What is one statement that you stand by but might get unpleasant reaction from others? by no_front_teethin AskReddit

[–]LimeJuice 0 points1 point ago

I don't watch TV. I forget what I'm watching around the time the first commercial break hits.

The only thing I can really do for extended periods of time is Starcraft. It's competitive and fast paced, so I'm constantly engaged. I also like to play guitar and write music, but I don't tend to stay on task long enough to finish a song unless I've got a whole day to write something.

Do you value the rights of the collective over the rights of the individual?

Why do they have to be opposed? Being a socialist doesn't mean I want to ban anything. It means I want to re-appropriate wealth to be equal(ish). I want everybody to have an equal shot at becoming whatever they want. Every single human being deserves food, clothing, a home, dignity, the chance to work, and the chance to education. Capitalism routinely fails to deliver on all counts.

Do you want a lifelong nanny-relationship with the state?

If someone is incapable of providing for themselves, then yes. You don't have to be dependant on the state. You can work and earn your money and live your life if you want. But everybody deserves equal shots at everything. It's that simple.

Do you think the majority is always right just because it is the majority?

I never implied that at all. Don't try to make me look like an idiot, I don't tend to deal in absolutes. I subscribe to two trains of thought for politics: democratic socialism (a more realistic solution) and libertarian socialism (a more ideal solution). In the case of democratic socialism, you'd protect rights in the same way as you do in a capitalist democracy; with a constitution. In libertarian socialism (anarchism), nobody has the right to oppress anybody.

And yes. You've stolen the word libertarian. Historically, it's referred to anarchists. You've stolen our word.

And yes, you are pretending to have a monopoly on liberty, by painting all socialists as autocrats.

Like a gay person who is Christian. What if they want to be married?

I'm not convinced men have it any easier than women. For all the suffering women face, they have just as much privilege. And for every privilege a man has, there's an opposing element of suffering.

White people? Sure, there's almost nothing that sucks about being white. The only possible downside is extremist minorities hating on you. And I suppose I'd have enjoyed a few scholarships on the basis of my race.

Straight people? Why would anybody choose to be gay? Being straight rocks, I won't lie. The only possible benefit of being gay is the intrinsic benefit that you might identify with or understand your partner a little more, which is hardly substantial in the face of the discrimination they face.

But men? No. Sure, men have really great in a lot of places in life. But most examples of "privilege" aren't men being elevated to some god-like status, but women suffering. Is the fact that men are rarely objectified in media really a privilege? Is the fact that men rarely get raped outside of prison really a privilege? Shouldn't that be how things are for everybody?

And even facing those elements of suffering, women have it phenomenal in western culture. They're generally assumed to be the superior gender (more logical, more intelligent than their oafish, violent counterparts). They're given much lighter sentences than men for the same crimes. They're afforded every courtesy (to the point where if a woman assaults her husband, he's the one who is arrested). How you could say women don't have a privilege is astounding.

That's my views on the subject.

I literally have an attention span of about 5 minutes, when I'm dedicating my entire being to concentrating. I can walk into a lecture, fully interested in what's going to be discussed, with 10 pencils sharpened and a brand new notebook. I'll sit down, right "Lesson 12: Fundamental Theorem of Calculus," the first 10 words of the notes, and then that's it. I'm not particularily hyperactive. A little, sure, but nothing insane. I'm an otherwise normal 18 year old student who's perfectly mature and intelligent. But I can't concentrate to save my life (see: grades).

It's a real thing.

They're still human beings, and they don't deserve to die, especially like that, because of a stupid decision. That's incredibly callous of you.

Socialist here:

That's not at all what I believe. I believe that all drugs should be legal. So do most of my socialist friends. Don't pretend you have a monopoly on liberty.

PS: stop stealing names for ideologies from the anarchists.

That's not what the guys aid. He said to just give them civil unions with the same rights and privileges. He never commented on the fact that it is illegal for two men who love each other to be married in most states. Yes, we should remove the government from marriage and just call the civil side of marriage a civil union, but even if we did that, gay people still couldn't get married.

You know that there are churches that support gay marriage, right? And that doesn't change the fact that there are laws against gay people getting married. If an individual church, pastor, or priest doesn't want to wed two gay folks, let them have their petty victory, but you're missing the crux of the issue. It's not that they can't be together, it's that they can't be "married". To a gay religious person, that's a big deal.

Here's what you do:

Next time they need help, say "no."

I used to be in a situation like you. When I was 8, I got a virus on my dad's computer. To this day, he think's I'm bad with computers, even though I build my own as a hobby and fix them for a living. Recently, his laptop went on him, and he blamed it on me for using the internet like three times to troubleshoot an issue with my computer. Of course, when he inevitably had issues with his new computer (which I actively avoided so much as touching), he asked me to fix it. I told him, "You seem to have this idea that computers are mystical beings with fickle behaviour, when in actuality they do everything for a very precise and logical reason. Every time I touch your computer, you blame me for everything that happens to it after that. So no, I won't touch it. Go pay Staples some absurd amount to fix it, and yell at them."

He caved, and hasn't blamed any technological breakdowns on me since.

Are you serious? This "separate but equal" bullshit is just as bad as active discrimination. Plus, what about religious gay people?

How is that relevant? Being sued for $10 million dollars ruins your entire life. A rapist who goes to jail and serves his time is then free to go.
