After President Obama’s announcement, opposition to gay marriage hits record low by hecruz24in lgbt

[–]RS14-2 0 points1 point ago

What here makes you think there is a causative relationship between Obama's statement and the poll results?

Opposition to gay marriage has been dropping for ages, and the change relative to two months ago is only 4 percentage points[1], with error bars of 3.5 percentage points on those measurements. We can't even confidently say that opposition to gay marriage has decreased at all between these samples!

Attributing the change to Obama is purely speculative.

I'm sorry, but the Taurus Judge is junk. People hear "shotgun" and erroneously think it's powerful.

The judge fires .410 shotshells out of a 3'' barrel. From this you get three nonexpanding 000 buck (9.1mm, ~60 gr) pellets at distressingly low muzzle velocity (780fps[1]).

Compare with a decent 9x19 hollowpoint, which will achieve 1200fps+, expand on impact, and masses nearer to 115gr. Even a Glock 17, the fullsize model, is comparable in size to the judge, being lighter, thinner, and shorter, while having triple the capacity.

I think you're confusing the different variants of multirole aircraft. The Bf 110 was certainly fitted with radar in some versions, but not until 1942, and they certainly weren't sending out radar equipped Bf 110s over England during the Battle of Britain.

The Wurzburg radar was at least deployed prior to the Battle of Britain, but only barely, and I'm skeptical of British knowledge of it at this point without more detailed information of when it was observed and analyzed.

Lead Ammo Protection Passes U.S. House with Strong Bipartisan Support by gunhaver89in guns

[–]RS14-2 0 points1 point ago

the EPA was considering using their regulatory power to make lead ammo illegal.

No they weren't. The EPA has categorically stated that they do not have the authority to do so.

http://www.epa.gov/oppt/chemtest/pubs/Owens_Petition_Response.pdf

http://www.epa.gov/oppt/chemtest/pubs/response_4.9.12.pdf

Specifically, I emphasize that

After careful review, EPA has determined that TSCA does not provide the Agency with authority to address lead shot and bullets as requested in your petition, due to the exclusion found in TSCA 3(2)(B)(v). Consequently, we are denying that portion of your petition.

TSCA 3(2)(B)(v) exempts

any article the sale of which is subject to the tax imposed by section 4181 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 [26 U.S.C. 4181] (determined without regard to any exemptions from such tax provided by section 4182 or 4221 or any other provision of such Code) [1]

Cryptic? 26 U.S.C. 4181 applies a tax to

Pistols. Revolvers. Firearms (other than pistols and revolvers). Shells, and cartridges. [2]

The EPA doesn't have that power, and they know it.

Emphasis mine.

Both comments are essentially substance free. A thread containing only "I like this" and "I don't like this" would be totally uninteresting to read.

Two concentration camp inmates about to kill a fallen SS guard. The figures in the background are row of German soldiers that were gunned down. by HustlerThugin pics

[–]RS14-2 0 points1 point ago

Col. Buechner wrote that there were only 19 Americans among the 27 or 28 witnesses to the Dachau massacre, and only three of them were positively known to still be alive when he wrote his tell-all book in 1986. One of them was Private First Class John Degro, whom Buechner credits with being the first man to enter the Dachau concentration camp. Those present when the 346 Waffen-SS soldiers were executed, on Lt. Bushyhead's orders, included 3 American officers, 3 non-commissioned medical officers under Col. Buechner's command, Col. Buechner's driver, 3 or 4 German medics from the nearby hospital, around 4 inmates, and 12 Infantrymen under the command of 1st Lt. Jack Bushyhead.

I believe your saiga drum may be ok since it is not an intermediate cartridge.

Wrong.

The Saiga is prohibited:

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:

(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.

The magazine is also banned; can't find the code at the moment.

Identification is actually substantially less trivial than you may think. The Tettigoniidae (katydids) are actually classified as crickets, and named as such in British English. Take a look, for instance, at the shieldbacked katydids (Tettigoniidae Tettigoniinae).

I'm going to guess that it's a grasshopper based on the absence of ears on the forelegs at t=1m30s, but you shouldn't believe that they can be distinguished at a glance.

Oh, hey, I already saw this. I'm going to repost what I said then.

This petition is moronic.

It's addressed to the "supreme court" (which one?), which doesn't arbitrarily decide to rule on laws, but only when presented with an actual case (of which there are currently none). You might as well petition your dog -- it has no relevance to the actual authority or procedure of the courts.

Additionally, this particular petition happens to be roughly 60% inane ("Because civil unions between one man and one woman will benefit NC", "sense of community that was created in overturning those unfair laws was profound", "Because if twitter can start a revolution in Egypt, there is no reason we cannot spark a revolution HERE and NOW.")

Even if there were a case before them, do you think the justices wouldn't be exposed to the arguments in the petition letter? The only possible way I could imagine the "arguments" here having the slightest relevance is if the petitioner forgot to argue anything at all.

Even compared to the habitually low bar set by Change.org petitions, this is confused, inane, and poorly conceived.

(And as doomheit points out, petitioning the White House is equally silly.)

The problem is that they used a single global salt. An attacker can compute

hash('password'+salt)

and from this immediately find everyone who uses this password. The salt really only prevents them from using a preexisting rainbow table.

NetHack4 variant online... by deltopiain nethack

[–]RS14-2 1 point2 points ago

Jane Austen wrote six novels and started a seventh, Sanditon. In the nearly 200 years since she passed away, there have been a few sequels written, as well as pseudo-completions of Sanditon and various other pastiches and homages. None were with her permission. Not to single her out -- most of the authors of the classics receive similar treatment, not by people "stealing" their work, but usually by people worshipping it.

Funny that you should choose such an example--unauthorized sequels were precisely the example I immediately thought to cite as equally crass.

I also find such behavior rather presumptuous, given the other variants with equal claim to succession.

[–]RS14-2 6 points7 points ago

Yes. The initial shooting of Parker was justified, because he was a threat. He subsequently ceased to be a threat, as evidenced clearly by Ersland turning his back and walking past Parker to reload, and the subsequent shots were thus murder.

TIL a Bay Area student jumped off of the Golden Gate Bridge for "fun" and survived, without suffering any life threatening injuries. The average death rate for suicide jumpers is 98%. by death_and_repostsin todayilearned

[–]RS14-2 3 points4 points ago

The student did not jump from the center of the bridge which is 250-feet. He went over the edge from an area between Fort Point and the South tower, which is about 220-feet above the water. He had to climb over a four foot railing to get to the water's edge.

This is still 43 ft more than Olivier Favre record high dive.
