Free Apress book today: Metro Revealed: Building Windows 8 apps with HTML5 and JavaScript by Benjiggain learnprogramming

I've always been happy with their books. Their series is how I was able to go from knowing close to nothing about programming to having software development as my career in about two years.

I only "ordered" the book so I can return to download it later. Their site is definitely being hammered.

Unless you have zero interest in learning how to program and do web development (which I'm assuming there is an interest by you simply posting in this group), don't listen to capnjeremy's suggestion.

A project like this is perfect for getting into web programming.

HTML and CSS are definitely base-line skills for web development and must be known for anything deeper. From there you will need a few additional skills to complete a site like this:

  • Understanding of a server side language (PHP, ASP.NET, etc.)
  • Understanding of databases (You will most likely be using either MySQL or MSSQL)
  • And finally, although not necessarily required, it is strongly recommended you know Javascript.

I would strongly suggest you learn them in the order they're listed. Unless you're relying on internal application API's, you don't need to know Javascript until the application is nearly complete. Internal API's are some pretty deep stuff and I would strongly suggest not using them if you're just learning.

I began my trek into the web development world by getting my feet wet in PHP. I had several support connections for learning C# ASP.NET, so that's what I eventually went with.

There are countless resources online for learning either language. Let me know if you need any more advice :)

What's your current knowledge in web development?

May I ask why you need it in Visual Studio? MSDN would be more current than a Visual Studio help section.

Not saying it's okay, but it could have been someone that was already trying to stay unnoticed by police.

What's the most interesting thing you can't share with anyone you know? by Gawkesin AskReddit

Seek help ... seriously. Going along the same lines as it making sense to seek medical treatment for high blood pressure or diabetes, depression is a condition your body is going through.

There seems to be this stigma on Reddit about getting medication "pushed" on you, but if you're in need of treatment, don't avoid it simply to get back at pharmacological companies. I was depressed for years and after I sought medical treatment and began taking an anti-depressant, it went away and I wished that I had done it sooner.

You don't have to put up with it, seek help.
