Heh this is the mycology sub, I think "zip" might not connect with most of the people here. (it's an ounce)

Good looking flushes, is it ongoing, or did it flush twice and done? Also you may want to look into getting those a bit more dry. Using a food dehydrator like that can only get them as dry as the RH of the room it's in. Silica can get you down past 40 guaranteed.

Also, for the sake of the sub, 'strains' are mostly just marketing ploys from the people that sell spores. These are psilocybin cubensis, not too terribly much different than what you'd find in the wild, except that they're a lot healthier from the optimal condition they grew in.

At least split them down the middle, quarter them if you feel like it, you basically just need to expose as much inner flesh as possible. Put them under an air current for a while (fan, air purifier, whatever), then put them in very dry conditions. Either get the flake dessicant from the hardware store and put it all in a shoe box or something(making sure it has somewhere to melt in to so it doesn't mix with what you're drying, tastes terrible), or go to an art store and get silica beads if you want something you can reuse(again, no touching, but this time because if it's the rechargeable kind with the blue beads it's carcinogenic). I use silica packed into small fabric bags that I put in tupperware with the mushrooms. Just don't expose them to heat, like microwaving or heated food dehydrator.

You're done when they snap like a cracker when you try to bend them at all.

Super man does good, you did well.

Also, you need to harvest sooner. Almost all of those are way past when you should have cut them, even if you were taking spore prints. When spores get on to you substrate it stunts the growth so you get weaker and reduced number of flushes.

YSK about the ridiculous "brokerage fees" that UPS+FedEx charge for Canada-USA mailings. Stick to CanadaPost-USPS who charge no such fees. Link also includes information for Canadians on how to avoid the fees. by nitonin YouShouldKnow

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 13 points14 points ago

Hmm sounds about right.

What people don't seem to get is that UPS and FedEx don't really care about your dinky little package. They care about the 50,000$/month shipping contract with a company they take care of, the regularly scheduled daily shipments, the big stuff. That's their bread and butter, personal shipping is icing on the cake.

You want their international team to go through the hassle of filling out those forms, instead of just imaging and filing the forms like they do for their usual clients who have their respective shipping departments do that? You bet your ass they'll charge you a bit more.

Shipping is a huge, well organized endeavor, anything out of the ordinary can cause a delay, and delays at places like airplane ramps are measured in thousands of dollars in fines per minute.

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 0 points1 point ago

Oh ok so you were referring to the life cycle portion of some fungi.

That's actually really interesting, I was not aware people grew them on purpose for consumption. What I was referring to was a common technique used to contaminate rye as part of the synthesis of LSD.

I would venture to guess that it's not more popular because the strains that can form them are a bit more temperamental than a normal B+, especially for people who live further up north and have to worry about the kinds of temperature fluctuations that occur in the 3-4 months it takes to produce them.

Your jar doesn't look bad, though it doesn't necessarily look good either. I always try to inoculate in a predictable pattern (for me directly below the 4 holes in the jar lids) because the start of growth can look a lot like condensation like in your picture, but if it's right where you think it should be that's an extra vote of confidence.

Patience, patience, patience. Let it do it's thing, the only thing that will be done by looking at it all the time is making any growth you have think it breached the surface because of the light, and mixing up your verm layer with regular air. Verm can't support life by itself, but I've seen some particularly hardly black molds that managed to take hold in dry verm, so it's not impenetrable.

Is it possible to keep a mushroom terrarium? by Macraucheniain mycology

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 6 points7 points ago

Probably not.

The problem is that the part that you would want on display, the mushroom, isn't like a potted plant, it's like the flower of a tiger lily. It only comes around once in a while, and after it does what it was meant to do it dies and rots.

The real 'meat' of fungal growth is its mycellial mass, which most people would associate with a root ball. It grows out of sight, and when conditions are right the parts of it that can see sunlight sprout mushrooms to spread its spores.

That brings up another problem. Mushrooms are actually more closely related (in how they obtain energy) to animals than they are to plants. They need to 'eat' to stay alive, so having a terrarium with a light would do nothing for their energy requirements. You could theoretically provide them with what they need, like wood for wood loving fungi or grains, but it would not be anywhere near as easy as growing a plant.

