Statistically the south is a shithole, its not just an opinion. If you look at things like obesity, heart disease, illiteracy and teen pregnancy, southern states dominate the chart. Aside from that, southern states, though typically Republican, tend to suck down the most federal tax dollars.

Opinion time-Texas has plenty of parts that I consider shitty redneck south. But it also has areas that are beautiful and educated and free from the blight of redneckism. Florida as well has its shitty parts, particularly the panhandle. But central and south florida are great. I have lived in several southern states briefly, and despised most them. There is nothing quite like the intolerance and bigotry and just plain dumbfuckism of the south. In particular, it tends to come wrapped in a flag, with the self righteousness and hypocrisy that only a good southern evangelical can muster.

Your probably from a cool part of Texas, and you sound educated. I would drink a beer with you. No problem.

I feel you. I am still have no solid explanation for invading iraq and charging a trillion the the countries credit card. We didn;t even get the oil, the wells were auctioned off and the chinese french and russians got most of them.

I will say a drastic force reduction is in progress across all branches, to attempt to rein in the spending. Surface guys are getting force retired or not allowed to re-enlist all the time. Navy manning going from 330k to 250k by 2015. We aren't really feeling it on subs, we are undermanned to begin with. We have a terribly high attrition rate.

The thing about our tech is that we use it for actual useful things, drug interdiction and anti-terrorism are big right now. We have tracked merchant ships headed to the US with very bad things on them, and we have stolen some very important cell phone calls from bad people. We are adapting very well from the dumb cold war/big war type stuff.

If I ever meet you in person and we have a beer together I can tell you some shit that will blow your mind. The things you can mount a submarine mast these days, and the data you can just pull out of the air. There is cool stuff happening out there.

Your just another whiny internet crybaby. You think typing on reddit and complaining about whales is saving the world. Meanwhile I have had to have needles shoved in my ass to prevent me from catching some godawful disease because I spent weeks in a rainforest helping people living in squalor dig a well for drinking water. I have had heat stroke from trying to build a fucking shed over a well in Africa, while you sit in your ac and judge people from a laptop.

I sleep at night because in my lifetime I have seen the results of work that my hands have done to better other peoples lives. I have seen a kid drink fresh water for the first time in his entire life, because of work that I did. Keep being an internet savior, and judging people like me. Meanwhile, we will be out actually accomplishing something.

You could only hope to accomplish in your life what I have done. Internet hero boy.

The one that I heard about was a Ming, several years ago. Its a chinese reverse engineered copy of an old Soviet Romeo class diesel boat. I suppose its possible. People must have been sleeping though because those boats are noisy pieces of shit. I cannot fathom a reason why their SSN escort didn't detect them. Unless they didn't have one.

I have to be vague but let me assure that we carry a significant advantage against a majority of the chinese fleet. A good diesel boat actively running on battery is the only thing to give us trouble. Gotta wait for those dudes to snorkel and catch them with non acoustic means.

We have posted in our shack a set of lawful orders directing us to not use medium freq active in vicinity of major coastal operating areas in the PNW. I cannot say where it restricts us, but it does. And in a fuckton of waterspace. Despite what you crybabies think about the big bad boogeyman Navy, we are taking steps to prevent damage to the environment due to high SPL sonar. It is easier for an admiral to throw down a blanket order restricting its use than to listen to people bitch and moan and file lawsuits. I am telling you as an operator and supervisor on a deckplate level, that the sub fleet in my area has been restricted in use of active. Whether you believe me or not is irrelevant, because I sleep like a baby.

You should be ashamed of yourself for caring about animals more than people. I spent 2 weeks in the rain with a dirty ass giving food to homeless Japanese people after their earthquake, and helping them dig their belongings out of the rubble. I have built wells in jungle villages, built houses and schools for kids in Nicaragua, and a bunch of other shit that actually helps real people, all in the name of the US Navy.

Meanwhile you spend your time worrying about stuff like this. I do not know how you sleep at night.

I kind of agree. It is interesting to read the articles that trickle down from big navy on how to counter new stuff. A big threat now is hundreds of small boats swarming a battle group in a strategic strait, maybe like in the persian gulf. Admirals are sweating because our weapons systems just cannot repel 200 small boats with suicide bombers on them. Subs are on the bleeding edge of so many cool missions, I wish I could tell you just how much shit the new electronics and mission configurable gear on a sub could do. Lets say hypothetically, if you wanted to steal someones cell phone calls, and all radio traffic, and any and all wifi data being transmitted, and the people you wanted to steal it from lived near ocean. Wouldnt a submarine be a good way to do it? We do have translators on board, pick a language. And the SSGN boys carry two full seal teams, all their gear, and the mini subs to deploy them. And they are deployed right now. Some consider submarines obsolete, a cold war relic. If only the public knew..

I have been told two things about teeth in Britain. I dated a wonderful girl named Chloe from there, and she had healthy clean teeth, but she had needed braces and never got them. Her teeth were crooked as fuck. She said teeth over there are terrible. Then I got into a discussion at a bar with a british dude, who insisted thats just an urban legend, that teeth in england are just as good as the ones here. Care to comment?

