A chess prodigy explains how his mind works by plebsin videos

[–]chewbie 1 point2 points ago

For knowing quite a lot of chessmaster there isn't anything in this video that differentiate them from him.

They all (and any chess player with sufficiently experience) have this intuition of seeing instantly their move. You still have to check it because when you reach a certain level ANY imprecision equals loosing the game. So you cannot take the chance.

I saw people knowing by heart thousands of games as well. It's really impressing but I would say that very common among chess grandmaster.

Is he a "genius"? I have no idea, is he "alone"? He might be young but there are regularly very young and very good chess players, so I think it is quite exagerated.

That said being a chess grandmaster is a formidable feat and in now way do I want to belittle him, it's just that the video is needlessly trying to say that he is "alone" in this case.

I don't mean to disrespect, but at what level are you playing?

While I agree that you can try to influence your opponent by external factor (such as your speed, your body language...), I never saw any player at a competitive level try to "sacrificing a piece unsoudnly". That's way too risky and easy to see when the game is basically played at near optimum level and having any disadvantage in pieces is basically loosing the game.

Hmm isn't a moth an asexual being, and that's why they have to morph (not sure of the correct word in english) into a butterfly to "indulge in carnal pleasure" ?

Except for that, I totally agree about the amazing evolution part :)

How U.S. Lost Out on iPhone Work and Why jobs are not coming back to America. by reddit_clonein technology

[–]chewbie -1 points0 points ago

The people who replied to you consistently said that the problem is not the price of the average hour of work, but the fact that you can find there services you can't find elsewhere.

It is THE place to make stuff not because it is cheap, but because the offer top notch services, services you can't find anywhere else...

IF you could find this services elsewhere, even for a much higher price, then there would be an alternative. But at the moment there is none.

Holding websites like YouTube and Reddit accountable for user generated content, is like holding alcohol companies accountable for drunk driving. by theknowmadin politics

[–]chewbie 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think so, in your metaphor there is a big flaw : the alcohol companies are nowhere to be seen when the alcohol is delivered to the consumer. But websites can see the content generated and to some extent who is seing it. So if you want to compare user generated content and alcohol the websites are closer to a tavern or bar, in the sense that a bar can see what is being serve and to whom.

A quick search did not give me any hint on those one :

  • If you squint your eyes while there is wind, your eyes will stay that way...
  • If you eat your soup you will be tall
  • The link between getting a cold and not covering enough (I'm still not sure about this one... I think I read somewhere that the link is not direct... But you'll have to look it up :p)

At least it's common things parents say to their children in France... I dunno about the rest of the world...

I read about that too. It seems that running away is pretty common among Alzheimer patients. But I have no idea if the idea caught on other places.

I think the worse is when they have a momentary recall. My grand-mother once went to my mother telling her "Yesterday we spoke and I didn't remember who you were... What's wrong with me?".

I think it was one of the more shocking moment I witnessed and I can't imagine the effect on my mother.

Just curious, for people that speak more than one language. What language do you think in? by jatdin AskReddit

[–]chewbie 0 points1 point ago

First language is French, but I'm billingual in english.

The thing is I read almost exclusevely things in English most of the time (everytime I m on the internet, and since I work in IT, I'm basically on internet all day long), save for a couple of article online on french newspapers' website.

I tend to monologue in english, which is reaaaally bothering since now my close circle (gf and co worker) do not speak english, so sometimes I'm "stuck" having trouble to translate my thoughts back in french...

I have to disagree with that. I am raising a child, which is 2 year and half currently, and he knows not to run on a road. Actually he knows that to run anywhere outside he first have to ask the permission.

A child really early is really intelligent and can learn a lot... saying that children are irrationnal before 8 is simply not correct.

I am not saying that the "leash" is never good, and of course I understand that some children are easier than others, and I guess that for some it would be a lesser evil. But I do think that in a lot of case it is an easy route for the parents.

It's weird, it's kind of hard to retrieve the original quote in french since "lonely" and "alone" is the same word in french, so it would not make much sense. I haven't been able to find anything close on french websites... So either the original quote was made in english (I am not sure if he wrote texts directly in english, but that's a possibility), or it smells fishy

Aren't snake divided between venomous and constrictor? A snake can be both?

If that's the case I found a whole new reason to be afraid of snakes.

I would add to the work together part, our ability to use tools. Give someone a nice gun to shoot that thing from far away and that's ok. Pretty much the same with all other animals.

But in a one on one with just our body as weapon, we are pretty lame, there is a fuck ton of predator species out there who could fuck us up.
