I wish there was some way of winding down the military operations in Afghanistan without leaving the country in total chaos. We are dealing with a poor, backward and a broken state divided into warring tribal regions, and clearly mediating those disputes with 21st century weapons is not working. The problem is poverty and backwardness combined with religious fundamentalism, and I wish someone would come along and show a better solution for solving that problem in that part of the world without guns. I personally have no fucking idea... my best hope is that the recently discovered metal cache in Afghanistan will transform the country into a prosperous nation, but I'm afraid that is far away.