I am a sonar tech stationed on a submarine in the pacific northwest. The sea life issue is a known one and we have mitigation factors in place. This video must be several years old. There are a shitload of restrictions on the use of medium freq mainframe sonar, which is what you are hearing coming from the Shoup. Of course if there happens to be a pod of whales out in the middle of the ocean, and someone goes active with high SPL MF, thats another issue. But we have adopted measures to protect wildlife near the coast and intercoastal.

Edit-I don't know where you got your info that the Navy is increasing testing, but the fact is we are increasing restrictions on the use of active transmissions, not increasing the testing.

Ahhh. we do the same thing. after every watch, 30 minutes of cleanup, everyone has a spot they are supposed to do. Because, of dust. Although our COB doesn't call it dust, he calls them ghost turds. And he is absolutely fanatical about finding them. I swear he gets turned on by finding dust bunnies or lint in the weirdest places with his flashlight, then he picks it up and runs around showing people. The things we do.

That shit from boot camp? That is real? Does this mean someone just gets up from their watch and goes and starts sweeping? I had no idea that was a real thing. I thought it was just a boot camp thing.

Ahh I see. That is totally how I view active sonar being transmitted from surface ships. We detect that shit sooooo far away, its like a spotlight beam in the middle of a football field at night. It instantly gives us an exact bearing, and with the right conditions/environment, ranging information as well. Does require direct path and bottom bounce arrival, which typically is found in deeper water. Its actually a really basic formula, but when done right the range is money.

Yea i lucked out. My math grades and drug waivers cock blocked the nuke recruiters. They took a look because of my asvab then booked it once they saw all the baggage I had. Dodged a bullet on that one. Fuck did I ever.

We use towed arrays as well, although I think the Surtass and Tactas or whatever you guys use is way longer than ours. We have a fatty and a thinny, the thinny is way better but is a bitch to pull in and out, so 90% of the time the fatty is out.

Can I ask what a sweeper is? Never heard that term.

[–]PokeChopSandwiches 8 points9 points ago

Yes. We would wipe the floor with them. Counter-detection ranges combined with torpedo effectiveness statistics give subs an overwhelming advantage. Plus from real world experience I know how terrible surface ships are at finding us. And this is good US ships with good equipment. Forget about the less advanced countries. It would be slaughter. We would run out of torpedoes.

Our detection range of surface warships is typically double to triple what they see us at. If they see us ever.

how in the hell are you supposed to track a diesel boat on the battery? removing active tracking from a scenario like this is like telling a marathon runner to hold his breath for every other lap. Its a completely nonsensical rule.

STS2 here, MPRA assistance plus longer track time would have helped. Gotta catch these dudes when they are up. Acoustic tracking of a good boat like that on the battery is a crapshoot. Sneaking past the surface ships though, easy day. It is astounding how close I have gotten to well equipped Burkes and they never knew.

Submarine sonar tech here, we use Bose noise cancelling. But like below, most of our shit is visual now. Most of the sensors have audio, but there is only a select few we actively actually listen too. Alot of times we are looking for stuff that is low frequency, so audio is crap anyway.

I am not a soldier. And I pay taxes. Also I have a real job. I provide the US Navy with a service, and they pay me for it. I actually provide a highly specialized technical service, which warrants significant re-enlistment bonuses to prevent me from taking my skillset to the private sector where I would be probably paid significantly more. If you think I am lying I invite you to research the retention bonus currently being awarded to Submarine Sonar Technicians. Or don't. I will milk this job for 20 years, earn a pension, then go straight to Lockheed Martin doing the same shit for double the money. Meanwhile my health care is free and the Navy paid off my bachelors degree. When I get out, I have also earned the Post 9-11 GI Bill, meaning my masters degree will be paid for, and a cost of living stipend for 3 years.

I suppose your idea of a "real job" is pushing paper in an office building with a break room. Or some other similarly terrible idea of what a real American does. Maybe a farmer? Is that a real job? How about a shoe salesman? Lolz. And I have never gotten to kill a brown person. We are too busy spying on the yellow people and stealing cell phone traffic from the Iranians.

If your going to put something in italics to emphasize it, you should probably make sure your putting the entire point or sentence in. I clearly wasn't implying that every able bodied person in America should join the military. Even a lowly burger flipper knows to read and understand an argument before attempting to refute it.

On the other side of the coin, as a straight white guy, why should I bear some responsibility for the example girl you used. Ultimately, the taxpayers will handle a majority of the financial burden for this mother, and then the child. I wore condoms as a teenager. Its called personal responsibility. If these girls make poor choices fine, its a free country. But why punish the responsible, contributing members of society?

Whenever I see a young person in good health complaining about poverty, I scoff. There is a stable well paying job available 24/7 for these types of people. Its called the Army. You get an education, a career, and they tell you how to do everything. If a young person who is physically able to serve is in poverty, its because their fucking lazy and don't want to sacrifice to change their life around.

I understand that some people are born and have an uphill battle. But fuck, why punish everyone else because poor people are stupid? I spend an average of 6 months out of the year underwater in a steel fucking tube to make a living. I don't owe those type of people, white, black, hispanic, a fucking cent. They should donate to me.

Rant over. Rant not aimed at you. Just lazy people in "poverty." Poverty is fucking Mogadishu. The american version of poverty is my tax money paying for section 8 housing, food, and enough money left over to buy weed.
