How to use a paper towel - In the spirit of conservation, Joe Smith shows us how to use a paper towel properly. by Aschebescherin howto

I thought this was amazing, but then I realized I generally don't use more than one towel anyway.

Checking a website is easier than filling out an online form and giving Netflix your credit card.

I've been investigating Yidio for this purpose. Also covers Amazon, Vudu, iTunes, etc.

Maybe you're trying to decide whether a subscription is worth it?

Computer Experts: What's a computer trick you think everyone should know? by jojojokin AskReddit

[–]JonathanHarford 1 point2 points ago

Not a trick, but wow I wish more people (at my office) knew it:

Put shortcuts to directories you use often on your desktop (or, if Win7, on a jump list)!

It bothers me to watch someone open "My Computer" to access a file on our fileserver that's ten directories deep.

Or just PrintScreen if you're on a full-sized keyboard. (Or am I misunderstanding?)

BONUS: Alt-PrintScreen to capture just the active window.

Oh, I've discovered pen lag is MUCH better with Sketch than it is with Sketchbook.

I really doubt that. How many stores have you had unpleasant experiences with that you've destroyed so far?

Oh, come on. I only just bought a second copy of Machinarium as part of the Botanicula Bundle!

If a law passed requiring an iq/lifeskills test in order to procreate would you vote for it? by MastodonMetalin AskReddit

No, I wasn't talking about laws, just the more general concept of eugenics.

A public schoolgirl who died from a brain hemorrhage at 13 has saved eight lives by donating her organs. by nomdewebin worldnews

It's not newsworthy, but it's a good story to pass around with the hopes of making people more likely to donate.

I'm thinking of congenital defects that would mean a likely brief life filled with physical pain. (Just googling a little, how about Edwards syndrome?)

I'd say that would cause a lot of suffering for both the child and the parents, wouldn't you? You don't think parents should screen for such an abnormality?

If a law passed requiring an iq/lifeskills test in order to procreate would you vote for it? by MastodonMetalin AskReddit

[–]JonathanHarford 0 points1 point ago

No, I'm not talking about forbidding people from reproducing. I'm talking about screening to help a person decide whether or not to bring a fetus to term. That's eugenics, too. I'd think that you'd be for that, but you specifically state that you think natural selection is good.

I think natural selection is a terrible way to select a population. It's very very slow, and it necessarily involves a lot of avoidable suffering.

So you're against, for instance, screening for hereditary disease? It would be better for such a person to be born and suffer (but maybe live long enough to pass on its genes)?

I'm finding the attitudes on display here pretty nauseating myself, but might I ask what you have against eugenics?
