Works for cracked, black MacBooks, too. The flaw is that the two flanges on the top of the screen press against the bottom case at a point where there is no reinforcement, causing it to crack over time.

I am a Specialist in an Apple Retail store, and I think you all should know some stuff.

Three out-of-warranty topcase replacements for a MacBook is generally the limit before Apple stops doing it for free.

If you are kind (and reasonable), you can almost always have things your way at the Genius Bar. The Geniuses are all allowed to override repair costs and more- though some stores give them a limit as to how many they can do in a day, some require manager approval.

In my store, it's standard policy to honor the limited 1-year warranty if it expired within the last 90 days. We'll honor AppleCare up to 6 months out of warranty.

A new (and fairly secret) Apple policy states that (at the Genius' discretion), liquid damaged iPhones can be replaced if only one liquid-submersion indicator is tripped (there's one in the headphone jack, one in the dock, two inside).

Uhh... There's a random collection of jumbled facts for you!

Oh, and if your computer breaks three times in a year (or you have been terribly inconvenienced), they generally give you a new one. This doesn't mean that you'll get a new computer if you bitch, in fact you are MUCH less likely to get anything you want if you complain (the geniuses really do have a lot of freedom).

I had this done in September. I just scheduled a Genius Bar appointment, they looked at it, asked me the usual "has it been abused" type questions, and 4 hours later I went back & picked it up.

This was on a November 2007 SR MacBook, and I was nearly 1 year out of warranty (no AppleCare). I think later ones did have the improved top case which does not have this problem.

They call it a "quality program" and you may walk out feeling they've got the attitude of "we did you a favor this time" (at least that was the vibe I got). If it happens a second time, I'm not sure they'll cover it.

Any idea if this would work for the same plastic right above the screen, near the plastic tabs that rest on the palmrest when shut? I hope I'm describing this right. My white MacBook basically is cracking a little bit at the very top, right above the screen. I've already had the palmrest replaced once.

Are the MacBooks significantly different from the iBooks? My iBook had become discoloured but I found I could just erase it with a pencil eraser.

I had mine replaced for free a few months ago. (They replace the entire keyboard/palm rest area). But, it looks like it's starting to wear down again. What a ridiculous design flaw.

I can confirm this. The palmrest on my wife's MacBook was cracked and out-of-warranty, but they replaced the damaged panel for free.

Sweet. I might take advantage of this if I'm ever going to be in the vicinity of an Apple store. My palm rest is cracked, but I also spilled cranberry juice on my keyboard a couple years ago and the trackpad button has stuck ever since so I might come out of this ahead.

I just had it done a few weeks ago. I told them I wanted to get it in before they ran out of parts for the old model, and they told me not to worry about it. It was replaced free of charge, in about an hour.

On the phone with them right now and they are denying me the ability to bring it in. While there are some who say Apple's service is fantastic, I've run into this time and time again. As they get bigger, their customer service gets worse. You are screwed if it's out of warranty.
