'Stay off the internet!' LoL,

You think you found a bomb? I found Soviet TM-62M anti-tank mine with 7kg of explosives while Geocaching. Around 13 of them in 10x10m square. by saldejumsin WTF

[–]brainburger 1 point2 points ago

I'd expect the mine to be pushed into the mud if 500Kg rolled over it. Perhaps the squeezing of the mine itself would amount to less?

If you are an Operating Thetan (OT) you are clear. Level III is quite advanced, so I'd estimate the price of 'clear' at less than $1000.

Life was not a valuable gift, but death was. Life was a fever-dream made up of joys embittered by sorrows, pleasure poisoned by pain; a dream that was a nightmare-confusion of spasmodic and fleeting delights, ecstasies, exultations, happinesses, interspersed with long-drawn miseries, griefs, perils, horrors, disappointments, defeats, humiliations, and despairs--the heaviest curse devisable by divine ingenuity; but death was sweet, death was gentle, death was kind; death healed the bruised spirit and the broken heart, and gave them rest and forgetfulness; death was man's best friend; when man could endure life no longer, death came and set him free.

That's Mark Twain: “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

My Christian friend explains why Scientology is a cult. by mnarjonain atheism

The difference is Scientology actually demands money in order to progress through the religion.

Yeah, don't you find that refreshingly honest? Of course you are under no obligation to progress through Scientology, just as you have no legally-enforceable obligation to pay tithes, although both have significant peer-pressure to contribute. The Christian churches of course collect way more in total.

The Church of Scientology does give to charities, though I don't know what percentage of fees go to that. I am not particularly defending them anyway, I think Scientology is a bad thing.

The Church of England gives 5-10% of its donations to charity, which is a pretty poor show if you ask me.

Oxfam, by comparison spend over 80% of their income directly on their charitable cause.

So if charity is your thing, cut out the churches.

When you see ideas as memes, then religious ideas either copy well, or don't copy well. The intention of the scripture is of interest, but few people are really motivated to follow scripture exactly. There are certain parts that copy well among certain people. This is what gives rise to the hatred of gay people say, but tolerance for clothing of mixed fibres. The NT and OT as a whole is memetically successful. More so than Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental health, but give it time.

I doubt that. Church doctrine is memetic. Churches that collect lots of money are likely continue and to grow, while those that do less well are more likely to die out. The motives of the actual scripture writer might have been about lying, but the reason that the piece of scripture has survived, and churches follow it today is because of the money. Without that, it would be lost to history, or at best relegated to the library.

True facts are important. I don't believe that bible passage is literally true though. It's a fabrication intended to scare church-members into paying up. Whether it's directly about lying or not paying is debatable, but not really germane.

Phew that's alright then. I'd hate it to mar His reputation for perfect love and goodness, or anything.
