I know, I'm trying to stay on a budget. Would I get a big increase from the higher speed ram?

I have a quadro 4000 that I have used for a while now, I'm not very impressed with it. It really lags with high density meshes, which I use a lot. A friend of mine uses a 680 for very similar applications and it just screams. The 4000 only has 256 cores I think. Certainly less than the 680.

I've been modeling for about 10 years now, but I've only started doing any rendering for the past few months.

Question about inlay into steel. by CaptainBrunoin metalworking

[–]celtic_smith 0 points1 point ago

I've done this sort of thing before,

Gold is just great because it is so soft, if you are using anything else just make sure that it is annealed as soft as you can get it, and make sure there is a large undercut in the grooves you are carving so it does not fall out :-)

I'm thinking sapphires and niobium. Suggestions? by Vaiduryain Portal

[–]celtic_smith 2 points3 points ago

I had a quick go at the concept and it turned out like this

There are no blue metals, sorry.

The idea here, as with most andonized rings is that the recessed areas get the color and everything else is polished. The color is then protected in the pockets and does not come off.

It's no problem at all,

A few things though:

1 Niobium can't be forged, You are going to have to model them on a computer and find a machine shop that can cut them out for you. You can also use titanium for this is it also andonizes nicely, and may be easier to get someone to work with it. I can also do the modelling for you if you like.

2 Get some scrap pieces to practice your andonization. You can buy commercial machines for this, or if you are handy with a soldering iron you can build one yourself. When you are doing this you have to clean the hell out of the ring, if thre is so much a a fingerprint on it the oxide layer will not form. Check out www.riogrande.com and www.reactivemetals.com for the gear and electrolite solutions.

The andonization on the rings in that style will wear off very quickly, you are creating an oxide layer that is only microns thick. I would recommend that you redesign the rings to give you a recessed area that you can color. You will also be unable to set the gems in niobium, you will have to weld in a silver or gold bezel for the gems.

Your idea is kick-ass, and I don't mean to be a killjoy. If you are making these yourself and need any help with the execution just shoot me a pm, I would be glad to give you some pointers or advice.
