[Preview] "Mermaids: The Body Found" (Animal Planet) - I don't even... by nobody_nowherein Documentaries

TED has been around since the 80's. I have a feeling that any movement that attempts to raise the bar of public knowledge gets attacked. Especially now that TED has grown so much because of the internet.

The idea of correlating aquatic apes to mermaids is ridiculous and dangerous. But I feel that the Aquatic Ape idea is worth looking into and any real scientist should consider all possibilities until it is ruled out.

Atheists, how do you explain the extremely low chances for us existing as just a coincidence? by bryce1234in DebateAnAtheist

Imagine you are a single blade of grass in a large field. Hundreds of feet away there is a golfer who is going to hit a golf ball and its going to land on only 5 or so blades of grass out of the whole field. Do you think the blades of grass that the ball lands on think the probability of it was too high thus the ball must have intended to land there?

Rare things happen all the time. You say that the odds are low, but I say the odds are virtually guaranteed given the amount of space and time available.

I modeled this after the Arc de Triomphe outside the Louvre in Paris. It's going to be apart of the city walls once i build them :p

For the near half century following the Kennedy administration, Democrats created nearly twice as many private-sector jobs as Republicans. by keg98in politics

[–]Vitruvious 0 points1 point ago

I think we need to get away from phrasing the argument that congress creates jobs at all. The elite may set the conditions that lead to the public creating jobs, but job creating does not fall to a small section of the populations. The public needs to understand that we are the driving force behind all activities, and our passive acceptance of our condition allows those with money to claim credit and more power.

How deep is a pad foundation (Not really a architecture post, but r/construction only has 300 readers) by PerthroXIIIin architecture

[–]Vitruvious 0 points1 point ago

Depends entirely on the ground you are building on. You need to have your foundation sit on either bedrock, or enough engineered soil to have stability. You absolutely need to get boring samples and an engineer

Today's architects already have over inflated ego's.... no need to exacerbate the problem.

[–]Vitruvious 2 points3 points ago*

It's introverted because your design decisions are self-referential and not made from the outside context. For example, your window placement is derived from centering of the room, or bed and not what you see when you look out the window, or the entry door placement by virtue of functionality and symmetry as opposed to an interaction with the outside world.

Right now your project exists in an abstract space and could be orientated in any direction and in any context. A project is taken to the next level by responding the it's specific environment and specific plot of land. If I can rotate your project by 90 degree and it is essentially the same, then your project isn't as successful as it can be. When you respond to the path of the sun, the culture of the neighborhood, the views, the wind, your project will only work in that configuration and rotating it would destroy it.

You obviously already possess a lot of skill in understanding how to put forms together, now you just need to work on composition. You already know how to play a guitar, now just make that baby sing!!

Working on your first projects is really exciting! I'm glad you are starting to dive into the world of architecture. I think what people really don't understand about architecture is how incredibly complex it is. Architecture is much much more than the assembly of materials and structural soundness. I like to think of architects as surgeons of our built environment. Our insertions, our cuts, our rearrangements must work in a larger context, or the host (neighborhood, vicinity) will reject it. Our design must respond to the sites context and allow the various 'vectors' of use to carry through. (existing circulations, use, views, culture, etc).

For the most part, your plans look like they are functional (except the dining room seems a bit forced and i dont think you'd be able to fit stacking washer dryers under that stair). However, these things are all minor when you start to look at the building as apart of a larger system. Your design is very introverted and pragmatic.

Keep it up, design is not easy. You have begun to resolve some important issues, but dont forget about taking into account human sensibilities. Think about how light will come into the space, think about the sizing of volumes as you walk through it, think about how your building will be understood as you drive down the street...
