Sorry for the flash, but what makes the M16 better than the garland action? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

[–]BattleHall 0 points1 point ago

My understanding is that the Ljungman uses a blind hole in the bolt carrier with a rigid gas tube (similar to the AS50), which is functionally a piston but I'd be less inclined to quibble on that one. But the AR BCG is definitely a piston. A cylindrical inner and outer structure, into which a pressurized fluid is introduced, forcing the inner and outer structures in opposite linear directions, and with some sort of seal at the mating surfaces to contain the pressure, is pretty much the exact definition of a piston. If you really want to split hairs, it's a spigot style piston (in which the main moving body is the exterior, not the interior structure), but that's not uncommon, even on some other AR "piston" conversions. If it's not a piston, then what is it?

Yes, the BCG. I don't know what you are trying to prove; how exactly do you think a DI AR works?

Reddit, what food must you make from scratch rather than buy from a store? by JennaBug6272in Cooking

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

I've found one easy way to do a lot of kraut is to use a large round Cambro container (found at restaurant supply places) and weight down the cabbage with a turkey roasting bag full of water. The water bag conforms to the shape of the container, which prevents the surface mold from forming, plus you can watch the kraut ferment since the container is transparent.

It's formed by the space in between the bolt and the bolt carrier.

Does anybody else live in the middle of nowhere? by Kossa2013in texas

[–]BattleHall 4 points5 points ago

Don't know if he's on Reddit, but a friend of mine's girlfriend's dad lives on a mountain top in West Texas out near Ft. Davis. He's seriously in the middle of nowhere, yet has super high-speed internet, because the mountaintop he lives on is also the site for a relay tower for the McDonald Observatory (he helps maintain the equipment).

TIL there is such a thing as Nuclear Batteries and they are used in satellites. by Glorfonin todayilearned

Nuclear batteries were also used in a spy post on top of the Himalayas. Unfortunately, they also lost one up there.

Any word on anyone else making brass? I like what I've seen of the Creedmoor, I'm just not sure I like relying on Hornady for brass. Ideal would be getting Lapua in, but they have their own 6.5 solution (6.5x47?).

DI AR's do have a piston, as I noted, so you'd be wrong. Sorry.

Are you a medical professional or something? I've never known anyone but med personnel to know about that, or, are you like me and were unlucky enough to be on the receiving end?

Neither; I just found out about it a while back and thought it was an ingenious solution. Apparently it has become very common in emergency and battlefield medicine, especially with the advent of the guns, and allows for very fast, high volume infusions, especially in situations where there may have been burns or other injuries that make finding a vein difficult. But yeah, it looks like it hurts like hell.

When was the last time you used a forward-assist? by jklip13in ar15

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

Because just about any semi-auto without a reciprocating charging handle needs some sort of forward assist, and that little cutout in the BCG kind of fails the "gross motor skills" test.

In addition to what everyone else has said about reduced reciprocating weight, another advantage of AR-style direct impingement is the straight line recoil. DI AR systems actually do have a piston, but instead of being separate and mounted to the barrel, it's formed by the space between the bolt and the bolt carrier (that's why the bolt has those gas rings). Combined with the bolt lugs, receiver extension (buffer tube) and straight comb stock, that means all the recoil force and reciprocating parts are all on the same axis directly back to the point of contact on the shoulder. This helps prevent the rising action created during recoil, especially during full auto fire. This also keeps the sights on target, allowing for quicker followup shots (and why the stock iron sights are so high above the bore axis).

The range is right on the edge of Lake Erie facing the water, and all the "downrange" part of the lake is off limits to boats.

J&G still have a fair number of Model 64's (DAO only), and Bud's has some heavy barrel Model 10's, both around $270.

Rule #4 by BLVDin guns

[–]BattleHall 8 points9 points ago

Also important to note: Unless you are at Camp Perry, water is a very poor choice for a backstop. Rounds can easily skip off the surface of the water, meaning your shots can go places you never would expect.

Well its finally done! Savage 30-30/.225 by Irish_SumBitchin guns

[–]BattleHall 3 points4 points ago*

Whoa whoa whoa, in that case do not use .225 Win ammo in it. .225 Winchester was a 30-30 casing that was necked down to .22 caliber to essentially create a rimmed varmint round. It is not interchangeable with 30-30 in the same gun. What the magazine is most likely indicating is that they made the 840/340 in at least two different chamberings, 30-30 and .225 Win, and that that magazine could be used in either, not that both rounds could be used in the same gun.

once they fail in the normal areas(crook of your elbow, top of your hand) I'll tell them to try in areas that make a lot of people pass out or sick or whatever, such as my wrist, a finger, ankle, whatever.

Tell 'em to just skip all that pansy shit and go straight to an intraosseous infusion. They even make neat little guns if you're in a hurry.
