I will be attending Stern as a freshman this fall. Any advice you wanna give a poor, lost fishie? by To-The-Endin nyu

When I'm drunk I'm extra neurotic about typing correctly... my friends can tell when I'm drunk texting because then and only then I won't make typos, haha.

I'm copying and pasting my response from a similar topic a few months back:

Alright, senior in Stern here. I apologize in advance for this being a little disorganized; forgive me, I'm drunk. During freshman year, live in apartment-style housing (unless you can get into Hayden. You can only really get into Hayden if you were accepted early though). Join a club or other organization. It sounds dumb but it's fucking hard to make friends here, and that's coming from a really sociable person. I was miserable here until I joined a fraternity, but obviously that's not for everyone. Get a fake ID ASAP. Don't be worried about getting written up in dorms. Nothing happens unless you get written up over and over. Freshmen stress too much about it. Save money by cooking for yourself (one reason I say to get apartment-style housing, they have kitchens). Don't buy weed in Washington Square Park (or anywhere on the street, generally). Try to take advantage of some of the city's cultural offerings. Museums, parks, plays, sports games etc can be really fun, and cheap for students, but easy to put off until next week ad infinitum. Academically: Go to all of your goddamn classes, no matter how boring. Go to office hours as often as you can, especially if you like the professor. Building relationships with professors is an amazing asset that I failed to recognize until the past year or so. Plan to study abroad. Amazing experience. I was in the World Studies Track (a program that was 2 semesters abroad + some extra coursework, not sure if they are offering it any more), best choice I made all of NYU. Again, join a club or other organization and take leadership positions as soon as possible. Before you know it you're gonna be competing against your classmates for jobs and shit gets ruthless. There are a million billion finance majors competing for the same jobs and anything that distinguishes you on your resume will come in handy. I'm assuming you'll major in finance because everyone does. On the topic of distinguishing yourself, consider getting a minor in another school. Everyone gets a worthless international business minor and that shit is dumb, you're not fooling anyone. Also, if all of your classes are in Stern you'll get sick of your classmates reallllly quickly.

TIL Buckfast Tonic Wine (15% ABV) contains the caffeine equivalent of six cups of coffee and, among other things, accounted for 5,638 crimes in three years in a small region of Scotland. by jfjlaxin todayilearned

Buckfast is the devil. I'll be damned if I didn't have a great time when I drank it, but the hangover was absolutely brutal. It was literally the closest to death I've ever felt.

Don't forget Angel's Share. Similar vibe, good drinks, expensive. I think the age of the "speakeasy" is just about ending by now though.

If you can live the life of anybody, fiction or nonfiction, who would you be? by Lvl_6_Squirtlein AskReddit

I've thought about this a bit, and I think Lil' Wayne would be a pretty excellent choice. Say what you will about his music, but he probably has the luxury of doing just about anything he pleases at a moment's notice.

edit: The codeine/promethazine addiction would probably be annoying though.

One of my friends had a parrot that would scream his name non-stop because his mom yelled at him a lot. Most annoying house ever.

I walked through a set for that movie on Third Ave this summer. Really cool, plus there were a ton of people in retro clothes hanging out too.

Thomas Jacobson Construction does some good work, and has a focus on sustainability to boot. I have a friend who works there, but wouldn't recommend the company if I hadn't seen some of their projects, both complete and in process. Extremely high quality.

I have a pretty unique last name - there are about a dozen of us in Seattle and four in Wisconsin who we'd never met. On a whim, my parents decided to invite them on a trip to the west coast and see what they're like. Turns out they're some backwoods ass motherfuckers.

There were a lot of notable interactions, but this was my favorite: Their favorite hobby is bear hunting. That in itself is fine, but the way they do it is hilarious. They put a box of Krispy Kremes in the middle of a field, and when the bears go eat the donuts, they shoot them with shotguns. When they described this, I had to excuse myself from the table to laugh elsewhere.

TL;DR Krispy Kreme bear hunting.
