Sorry for the flash, but what makes the M16 better than the garland action? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

[–]gus_frings_tequila[S] 1 point2 points ago

Tell me more, why is it more inherently accurate? Accuracy has a lot to do with repeatability. What makes the stoner rifle more accurate?

autocorrect. Plus, you've never decorated christmas trees with guns?

Thanks for the reply. So the AR is more reliable? I always hear that the AR design craps where it eats and, hence (I suppose) fails on occasion. Never hear much about the garand action failing. Popularity has something to do with this without a doubt. You'll here about the failures of the most common platforms but not about the failures of a less used action.

I'll check into the operating rod.

I'll admit I am stupid. But I'm okay with that. What I want to be is less stupid. So why is the action of an AR-15 preferred over the action of a garand?

Not working. I filed it down to the square part and it still won't go full auto. How much further do I need to go? For the record it's a mossberg 12 ga double barrel ar-15. I'd say it was made in the early 1700's. REal collector's piece is what the guy at the gun show said when I bought if off him.

Shoot me straight Gunnit, does the S&W walther ppk suck or not? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

[–]gus_frings_tequila[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, The weird thing is I keep seeing (and hearing from the local shop) that the older imported ppk are much, much better. Then there is a bunch of weirdness about weapons laws and imputation rules.

i'm not gonna lie, I'm only buying this cause James Bond used it. Movie guns make me happy.

A little more context. This isn't a self defense purchase or anything, more of a "I just like guns" purchase. But I don't like sucky guns so I'm wondering if I should get an older, non S&W, one used or if the newish ones are just as good as the older ones.

Reddit, I'm absolutely devastated. My baby daughter was just diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Where can I find positive and inspiring stories about people having a quality life with cerebral palsy? Are there any redditors out there with cp that have any advice? by jeffmathin AskReddit

[–]gus_frings_tequila 0 points1 point ago

don't worry about positive or inspiring stories. Those are all lies. It will suck, but having a kid sucks. The odd thing is that you won't care. As much as a kid intrudes on your life, autistic, palsied, whatever, you won't care. Because you'll be all about the kid.

Where I live they say "Bless his soul" when they are done insulting someone. It works like:

"Peanut? He's just a dirty person. LIves like an animal. He drinks a fifth of whiskey every night and beats his wife. We'll that's what I've heard any way. Bless his soul"

You can put anything in front of "Bless his soul" no one thinks much of it. I guess it is code for gossip or something.

If this worked for SOPA/PIPA, why can't we, as a gunloving internet community, get even a fraction of this momentum against the anti-gun bills and for the pro-gun ones? by deathsythein guns

Voting you up cause you're kinda right. But wish it was half a vote because of the baseball bat example.

So the bat starts out as a club, it is just for violence. And dammit, it is pretty good at that. But enough people use it for sport that the connotation changes in people's mind. The baseball goes from a implement of violence to a sporting implement. Hey, who wouldn't give a six year old a baseball bat? Sure, they'll tell them to be careful and all but they'll sit in the bleachers and watch the kid swing a repurposed weapon all day long.

SO you have this great example of repurposing, remember that a bat is still a damn fine weapon, and somehow reach the conclusion that the only way to make people more accepting of guns is by scaring the bejeesus out of them. Sure, sporting use turned bats from weapons into little league but that can't work for guns?

You need this to protect yourself from the other monkeys is fucking scary. You need this because it is fun, because it is a sport is attractive an encompassing.

I think you found the solution and then argued against it.

IS it illegal to kill snakes in Tennessee? CCI SHotshell - xpost youtube tnoutdoors9 by grahf822in guns

[–]gus_frings_tequila 0 points1 point ago

From Tennessee Gun Owners: .70-4-102 says it is illegal to kill (among other things) any animal in the state except as set forth by Title 70 of the T.C.A. There is no hunting season for snakes listed.

.39-14-205 has to do with the killing of an animal when comes to protecting you from harm or your life or the life of one of your animals.

So the you tuber is correct, you can't shoot snakes in TN. But why would you want to? Deadly snake bites are less common than deadly lightning strikes and people don't go around shooting clouds to teach them a lesson.

Vintage, somewhat rare gun: keep to save, keep to use, or sell? by addedpulpin guns

Shoot it at least once. If you love it, keep it. If you'd love the dough more sell it. Just letting it sit in a safe to appreciate seems to be a waste to me.

Hey Gunnit, tell me the truth: Is the break in period bullshit? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

Hey Gunnit, tell me the truth: Is the break in period bullshit? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

[–]gus_frings_tequila[S] 1 point2 points ago

I suppose that car engines have tighter tolerances than 1911's. I've worked in the automotive industry before and they measure things in thousandths of an inch. Because they are stupid and won't go metric. I bet thousandth is too small for Kimber to worry about.

So maybe you have a point. Maybe Hoag or Yost are the equivalent of really finely tuned engines (I'm guessing those are manufacturers of fine fire arms). Except here's the thing: Fucking NASCAR. Those guys run badass cars without break ins. They run finely engineered machines. Yeah they take more maintenance that your average car but they work as built.

I'm becoming more convinced that the break in period is code speak for we can't get it right the first time.

Hey Gunnit, tell me the truth: Is the break in period bullshit? by gus_frings_tequilain guns

[–]gus_frings_tequila[S] 3 points4 points ago

Because metal expands as it heats and tight tolerances mean that as things expand there needs to be a little wear on working surfaces. It seems to me that the newer CNC cut parts and better materials and lubricants (and cleaner powders) have demoted the break in process from a norm to a near exception its important to be aware of its existence.

Crap man, my car has a freaking engine in it! I'm screwed!

Really, if the problem is that metal heats up they have an issue with engineering. If CNC helps then it tells me that the tolerances weren't right to begin with. I'm starting to suspect that hand fitting is the culprit, you get things a little to tight and let wear move them to perfect.

Interesting points, sincere thanks!

Couldn't say that he did clean it, couldn't say that he didn't. Wonder why they would sticky grease when shipping guns though. I can how that could really mess up the action I'll suggest a complete cleaning to him. Hopefully it helps.

It's a Kimber that looks like a pretty normal 1911 to me. I don't know all the models but it is full sized. So a 1200 dollar full sized kimber.

I don't think it is technique related, he's shot my 92fs plenty of times and never had a problem. Though that might be a more forgiving firearm.

As for the kind of malfunctions I couldn't say overall. The time I was there I didn't pay a lot of attention but I think, from our conversations, it was failure to feed and stovepipes. Wait, that isn't quite right. All I can say for sure is that it wasn't light strikes or something like that. If the ammo was in the right place it went boom.

I only say that because he had to rack the slide to get it to load at least twice. I don't want to pretend I know more than I do about the failings of the gun.

I still, honestly don't get it. I expect a can opener to work right out the box. I expect a car to work right off the showroom floor. I honestly expect guns to work as well (mine have but the collection is small and lame: 92fs, 10/22 and a bitching phoenix 22)

How many rounds would you say is a reasonable number for break in?

Thanks for your time.
