TROPHY CASE

What hard truth does Reddit need to hear? by TheJungleVIPin AskReddit

[–]apostrotastrophe 1 point2 points ago

That's very, very true but it doesn't mean we have to disregard the research, just be far more critical.

I remember reading some 1840s studies claiming black people had a specific lung problem that required frequent deep breathing to stay healthy, like the kind induced by hard labour, as well as a particular mental condition that made them biologically lazy - so they had to be coerced into taking care of themselves properly. So logically slavery is a perfect solution! How lucky that we happen to already be doing it!

I've heard that research is starting to show that men and women are a lot more similar neurologically than we'd ever thought before.

Exactly. Listen to a few hundred hours of old Loveline and nothing becomes clearer. People who go for these types will do it over and over and over again, looking for someone to treat them badly or otherwise reenact childhood issues (although that's not a conscious thought).

I would go the other way with this and instead say all people are crazy at some times and in some ways, some have more of it than others, but in general most are sane overall even if they have nutty moments.

Is that genetic, though, or related to testosterone levels?

The easy solution to this is don't date someone you can't stand.

How many of you have paid for your meal at a wedding? My gf and I are expected to pay $80-100 each for our meals at an upcoming wedding, the bride says its an "unspoken tradition" by bootsmegamixin AskReddit

[–]apostrotastrophe 11 points12 points ago

I think that's the deal, right? The whole point of the present or cash gift is to pay back some of the cost of the evening (particularly the meal and drinks).

No, no, no, no!! I'm not saying it's a choice at all! This is my worst miscommunication ever.

I'm not a science person, so maybe I'm wrong on this, but things can be biological without being genetically inherited, can't they? A difference in hormone levels at a particular time during gestation, perhaps? That's all I was trying to say.

I moved into a new house and have just realised that the ventilation system allows everyone to hear what goes on in my room. Which has, up to now, mainly been lots of masturbation. How do I laugh this one off? by Tutsmahbarrehin AskReddit

This is the best. Chances are they've been going "no..... That's not... She's not..... Is she??" and already half-convincing themselves it's not what they think.

If a law passed requiring an iq/lifeskills test in order to procreate would you vote for it? by MastodonMetalin AskReddit

[–]apostrotastrophe 1 point2 points ago

And yet surely we could decide when people have lost that right, the way we take away rights when we send people to jail. If you have proven you cannot be a responsible parent because of addiction, violence, unstable mental condition (not based on beliefs/opinions/values/wealth), you are going to violate the basic human rights of your children. Regardless of anyone's belief, some things are objectively harmful - we know the kinds of consequences there are, and we know it because of widely accepted scientific research.

[–]apostrotastrophe 21 points22 points ago

Absolutely. All you need to do to see this is look back at how many women vehemently opposed female suffrage. No thinking person today would say that being denied the vote isn't oppression, and yet there they were protesting against the idea.

New Girl, worth it? by EbilSmurfsin television

[–]apostrotastrophe 1 point2 points ago

It's legitimately good. The characters are all quirky, but through the season it's moved away from Quirkytm and towards developed, unique quirks that don't follow a standard model. The guys are really shining, and the writers are experimenting with Jess's character. I think she and Leslie Knope both went through this season one testing ground - if you watch Parks and Rec's first season, Leslie isn't really that likeable and you wouldn't see her as a serious love interest so much. She mellows out in the second season and becomes a much more layered character. It's the same with Jess. She's gotten angry a few times, she's had some relationships, and she's seeming much more like a real person than a big pile of stereotypes.

I use Goodreads to find little-known books. Where do you go to find... obscure reads? by smesch83in books

[–]apostrotastrophe 4 points5 points ago

Used book stores. I rarely think of a book I want to read and then go find it. Usually, I wander into a used shop and just mosey around picking things up. I've found a lot of great books this way, and if they turn out not to be too great, they only cost a dollar or two.

I would also suggest Nick Hornby's Stuff I've Been Reading column.
