UXO is actually pretty common in German; last year, they defused a 1.8 ton aerial mine that was found in the Rhine.

Looking for the name of a rocket with a 7km range, made by China, and sold by Iran. by dick_long_wigwamin Military

The Iranians have many different artillery rockets. You might be thinking of the 107mm Haseb rocket, which is based on the Chinese Type 63.

Is there a gun design open to the public domain? by jlebrechin guns

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

The only issue with "open source" guns is that unless you have the ability to run unlimited simulations and finite element analysis, there's really no easy way to have the reiterative design process from many individual contributors that is characteristic of open source software. There are, however, many different gun designs that are off patent, and many others that simply don't have patentable elements due to prior art. You could also look into something like the H.E.A.P. from Cryptonomicon, or the guns built by the IRA during the Troubles.

my ankle shotgun. by willisrockin guns

Let me get this straight: You took a headshot, at 20 yards, at a 260lb buck, using a .410 derringer loaded with buckshot? I've heard some pretty irresponsible shot selection stories, but that just might beat all. And I don't believe for a second you patterned inside 4" at 20 yards.

EDIT: Hell, even you don't believe that patterning bullshit:

with buckshot it will shoot a pattern as tight as your head at 15 feet. at 30 feet its as big as a beach ball.

With what load and at what range? I'm not saying you're a liar, but unless it was a "putting down" shot it's either that or you're awfully irresponsible.

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

Well, the person shooting it might have something to fear. You'll be lucky to get ~650fps for a buckshot load, and .410 buckshot has notoriously awful sectional density and penetration. It's better than a sharp stick, but it's not exactly a room clearer.

Inherent accuracy isn't conditional accuracy, and it's not predicated on shooting in a gravity-less vacuum. When trying to determine the absolute accuracy of a round, they're often shot in a tunnel range with a test barrel rig, which tend to have short, fat barrels. Short range benchrest shooters tend to use shorter, fatter barrels chambered in cartridges with unusually good internal ballistics, because at that range wind drift isn't nearly as much of an issue. I think you're reading way too much into what I said originally. Of course everything is going to be a tradeoff; you wouldn't want to shoot a 6" .300WM any more than you would a 48".

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

Wait, what does deflection have to do with gravity? Increased muzzle velocity provides a number of advantages, but other than pushing out the transonic region it doesn't help with inherent accuracy. Where it does help is with things like wind calls.

I didn't say that a shorter barrel is always the best choice, only that they generally tend to be more accurate, which in a mechanical sense is true. Of course, for a given application, one has to decide what trade-offs are necessary.

[–]BattleHall 1 point2 points ago

No, it is true. Adding length to a barrel increases velocity, but not accuracy, and all other things being equal a shorter barrel will generally be more accurate because it is stiffer and therefore has better harmonics.

AFAIK they've never had a significant number of .357 trade-ins, and I haven't seen any there in a while.

Sounds like you may not be holding it correctly. Do you have it tight in the pocket of your shoulder?

Most ranges I've been to are fine with chamber flags.

Moronic Monday for 5/21/2012 by drewmsmithin guns

[–]BattleHall 4 points5 points ago

FWIW, unless you are using irons and need the sight radius, shorter barrels actually tend to be more accurate, due to being stiffer for a given diameter.

It's actually almost impossible to setback a .22LR bullet, because it is heeled. You can, however, knock them out of round (non-concentric).

Yes, if you ever want to configure it with a short (<16") barrel*, you will need an SBR stamp.

(*assuming it started life as a rifle.)

AFAIK it doesn't, since it doesn't meet the live fire requirement.
