TROPHY CASE

Germany isolated as Latin Bloc calls the shots: The eurozone's 'Latin Bloc' is in full revolt. The trio of French, Italian, and Spanish leaders - backed by world powers - are to push for a radical shift in Europe's economic strategy at crucial summit on Wednesday by maxwellhillin europe

We had our own currency. Sweden did a massive devaluation. Impossible in the Euro. And of course, austerity lead to consistently high unemployment in Sweden to this day. Austerity with a floating currency is just so much easier.

That's because we kinda need kids. Kids are a horrible burden financially to parents while being a great investment for society. So I'm not quite sure why you are bitching about a few months of paid leave?

People complain about student loans, yes, but that's only if you don't have a college fund. Some parents start saving money when the child is born, in a college fund. That's just exact like taxes, you put some money in the fund every month. But the difference is that you have a choice whether to do that or not.

Wow. I get to choose if my parents have money to pay for my college education?

It's just more effective from an economic standpoint. A 100% tax on food would be brilliant, technically...

Soon my friend. The invasion of Norway wont pay for itself. Or well, it will. But first we have to pay with our taxes. Then we will live like kings!

Ja och det är ju religionsfriheten tänkt att vara. Finns en del grejor man kunde göra I sverige dock för att styra upp det ordentligt. Som att ta bort kristendomskravet från successionsordningen och liknande.

Somalia is also a corrupt state. How is that relevant?

Spain, Italy and Portugal seems to be doing much better anyway.

GDP growth 2011:

Portugal -1.6%

Italy: +0.4%

Spain: +0.7

Greece: -6.9%

Ok, Siemens and pharmaceutical companies are the cause of corruption in Greek society. Gotcha.

Didn't know that Siemens is bribing doctors and local officials in Greece. And making people avoid paying taxes. Why are they doing that?

I think it's perfectly fine to blame the corrupt and dysfunctional Greek state. That doesn't mean blaming every individual Greek.

I don't think there's a single person that wouldn't want to wind back the clock to 2010 and deal with this mess in a completely different way.

I think most of Europe would honestly benefit from a slight loosening of both fiscal and monetary policy.

That's probably true. But it wont guarantee any austerity measures being implemented. A new deal for slightly less severe austerity measures and inflation guarantee from the ECB? Could work but it's a slippery slope indeed.

Yes, but there is no legal way to force them out of the eurozone either, if they insist on staying.

How long can the ECB continue with the ELM? They can't legally do it if the banks are insolvent which they will be eventually if these withdrawals continue.

Greece should just leave the euro. If we buy up the debt of Greece then the next step is to buy Portuguese and Spanish debt and so forth.

It's obviously politically impossible to force Greece to do necessary reforms (understandable due to the consequences). The election has clearly shown this. But, if they want to stay in the Euro they have to do these reforms! They are a bloated and corrupt society. There's no escape from that.

There is no way besides military occupation to force these cuts. Sure the ECB could loosen up its policy and go on a helicopter drop to inflate all of Europe, but then you have to take into account all the voters outside of Greece. How popular will these measures be in countries were there actually was some kind of budget discipline? It's not just about what the Greek people think.

FTA:

"Either Europe has a committed, stable, successful eurozone with an effective firewall, well capitalised and regulated banks, a system of fiscal burden sharing, and supportive monetary policy across the eurozone, or we are in uncharted territory which carries huge risks for everybody.

I'd like to see that sold to the constituents of the Euro area.

Greece faces new election that could seal euro exit by JB_UKin europe

[–]MalcolmTucker 6 points7 points ago

Eh, if you decide to drop out you freeze deposits while switching to the Drachma. Of course, those hurt most will be the naive middle- and lower-class who haven't moved their money already.

The benefit of dropping the euro is that competitiveness will probably be restored much quicker. Food and such necessities can of course be guaranteed by the EU for cents to the Euro compared to what these bailouts have cost so far. Of course both ways means austerity in practice. But right now it's just austerity with no way to regain competitiveness before it's too late and neonazis or communists are in power.

Not doing going the austerity route and keeping the Euro is a pipe-dream though. I think people fail to grasp just how deep in shit Greece is. Italy seems to be doing ok, Portugal had bleak but not to horrible GDP growth at -0.1%.

Greece is projected to show -7.5% GDP growth. No austerity in the world can keep up which such horrible development. Maybe there's a bottom somewhere around the living standards of Northern Africa.
