My guess is his definition is "something that inherits from Block", which all place-able items (besides vehicles) currently do.

Burning planet leaves dust in its wake: Astronomers have for the first time, found a rocky planet that's slowly being vapourised by the blistering heat of the star it's orbiting. by davidreiss666in science

No, that would violate thermodynamics. All orbits decay, the only difference is how fast they do it.

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom is demanding access to 135 computers and hard drives that were seized from his home in January, so the data can be used for his defense. Until then, he refuses to give up passwords to encrypted data stored on the machines. by DrJulianBashirin technology

Be aware that only encrypting your home drive makes your computer vulnerable to attacks that simply wait for you to decrypt the drive and then read it by installing something outside of ~.

Wow, the piston+sand thing is smart! I had done something similar when I helped a friend make a piston clock without sticky pistons but never thought to use it for upwards signals.

Visual C++ Compilers and C Runtime removed from Windows 8 SDK by pjmlpin programming

It's just GCC so I don't see why not, unless there's a windows specific issue.

I think there's enough L -> javscript cross-compilers at this point that it's not a huge barrier to entry anymore.

The nice thing about Linux is the variety. Try installing Gnome 3, KDE, XFCE, or another desktop environment. You aren't locked into any one.

You're going to have to write most of the browser in C(++) anyways to interact with libraries (e.g webkit), the OS, and interpret JS in the first place. At that point, how much is there left? Pretty much the JS standard library and the UI. You could make a case for doing the UI in javascript, I guess, but the vast majority of the browser needs to be native code since it's implementing what HTML+JS can't do, that's the point of writing the browser in the first place.

[–]Rotten194 0 points1 point ago

Or you could just write the whole browser in C(++) and not have to worry about it since it's by default faster than JS?

Stalin Scheme is very different than the virtual machines you get with a browser.

The compiler itself runs slowly

A JIT optimizer in a browser doesn't have this luxury. It's also not statically compiling the whole source file like Stalin does, it's dynamically translating little bits and pieces that it thinks it has enough time to. Top that off with using a real garbage collector, not Boehm, and you have a much slower language.

[–]Rotten194 -1 points0 points ago

Nothing magical, but quite a bit that makes it slower than other languages.

Xubuntu isn't the greatest example of XFCE sine they pull in some Gnome stuff as well. If even vanilla XFCE is too much LXDE is lighter, and a tiling WM is even lighter than that.
