake out the greedy fakers, and for good reason, but most vets I know feel their pains are not being addressed and they are not receiving compensation for things they technically should be. In addition to this problem, there is a stoic culture in the military that keeps many people from seeking care while in active duty, and as a result they don't have any evidence to show that they were injured, or that something was a recurring problem. This system probably needs to be more dynamic.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

A big issues is the lack of personnel in the VA. I have met my fair share of employees of the VA and their work load is rather ridiculous. Certain political figures say Americans need jobs to help the economy well the VA could really use a good influx of people and pay for what they do.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

I think that this is a brilliant idea. My boyfriend is an injured vet and he has PTSD, I would LOVE a place where I could learn more about it and perhaps find things that could help him through dark times? Thank you so much for doing this!

[–]crackpnt69[S] 1 point2 points ago

One of my main goals is to be able to arrange meet ups for vets. I suffer from PTSD and depression and spend most of my time drinking alone. If I could get out at least once a month to meet other people I feel it may help. (I live to far from any facility for counseling so this is kinda my way of reaching out I guess)

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Awesome! thanks.

[–]anonoman925 3 points4 points ago

As an American I am very sad our country has not created it's own "forum" for you guys.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

The "forum" is slowly building! but any help until then is grateful!

[–]CharlesKane 2 points3 points ago

If you are a service disabled veteran and own a business you can qualify to be an SDVO (Service disabled veteran owned) business. This puts you into a special category that the government must spend an allotted amount of money on. Just a friendly reminder.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

you should post some information on this to the sub-reddit. Thanks!

[–]The_Lobbyist 1 point2 points ago

My firm is doing a lot of work on disabled veterans issues right now. I'd be glad to post all the research I've been doing when I get into work tomorrow.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

That would be great! Thank you.

[–]what_an_ass 5 points6 points ago

If you want to create a subreddit than just do it. Only takes a a few seconds.

If you build it, they will come.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

I did :P just wanted to know how many vets were out there!

[–]battleshits 1 point2 points ago

You should do it man. I know quiet a few that were fucked by the system more than the landmines, bullets and knives that tore their bodies to peaces. And they would be interested in it. I'll forwards them this.

Edit : missed a word.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Let them know even if you were denied your not completely out of hope. You can always reapply with new information and we can help!

[–]krapdaddy 3 points4 points ago

This needs to happen. Let's get it done.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

working on it!

[–]lurker818 2 points3 points ago

Not personally, but I am not opposed to Disabled Veterans having their own sub.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Good enough for me.

[–]himynameisg 2 points3 points ago

Nope.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

:( sorry you feel that way.

[–]RadiatedMutant 1 point2 points ago

On behalf of my father, a 61 year old Vietnam Army vet, I thank you for this.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

No problem! have your father join and share his experience! you can even speak for him.

[–]RadiatedMutant 0 points1 point ago

I'd have to do the typing and reading, he's illiterate.

[–]onehealthymoose 1 point2 points ago

all thanks to crackpnt69

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

:P thanks just looking to help other!

[–]corwin80 1 point2 points ago

Yes, most definitely; I like so many disabled veterans like me have difficulty finding the necessary programs I need and the V.A., though they mean well and I don't envy them their job, seem unable to help more often than not. So this sort of thing would be most helpful.

[–]ScizRGaming 0 points1 point ago

My dad is a doctor at the VA so I could always ask him some questions

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

That would be good but not looking for information on how to cheat the system just maybe some information on what paper work would help someones claim.

[–]jdcooktx 1 point2 points ago

not disabled, just a vet. this is a great idea.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

If you know something or think you might have a claim I welcome you and everyone!

[–]tmc_throwaway 1 point2 points ago*

Neither disabled, nor a vet, but I think it would be a good idea.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm hoping so.

[–]redditeurope 1 point2 points ago

I am not

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Its ok.

[–]someonefarted 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for this! Definitely subscribing.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 1 point2 points ago

hope to see you on the forums!

[–]Whenthenighthascome 1 point2 points ago

Hell yes. Points for creating this. People need this no matter what they may say. Thanks so much for having the idea. Great work!

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]Tyrien 0 points1 point ago

I have absolutely no interest in a subreddit like this, but will upvote it anyway because I can see how some would appreciate it.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

thanks!

[–]Gavalar 0 points1 point ago

Good idea

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

thanks!

[–]TheNiceMan 0 points1 point ago

Yes

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

thanks!

[–]RewenX -1 points0 points ago

this is a stupid idea. they need a regular internet forum where that crap can be stickied.

[–]crackpnt69[S] 0 points1 point ago

lol I will keep that in mind.