What you have your eye on in particular actually forms a symbiotic relationship with the root systems of living trees, which means it would be damn near impossible to get any real growth of it in a terrarium. It also gets pretty ugly when it gets older.

You mean C. purpurea?

Sclerotia is the term used to describe a part of the life cycle of certain fungi, most notably C. purpurea by those synthesizing LSD.

I've never cultivated any myself, though I have read the procedure typically used.

If you're getting absolutely no growth from any of your inoculations I would assume something is wrong with your spores. It's always possible they cooked in the box somewhere while being shipped, maybe you didn't let your substrate cool enough after sterilizing so the spores cooked when you innoculated, or if your conditions aren't great where you have your jars. Really, though, anywhere that's dark, and between 60-80 should do the trick to at least get some growth.

Don't assume they're trash, either. Honestly for all that I know about growing mushrooms, the absolute best advice I can offer people is: patience. Let them alone for a solid week and see what they look like then.

So my jars have looked like this for about a month now. Should I just go ahead and birth them? by ScienceProject111in shroomers

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 1 point2 points ago

I've used both and really the only advantage I found with the shorter jars is that they're less prone to tipping. The taller ones tend to get a bit top heavy, especially with the leftover protective layer of verm destabilizing the base, and will tip. The more squat ones are more stable and won't tip even if you get a mushroom pushing from the side.

Compaction is the last of your worries. Hell there are still people out there tamping down their BRF/verm into the jars and it works just fine, people just tend to prefer faster colonization over longer flushes.

Sterilize the fork a bit. Although an established mycellial network does have a fairly good defense against contaminants, you are doing a bit of ripping and exposing that could hurt the cake. Typically deep scratching is only something done to casings that have been left to colonize too long, but I'd say scratch the parts you'd like to see fruit (sides an top) right after you take them out of the dunk. They'll be a bit softer then.

Light is definitely an issue, just as much as oxygen and water content. That's why mushroom growing plants don't have windows, to keep all the factors exactly as the grower wants them. As far as temperature goes, "optimum" temp is ~80 F, but the mycellium produce a bit of their own heat, so 65-70 is just fine.

Just keep them in the dark next time, and don't wait more than a week after they look fully colonized. Not that exactly 7 days after the last bit of uncolonized verm disappears is gospel or anything, just a general guide line. I've found everyone falls into their own set of habits when growing because every strain is different, and everyone is growing in their own unique environment.

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 2 points3 points ago

You would have noticed if you had a contamination problem. A smell, a color, fuzzy growth, something.

What likely happened to your grow is the you either waited too long to birth them and the mycellium hardened, or you didn't have the right fruiting conditions.

If you waited too long you could have done what's typically called a 'deep scratching' where you basically rough up the outer surface of the cake with a fork or knife. Being against glass for that long made the mycellium give up on growing there, so tearing it up a bit exposes fresh parts that still have the ability to fruit.

If you didn't have the right fruiting conditions, well that's just a case of having to tweek your chamber. More humidity, higher temp, or the complete opposite. As a general rule I never throw out cakes that are not contaminated.

I have grown in both kinds of half pint jars, full pint jars, old candle jars, and a variety of other containers just for the hell of it. The jar is very rarely the problem. These things survived off cow shit for thousands of years, they don't care what kind of jar you use.

So my jars have looked like this for about a month now. Should I just go ahead and birth them? by ScienceProject111in shroomers

[–]Lets_Do_This_ 4 points5 points ago

The problem is not the shape of the jar. A half a pint is a half a pint, it's the same volume and will take the same amount of time to colonize.

You could have had them in the wrong spot or checked them too often.

Light is a trigger for fruiting. When you keep them in a dark place you are simulating the mycelium being underground. When you take them into the light, you are simulating them breaching the soil that they were growing in, which triggers the growth of mushrooms. That's how the reproduce, if they started growing mushrooms when they were still underground they would release their spores into nothing. Keep them in a dark place, and be patient. Resist the urge to check them constantly.

Calling major bullshit on the hepa stance.

Not only do most people use hepa filter so wrong that they end up making the air quality worse because they're creating turbulence that will stir up contams, but with a little common sense and patience you can do just as well without than you can using one properly.
