TROPHY CASE

Truly isolated on a bike ride through rural Ohio by scottie0083in bicycling

[–]frikk 4 points5 points ago

What part of Ohio? Biking in the country-side is so great. Especially if you have the patience to explore the non-two-lane roads. Finding a 100 year old road that winds through thickets and around old propertylines is so great... although it can get you lost as a schmost.

What are some tasty well-made low-ish alcohol beers? 3-5% by poekoelanin beer

I just had 21st amendment's bitter american. 4.4% and it was so awesome. Also stone's levitation.

You're probably wanting to search around for "Session" beers.

Specific gravity is too low in my first batch. What should I do? by clydefrog11in Homebrewing

[–]frikk 0 points1 point ago

If you used N pounds of extra in X gallons of water, you will have a gravity reading of (1+) (N.036)/X. So 10lb of extract in 5lb water will give you (10.036)/5 = 1.072OG.

If you're reading lower than this it means one of three things:

1) You have too much water, aka you diluted your final wort. Boil off or just make it as-is.

2) You didn't stir properly when taking a gravity reading. This is a common problem and simply means you measured wort where the extract wasn't mixed well. Perhaps pour into fermenter, shake it up, then measure it.

3) You measured it too hot. Anything over 110F is not reliable, and anything above 60F needs to be correct with the calculator I posted above.

No problemo.

Take a gravity reading every day for 3 days. When gravity doesn't change, you're good to bottle. Although 1.010 is pretty low so you're probably just about done.

Hi there.

I recommend reading the online How to Brew guide. You're missing a bit of information, and believe it or not I also made this mistake when I started out. http://www.howtobrew.com/

There is nothing wrong with your beer from what I can tell. Your hydrometer is reading 1.010 gravity because that's what the beer if FINISHING at. You already fermented your sugars into alcohol and that 1.010 represents how much sugar is left in the beer, likely unfermentable. 1.010 is normal.

Let's say you made your beer just about right and you're in the middle of the suggested OG on that data sheet you linked. 1.045.

That means you made wort with 1.045 gravity. Your yeast ate a bunch of it up and now you have 1.010. That means .035 gravity points were converted to alcohol during fermentation.

So then you go to the ABV calculator and you find that starting at 1.045 and ending at 1.010 leaves you with 4.7% ABV.

That 2% you're reading is 'Potential Alcohol' and doesn't mean much. If you had a cider, for example, that started at 1.010 and you fermented down to 1.000 you would have 2% ABV cider.

Straining your wort would do nothing except for adding oxygen which is a good thing for your yeast.

Tap water is fine.

Temperature is fine, 75F will not kill your yeast. If kept there for days, you may get some "off flavors", but that's it.

Good luck and when in doubt, Relax, Don't Worry; Enjoy A Homebrew :)

I don't understand this. I grew up in an environment where prescription drugs were foreign and never to be considered unless you were stricken with something severe and immediately life threatening. I do not understand why on earth we have drug commercials directly to consumers. Can you answer me that? Every time I see one I think "This should be up to a doctor, not me as a consumer. Why are they trying to convince me I need this drug? It seems that if I were sick I would need it, end of story.". It just feels so... dirty.
