NYPD officers caught on tape brutally beating 19y/o. Cops claimed teen had marijuana, a bag containing crack residue, and that he struck first. Now, surveillance video obtained by New York One shows confrontation was unprovoked - and the charges against the teen are false by maxwellhillin politics

I used that word, perhaps improperly, to describe the nature of a combat unit; or in this case, department within the police force. The dangers of these professions, in conjunction with a lot of administrative pressure to handle issues internally, combine to make actions in support of the interests of your fellow officers/soldiers seem more important than those of the "enemy." Even if doing so violates your personal ethical code or the rights of those outside the unit. It creates a sort of social "island" from which you can expect unwavering support no matter what, provided you reciprocate. It makes other relationships seem less "real" because they just don't understand what its like to be a part of something like this. At least that's how I would describe what happens throughout the military experience. And police departments are well stocked with veterans and reservists...

Congratulations! I am now 30 and just transferred to a 4 year university to do the same. Deciding to join the military and generally waste my time working entry level jobs for a few years has me trailing the pack. It's daunting to jump in so late, I feel out of place amongst the other students ten years my junior. You deserve to hold your head high as you have become an inspiration to non-traditional students everywhere.

I'm not sure it really matters whether these have or haven't been passed. the US government seems to be doing as it pleases regardless.

I served 4 years in the Army and was exposed to the insular, pack mentality environment for the first time. I completely understand how this sort of environment can go sour and the people involved being completely oblivious to how far they have shifted from reality. Certainly some of them just don't care how evil they have become, but I think that most have simply fallen prey to peer pressure and group ideals supplanting their individual concept. Manipulating the environment to counter this phenomenon would be met with resistance by the people affected, cost money by requiring oversight and restructuring expertise positions to be created, and its not in the interest of the authoritarian organizations that benefit from the convenient application of such unquestioning enforcement of orders by the police force.

Its all fun and games until someone reports you and the local PD pick you up. Some chief wanting to make a name for himself by extracting a confession from you is not outside the realm of possibility. I would honestly go talk to them personally and provide identification to avoid any possible situation like I just described.

Maybe friction hinges across the top? Then it can open vertically instead of laterally, thus removing the requirement for wheels or weight bearing side hinges.

Reddit, we need your help to test the effectiveness of Binaural beats! by crozerin self

[–]SSDeathstar 0 points1 point ago

Here's some interesting tips Ive come across, if your really trying to maximize the effects. Apparently there is an effective carrier frequency for certain base frequency ranges. Its called the [http://healingbeats.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4](Oster Curve) although Im not sure if strict adherence to the highly specific frequencies listed is necessary or if you can interpolate to fit your own. Second, you can actually load a song, create a number of data points equal to the duration in seconds multiplied by your desired "beat" and then use the select by interval (2) feature and set half of them to either alternate balance or total volume at the desired rate. Ill break it down since its kind of complex.

  1. create data points equal to song duration in seconds multiplied by desired base frequency.
  2. Select all data points and assign duration in seconds equal to the songs duration in seconds divided by total points.
  3. Choose the select by interval (2) and set this half to one extreme of balance or volume.
  4. Select "invert selected data points" which selects the other half for you.
  5. Set this half to the opposite extreme.

Personally, I think this and Isochronic tones are more powerful mechanisms. But the binaural beats supposedly balances activity between hemispheres and strengthens the corpus callosum (connections between the right and left hemispheres)

Good luck, and spread the word.

I am starting to get into entrainment myself. I downloaded gnaural and its interesting to play around with if your curious.

This seems to be a common problem, but I can't find any solutions, just people asking about it: Flash plays videos, no sound from them, sound works in Firefox and everywhere else. by whimsiesin chrome

Ive run across this myself. I probably have no idea what I am talking about but when I opened the plugin tab there were several versions of flash drivers running concurrently. Disabling the older versions seemed to work for me. Again, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

I meant no offense in my characterization of my girlfriend as a "very progressive catholic" Having been raised, schooled, and confirmed in the Catholic doctrine I am aware that your typical Catholic does not abide by or even necessarily believe in the majority of the churches tenants. The recent hot button issue of birth control makes "at least one" incarnation of this quite apparent. If even 80% of Catholic women use birth control, a conservative figure in the interest of maintaining focus on the broader implications, than they are guilty of a "grave sin" or even perhaps a mortal sin, depending on your interpretation. This is compelling as it demonstrates widespread departure from official church doctrine. For the sake of brevity I will simply suggest that other, similarly common departures exist, and are generally well tolerated. If you disagree I genuinely want you to correct me, or submit your own interpretation. No sarcasm or insult intended here :) That being said my statement about my girlfriends religious beliefs was hedged, in consideration of my audience. Here in r/atheism a certain bias against faith is reasonably expected. One would further assume such a biased individual would probably interpret "Catholic" as an individual who fully believes and practices the tenants of Catholicism. Since this is not strictly the case I thought I would clarify her actual position to avoid unwarranted, casual, and potentially negative characterization.

