Fielder is a great player, but I have a hard time thinking that giving any player that kind of money is a good investment. Same goes with Pujols - perhaps it is also how long both of the deals are that worries me.

I saw the Rangers get fucked by overpaying for the best ($250 mil for A-Rod). The Angels and Tigers are in a different situation - they both have very good teams without the big name additions, so perhaps the decision will pay off for them.

In the end, I think the Rangers made the right decision; they could not afford both Hamilton and Fielder and I think Hamilton was the better choice.

Well the Rangers just put down about 1/5th of that A-Rod contract just for the chance to talk to Darvish - then another 1/5th of that contract to sign him. That's all for a guy who hasn't thrown a MLB pitch...

True, but the Rangers have also been scouting him quite closely since 2004. I trust they know what they are doing. The signs are all there for him to be a middle of the rotation starter at the minimum. Obviously he is being paid to be better than that, but I don't see him turning into a flop.

For some players, it might not make sense in terms of winning more baseball, but financially it may be a good buy. A-Rod at the yankees was a enormous deal for someone who is evidently already declining, but they will sell enormous amounts of tickets and merch, particularly if/when he starts approaching the home run record. He may not help the yankees win more titles, and by the end he may even hinder them, but he'll make them money.

The top free agent of any sport is going to get vastly overpaid, they are for suckers. Smart teams don't need that shit.

That's more than Mitt Romney's daily income.

If somebody told me I could make that much every year for the next 9 years, I'd ask where to sign.

Approximately $148,000 per game. $5,400 per out.

No player is worth that much money for that length of a contract. He will not be the same in the last couple of years of the contract but he will still be getting paid.

This number is technically wrong because you forgot to account for leap years.

That's a lot of taxes too.
