Giving advice to a firm, need some of my own by 4_teh_lulzin webdev

[–]4_teh_lulz 0 points1 point ago

It's likely possible, I haven't actually sat down with them and gathered their requirements. So I'm basing it off of a ground up approach.

It would be similar in scope to a site like this.

Either way, I have no time right now to do it so I want to point them in the right direction.

Mitt Romney: Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside Home Or Lose Benefits by davidnivenin politics

[–]4_teh_lulz 2 points3 points ago

Change the word "required" to "incentivized" and I think this would be a great idea.

You then have someone who is desirable by the job market instead of someone who has been unemployed for months or years.

Rackspace insight? by twisterghostin webdev

Amazon Web Services is the way to go IMO.

Depending on the needs of your site you can get it to run for free for the first year. Free Usage

And after that it is still pretty cheap.

They also have all the other tools you would ever need as well, like CDNs, and Load Balancers integrated into the same management portal.

Backups and redundancy are also really easy to manage with their snapshot tools.

It's trivial to run an entire web operation with them.

Did you put together an RFP for it? If so, post it and I'm sure someone will be able to give you a legitimate estimate. Or possibly link to old site w/ requirements for new?

Best place to hire a web developer/programmer? by companyhenin webdev

[–]4_teh_lulz 1 point2 points ago

The honest to goodness best thing to do is to get your job posting out to a bunch of different places.

Craigslist, Monster, Indeed, etc.

You won't ever find the right applicant posting in just one place. Everyone checks different places for job postings.

You have to do the work of "wading through the mud", so to speak and find the gems.

Hello. I am a graphic designer looking for prime hosting in the LA area. Googling yields me spam everywhere so I was wondering if you could assist? by joevadedin web_design

[–]4_teh_lulz 0 points1 point ago

Unless you want access to your servers physically for some reason I would suggest using Amazon Web Services (AWS).

For smaller sites the hosting would be totally free for an entire year. and the pricing after that is extremely competitive. Cheapest I've been able to find.

They also have Something called Simple Email Service (SES) which would allow you to do the bulk emailing you require.

I am 21 and just found out that my father has been keylogging me. How am I supposed to handle this? by CDangerin AskReddit

Agree -- let's hope there's some corroborating evidence as well.

It's Windows XP On Firefox -- maybe it's possible he knows that's what his dad uses at work...

Nevertheless, good for pointing this out as you may have saved him from making a serious mistake.

Looking for alternatives to WCF by 4_teh_lulzin webdev

Thanks for this!

Yea so I've been mulling over that list for a few days on the bottom of the Wikipedia page there that you linked to.

I've used WCF and MVC before and am fairly familiar with them (at work)

But since this is a side project I'm trying to avoid paying for Windows Servers or any licensing costs in general... I was hoping there were a few better open source alternatives...

Do you have experience with any of those listed? Or have you just in the past written your own implementations? What do you like least/most about them?

It's cool...

I think I may have confused my post a bit so ill re write it here...

I'm looking for a good framework for a RESTful API that my web apps can consume.

Right now the only one I know of with any real traction is the framework that Microsoft offers, WCF.

Ideally it's an open source framework with a strong community around it .

I've already considered writing my own but I'm trying to avoid reinventing the wheel.

I'm open to any RESTful framework implementation -- I say SOAP because it is what I am familiar with the most... but I am by no means stuck on it :)

Is it possible to gain muscle with endurance training? by [deleted]in Fitness

[–]4_teh_lulz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your goal for endurance training should be to stay weight neutral, that is calories in = calories out. No more no less. It is not uncommon for endurance athletes to gain weight while training for events as well. I suggest you pick up the book, "Endurance Sports Nutrition" and read it. It has a ton of useful information.

Edit: your body composition is quite literally mine and that book was extremely useful for me.