Moving on to your statement that I want my kids to make up their own mind as long as they make them up the way I want them to is somewhat unwarranted. I tried to clarify that I was concerned that they would fall into indoctrination as a result of a desire to please their parents. I think that tradition is not inherently desirable, but rather an unfortunate product of social convention. I cannot however deny I would see any rational choice to pursue religion over science as a negative one. I recognize that this leaves me as biased and perhaps flawed but I think this is an inevitable part of being human, as being possessed of an opinion. Would I disown or in any way "mistreat" my children in such a situation? No, I do not require such absolute obedience or conformity from anyone. I can accept opinions that differ from my own without rejecting or devaluing the individual. However, I would like to submit that anyone who identifies a definable, attainable, belief other than their own as superior is suggesting that they intentionally subscribe to a flawed or "sub-optimal" philosophy. This is fundamentally different than humility, which is accepting the possibility that ones beliefs are not ideal. A willingness to entertain alternatives, evolve ones personal beliefs in the presence of compelling evidence, tolerance, etc.... The former suggests deliberate rejection of an opinion that they agree is "better" implying willful intent to do harm, to sabotage their efforts at ideal action or purpose. How could I believe myself to be "good" and not hold the beliefs that I find to be the best system conceivable given my understanding of available evidence? Its late and maybe I am rambling, but such a concept seems foreign to me if not outright impossible.

My girlfriend is a very progressive Catholic, (believes in evolution, puts logic first) but during some of our more meaningful conversations, she asked if I would allow our (theoretical) children to make their own choice about faith and if I would support their decisions. I agreed that I would, but secretly I fear that they would simply follow her to church every Sunday because they want to "be like mommy." Not that I'm opposed to them modeling her, shes a wonderful example of how to be a decent human being, but I would prefer they arrive to such an opinion without favoritism as a factor. Anyway, on my way to class, not long ago, I came to the realization that kids like cool science experiments more than lengthy discussions about magical men in the sky. So, if I were going to force them to choose (between her beliefs and mine) that I should practice what I preach. Therefore, Sundays would always be "science day". I would avoid hypocrisy, lay the framework for a love of knowledge, teach them invaluable concepts, and learn a lot myself along the way. Glad to see that I am not the only dreamer.

Should ex-felons have the right to vote? by BagOnutsin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]SSDeathstar 1 point2 points ago

I think that felons should absolutely be allowed to vote. If criminality deprives an individual of their "right" to influence the government, than the government would be motivated to criminalize individuals that exhibit active or even potentially subversive behaviors, thoughts, or ideals. Similarly, depriving them of the right to bear arms, regardless of the intent of the second amendment, reduces their capacity to effect governmental change in the event of a breakdown in the democratic process. If those with opinions acceptable to the establishment are possessed of both right and might, and those who disagree are deprived of both, then such a system no longer represents the will of the people, but that of the government itself.

I agree that capitalism is useful, but must be controlled. Its a powerful motivational force and drives creative innovation, but left unchecked it will result in the consolidation of wealth into the hands of a few. So, how did we go from regulation to deregulation? How did we come to hold such self-destructive ideas on how society should be run? How did our politicians become such hallow embodiments of the superficial differences between our two "parties." Because humans have a predisposition to abdicate individual thought in the presence of group think. I could go on at great length, but most of America identifies themselves by these social groups and individual thought and expression is repressed. Personal strengths are funneled into systems that support the group ideal, in accordance with its values and mores. Long story short, people end up following themselves, much like herd animals. Those that would act as shepherds have tremendous power over such a society. Strike down the current shepherd and another will simply rise to its place. Immunize the population against such a mechanism of control and you cure the illness, not merely the symptom.

I humbly submit that the 1% are merely a symptom of the underlying problem. A flawed bias towards social conformity which supercedes rational decision making.
