How did intercontinental trade work in the 1400s and 1500s? by chimpanzeein AskHistorians

[–]MYGODWHATHAVEIDONE 1 point2 points ago

If you want more books in that vein, also check out:

  • Fernand Braudel The Perspective of the World
  • Giovanni Arrighi The Long Twentieth Century
  • Immanuel Wallerstein The Modern World-System, vol. I: Capitalist Agriculture and the Origins of the European World-Economy in the Sixteenth Century

Again, with the exception of Braudel, these authors don't do straight history. They're concerned with (at least in part) justifying their ontological commitment to "capitalism" (although you'll notice that each one has a significantly different definition of capitalism), and to making their Marxian normative case against the "capitalist world system." (This is actually something the Frank critiques in the beginning of ReOrient.)

I know of two good books on this, but neither quite on the period you specify. The first is Before European Hegemony by Janet Abu-Lughod, but that deals with the 1200-1300s. The second is Andre Gunder Frank's ReOrient which is on the 1500s-1800s.

Your question is a much more micro-scale question than these authors though. These two are "World System Theorists" which is a branch of Marxian historiography aimed at investigating the rise of the "capitalist world system." So you'll have to wade through some quasi-Leninist theory to get to the interesting historical detail.

r/eagles, whats your ABSOLUTE favorite part about going to an Eagles game? You get one choice. by yaniwilksin eagles

[–]MYGODWHATHAVEIDONE 2 points3 points ago

Well, my experience is atypical. I've only ever been to one Eagles game, and it was here in Baltimore (at the old stadium). I saw the Eagles–Ravens game in 1997 that ended in a 10–10 tie. I went with my church's youth minister, who had the extra ticket and knew I had moved to the area from Philly.

So, obviously there was no trash talking going on and I was surrounded by Ravens fans. Eagles didn't win, so there was no basking in victory, and the crowd cheered for everything the Ravens did.

I guess the one thing that was totally awesome about that experience was seeing both Brian Dawkins and Ray Lewis early on.

The valedictorian is the member of the graduating class with the highest grades. They are usually given the honor of giving a speech at graduation.

These speeches are often terrible and full of idiotic clichés.

A transcript is the official grade report given by your school/university upon request. You usually send your high school transcript to universities as part of your application.

A 2.0 grade point average would mean that you received a 'C' on all your courses. (A 4.0 would be an 'A', a 3.0 would be a 'B', a 1.0 a 'D', and a 0.0 an 'F'. Some schools give you a higher score for grades received in Advanced Placement or Honors courses, allowing a student to receive a score higher than 4.0.) All of a student's course grades are converted from letter grades into this numerical scale and averaged in order to arrive at their Grade Point Average (GPA).

  • 6'1"
  • 185 lbs.
  • Hard to tell. I used to have the problem of pitching forward a little too much, shifting the weight onto my quads and then doing a good morning. but I've been working with a box to strengthen my posterior chain and trying to keep my chest proud throughout. Instead of pitching forward when I hit the sticking point I just pause in the middle of the lift now. I would really need to post a form check video to be able to tell what exactly is going on.
  • I've never done front squats, only low bar back squats and box squats.
  • My best deadlift was 1x5x290 while my squat was 3x5x225.
  • Actually, my lower back seems fine to me. It's my abs that I think are disproportionately weak. I may look into the anterior pelvic tilt routines posted here to see about altering that imbalance. My problem is that I have a bum left hip flexor that prevents me from doing any concentric ab exercises (e.g. sit-ups or hanging leg raises).

The Government We Deserve: Americans are sick and tired of Washington's dysfunctional politics. But it's not Congress they should be angry at -- Americans got exactly the system of government they asked for. by davidreiss666in StateOfTheUnion

[–]MYGODWHATHAVEIDONE 7 points8 points ago

This is a pretty weak screed against "neoliberalism." The author shows a graph displaying a collapsing public satisfaction with the direction of the country. Then, as a complete non sequitur, says that this dissatisfaction is a result of having pared back government influence on the public's daily lives. There's no evidence presented that the public as a whole is upset about "neoliberal" reforms. Maybe they are, but the author certainly doesn't make that case.

The only case the author makes is that the public is currently ambivalent about the role of government:

  • "Popular attitudes about the handling of the crisis also reflected a deep ambivalence about the role of government in economic life."
  • "The confusion that characterized economic policy generally was also evident on specific issues such as health care."
  • "Americans' ambivalence about the role of government also infects foreign policy."

The actual explanation for the trends on the graph the author presents right at the beginning:

Earlier periods of intense dissatisfaction, such as the early 1980s and early 1990s, were closely tied to sharp economic downturns. But the recent decline was already in full swing when Americans seemed to be living large, well before the 2008 Great Recession.

This shouldn't be much of surprise, since the current decade-long decline is easily explained in economic terms. The dotcom bubble popped in 2000–2001 and the U.S. has been in a bear market since. 9/11, the collapse of the dollar's strength because of the Iraq War and the loose money policy of the Fed, culminating in the current global financial crisis has added up to a decade of terrible economic performance.

Maybe "neoliberalism" is at fault, but the author states plainly that neoliberal reforms have been dominant over the past 30 years of federal government policy. But a constant can't explain a variable: if neoliberalism has been constant throughout this period, how does that explain the high variance in public satisfaction (and high variance in economic performance) over that same period?

The author presents no evidence or argument linking his distaste for "neoliberalism" and the observed swings in public satisfaction with the direction of the country which he's ostensibly explaining.

Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to do a hundred pushups, but take it from this old gym rat, I've spent my entire adult life in the gym, and a program like this one can do more harm than good.

If you only train one part of your body (and that's all a single exercise like pushups is going to do for you), you're setting yourself up for injuries down the road. I've seen it a hundred times.

It's like putting a powerful engine in a stock Toyota Tercel. What will you accomplish? You'll blow out the drive train, the clutch, the transmission, etc., because those factory parts aren't designed to handle the power of an engine much more powerful than the factory installed engine.

Push-ups basically only train the chest muscles and to some extent, the triceps. What you really want to do is train your entire body, all the major muscle groups (chest, back, abdomen, legs, shoulders and arms) at the same time, over the course of a workout. And don't forget your cardiovascular work!

I'm proud of you guys wanting to do this. Three cheers! Falling in love with exercise, eating right, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it a year or two and experience the amazing progress you'll make.

But do it right, okay?

My advice, find a good gym, with qualified trainers who will design your programs for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest for physical fitness. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, three days a week, is all you'll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).

And don't worry about being embarrassed or not being in shape the first time you walk into the gym. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.

Now get out there and do it! :-)

Akeem Jordan makes FBOs list of 2011 Special Teams tackles by slap_betin eagles

[–]MYGODWHATHAVEIDONE 0 points1 point ago

Well, that may help Akeem make the team, given all the competition at the LB position this offseason.

Kinda surprised that our special teams ace Colt Anderson didn't make the list. Maybe his injury-shortened season had something to do with it.
