It sounds fine. I never used the eq in the old head unit. If anything I like it better because it doesn't do the ridiculous light show my old head unit used to.

It's very straight forward. The amp has a "power select" terminal. I believe when that terminal is tied to 12V, the amp will turn on and draw power from its main rails. I just wired that terminal through the switch.

For the volume knob, it's a stereo potentiometer. I ran audio in one end and out the brush contact. The other end was tied to ground making a simple voltage divider.

Edit: and I should mention, the amp was an off the shelf car audio amp that sits in the trunk.

Yeah, I have a cable in the compartment below that connects to the amp in my trunk. I keep a portable radio in the back seat that I can plug if the need arises.
