TROPHY CASE

"Diva Dance" from the Fifth Element mimicked perfectly. Thought it was impossible? Here it is: by jNaNa420in videos

[–]Booster21 5 points6 points ago

Last time this video was posted, someone made the same point and it was pointed out that the lower register was probably the part that was artificially enhanced/exaggerated. Due to the fact that it would mean the original singer would have an unheard off octave range, or something similar.

[Hiring] User Interface Engineer for PLAYSTATION 3 by sonyJSJobin javascript

[–]Booster21 2 points3 points ago

For me, it's not that I don't think I'd get the job if I applied, or anything like that. I don't apply for them because having something like that listed as a 'requirement' in your official job spec tells me a fair bit about the culture inside the company.

[–]Booster21 4 points5 points ago

Can I just point something out? This isn't just a problem with your job spec, seen it many times.

I don't want this to sound arrogant, but here goes.

I'm a UI developer with about seven years experience; I've created or been a core contributor to many JS libraries that you've heard of; I've spoken about Node at big conferences; I've worked with some of the leading people in the industry and some of the biggest companies in the world; I once wrote a AS3 syntax wrapper for JS; I've been commissioned by Adobe to create canvas based animation for them to show people, as examples of how well it compares to Flash. In short: if I lived in the US or were looking for a new job, I'd might be perfect or it.

But you know what? I don't have a CS degree (or any of the other kinds of degrees you stipulate) so I wouldn't even bother applying.

There are a LOT of people like me. You're probably missing out on all of them.

I'm looking to register an '.se' domain but don't want to use GoDaddy if I can help it - any suggestions? by samplebitchin webdev

[–]Booster21 0 points1 point ago

Please bear in mind you need to have a Swedish personal number or company registration number to buy .se domains.

You probably know this already if you're actively looking for places to buy them, but I though I'd mention anyway!

Hey /r/javascript, what are some libraries that aren't well known but you use all the time? by BlitzTechin javascript

[–]Booster21 25 points26 points ago

Some may be more well known than others, but in an attempt to avoid the Backbone's and Knockout's of the world, here goes:

  • EaselJs - For working with Canvas.
  • PDF.js - A Mozilla experiment to try and render PDF's in the browser with no native code support.
  • URI.js - An really useful lib for working with URL's
  • Session.js - I cannot begin to explain how useful this can be, seriously, check it out.
  • Turn.js - Canvas based page flip, really useful for certain UI elements.
  • TinyCon - For doing all kinds of cool things with Favicon alerts (similar to Gmail.

This is just a tiny collection of the liubs I've collected in various places over the years, let me know and I'll post more.

tl:dr check out Session.js, seriously.

Absolutely right, so other great packages available via PC:

  • Gist; super quick Gist creation on Github.
  • ZenCoding; makes HTML markup ludicrously easy to create.

The BBC astronomy show, Stargazing Live, with Brian Cox and Dara Ó Briain, has returned today! by Bradburn777in space

[–]Booster21 0 points1 point ago

It's much more complicated than that. They are allowed to sell advertising around their program's (such as they do on BBC America and cable channels like Dave in the UK). The problem is that there are a lot of caveats and hoops they must jump through in order to do it.

Also, because they are a not for profit organisation they don't have the motivation of maximising profit from their investments in programming. You might think its a weak argument (so do I as it happens) but it is a big factor.

Does any here do automated functional testing? If so, what tools do you use? by didyousaymeowin webdev

[–]Booster21 0 points1 point ago

You can yes (Jenkins even has a Selenium:GRID plugin). The reasons most people don't use a GUI based app for automated browser testing like this is simple: speed and bloat.

Most CI servers that I've come across don't support the libraries for running GUI based apps like Firefox, and having to install and maintain them is going to add a lot of cruft and bloat to server that's designed to integrate apps quickly. Also, firing up a GUI browser and running test via Selenium is SLOW, and if you have several 100 tests for a large app to run during deployment it can take up a lot of time. Being able to do that a LOT faster via a command line (and headless) webkit browser is a real advantage.

It also means your tests can run automatically when using a CI server, like Jenkins, during deployment.

How to Crack open an ATM in less than one minute by avonlakeguyin videos

[–]Booster21 1 point2 points ago

You have to consider the fact that if you're a reasonable size bank and have 500 branches, each with about at least 20 cameras in, that's at least 10,000 cameras. If each one of those is running 24 hours a day, that's a LOT of footage you're storing somewhere. Not to mention the redundant backups of the redundant backups.

Then you have to employ all the people to fit them and maintain them and all of those associated costs.

It quickly runs into the $1,000,000's for large organisations like banks. That's not to say they DON'T update, they do, but it takes a LONG time and it costs a LOT of money. If it costs the company $3,000,000 to update, but only $2,000,000 in lost machines and insurance costs, which one do you think they're going to pick?

Not to mention the hideous fucking bureaucracy that happens in those large organisations, where it can takes years just to get APPROVAL for something like that. By the time they've tendered contracts and agreed and negotiated and renegotiated the equipment is 3 years out of date before it's even installed.

I suspect you may be able to answer a more general comics question I've been saving up for a while. As someone who is associated with Image and who is a writer and member of the industry: how do you, and other people you know of in the industry, feel about Rob Liefeld?

Do you feel harsh criticisms of his work are valid? How is he seen at Image after the whole mess he had there?

I realise you may not want to answer this for whatever reason, if so please just ignore the question. I'll understand!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim gone Gold! by adamsoloin gamernews

I beleive "going gold" in this context refers to having final, tested and deployed releases for all planned platforms, languages and release countries.

Games such as this are rolled out in an interative way; the final release in the US for the XBOX may well come out a month before the Russian PC version due to the time it takes to translate all the dialogue and UI elements, for instance.

Javascript Unit Testing Framework by DarkZlayerin javascript

I've used JsUnit quite a bit before, but more recently I've been using QUnit (which is used by the jQuery team) and Google JS Test.

I like the V8 based Google JS Test a lot actually, and intend to try and use it as much as possible. It's not suitable for everything however, as there is obviously no browser (and therefore no DOM), but it can handle DOM manpiulation testing.
