People here loooove Malta... I can't quite get around the taste of it. Most of the visitors we get from the States can't stand the stuff.

Did not know that the inventor of Kola Champagne was the first person to fire a shot against the US in Puerto Rico in the Spanish American war... (The More You Know!)

World's Cheapest White Sand Beaches? by yunbldin travel

[–]dfekt 1 point2 points ago

Can't beat the $5 round trip ticket from Fajardo. A $5 Taxi on the island will get you to Flamenco Beach, which is the nicest beach I've ever been on, and people keep saying it's the "second nicest beach in the world." White sand, wonderful clean water, it's really really beautiful. A 30 minute hike over some hills from there will get you to some amazing snorkeling too.

A comparison of the Qumran manuscript of Isaiah with the Massoretic text revealed them to be extremely close in accuracy to each other: "A comparison of Isaiah 53 shows that only 17 letters differ from the Massoretic text. Ten of these are mere differences in spelling (like our "honor" and the English "honour") and produce no change in the meaning at all. Four more are very minor differences, such as the presence of a conjunction (and) which are stylistic rather than substantive. The other three letters are the Hebrew word for "light." This word was added to the text by someone after "they shall see" in verse 11. Out of 166 words in this chapter, only this one word is really in question, and it does not at all change the meaning of the passage. We are told by biblical scholars that this is typical of the whole manuscript of Isaiah

From this example, 1000 years passed and 17 letters changed from the original manuscript, without affecting the meaning. I suppose it's possible that there are places in the old testament that have been altered slightly over generations, but that's not enough to question the integrity of the manuscript. You also can't assume they're making copies of copies of copies, eroding like a game of telephone. Several generations might have worked off the same manuscript over hundreds of years.

Rap Artist Go After Atlanta Mega-Church Pastors Eddie Long and Creflo Dollar // About time the Gospel music industry starts to shut these Wolves down! by StreetPreacherin Christianity

[–]dfekt 0 points1 point ago

Definitely worth the listen. At the end he says this:

"I know a lot of y'all was okay with this song until now. You've got people like Creflo Dollar, where we're standing at right now, preaches nothing but heresy. he preaches not the orthodox view of the trinity, but he also preaches against Christ's deity. And he's all about prosperity. If anybody goes to this church right here, Eddie Long's church, after all the sexual scandals, and all his heretical preaching over the years, I pray that you would come out, because it's doctrines of demons. Google the names, look up websites like www.alittleleaven.com, and please, do your research. Look at whole messages and I pray, come up out of these churches in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen."

Also regarding the scribes (and the OT): Yes, they copied by hand (as was the technique of the time period) But they did it meticulously, word for word, and discarded entire manuscripts when mistakes were made. These weren't guys hastily jotting stuff down, they were incredibly careful. I would suggest that their technique actually reduced errors. Comparisons have been made between the work of Masoretic scribes from the 10th century AD and documents 1000 years older, and they found very few differences. And even then, it was mostly inconsequential changes like spelling, conjunctions, etc. It's not unreasonable to assume that today's Old Testament is very close to what Ezra read 2500 years ago.

How many of you have actually read the bible, cover to cover? by themaskeduglyin Christianity

[–]dfekt 1 point2 points ago

I've read it cover-to-cover once, and in parts a few more times, probably. I don't think it's a book you can completely understand reading one time, so it takes a lifetime of reading and study. I read it everyday. I think everybody who considers themselves to be Christians should read it cover to cover. Most people my age (upper 20s) who are serious about their faith have read it, but not everyone in the pews has.

Fireproof is one of the most dreadful movies I've ever seen

Far be it from me to defend the artistic vision of the film, but I think Fireproof, along with Courageous and the other movies those guys have made, gets a bad rap. Yes, they drag and the plot is bungled and the characters are flawed and the production isn't great. But I found redeeming value in them from their message, so that's how I approach these movies: It's an affirming, inspiring sermon told through the medium of film. I think the creators are pretty unapologetic that that's exactly what they're doing. So if you take issue with the film, start there. Now, there are other redeeming films, too so it is possible to pull off a technically sound and inspiring movie. But Fireproof and Courageous, I think, did exactly what they were supposed to do.

I'll second this. Got it last year living out of market, and I watched at least part of probably 3/4 of the Tigers games. You can stream them all in HD for like .75 a game. Absolutely worth it.
