Looking into ECE field by Aulexin ECE

[–]gusaroo 1 point2 points ago

It would not be a useless degree. I wasn't an engineering major, but I've been out in the work world for 10 years. Engineering programs are very challenging, and everyone knows it. At the very least, you'll have a piece of paper that proves you're really smart. That is valuable, believe me.

My opinions on the current state of PC gaming due to console market saturation. Would like input from others to either justify my claims or call me crazy. by Von243in truegaming

Interesting. I have a similar background and went the opposite direction, even though I have always been and will always remain a giant computer nerd.

I think it was around the time that the 3DFX Voodoo5 was becoming the standard, had-to-have-it graphics card. I didn't have much cash and I was looking at these cards and thinking, well, you're basically putting a giant computer inside your computer, and it costs about the same as the best consoles.

I also was a PC gamer back in the days when you had to have a different boot disc for every game you wanted to play (with custom autoexec.bat and config.sys to free up every possible byte of conventional memory). And that memory haunted me.

I also hated the bugs. Crashes, incompatibility, omg. The consoles just worked.

Console gaming also changed how I used computers. I switched to a laptop and ditched the desktop (and freed up the desk). Then I ditched Windows for Linux and never looked back. I can also keep the same computer around for years and years and not worry that my hardware won't keep up with the software I want.

Today I'm a total console gamer. Though I sometimes flirt with some of the open-source gaming for Linux, just cause it's cool. But I love my PS3. I got it hooked up to a big-ass high-def TV, and I got my wireless controllers, and gaming is just so simple.

But I tell you one thing that has nearly made me change religions: Mods.

What style of banjo does Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse play? by EnSandyin banjo

[–]gusaroo 3 points4 points ago

Clawhammer is incredibly fun. I played piano, guitar and mandolin for many years before I ever touched the banjo. I flat-picked guitar off-and-on for 20 years. Then I taught myself clawhammer just a couple of years ago and have never had so much fun with music in my life. The banjo is an extraordinary instrument and is now easily my favorite.

Just do your work, do some fun stuff on the side, and try to enjoy yourself and you'll be fine.

This. I have found independent life to be pretty straightforward if you're fairly intelligent and can show up mostly on time.

Why when I log in to my account do the comments show up from most recent to oldest instead of sorted by karma? by gusarooin help

I'm logged in and looking around for these sorting options you speak of and not finding them. I swear I'm not as dumb as I must sound. I can't tell you how many times I've looked and not figured this out. :)

Why do many programmers say Lisp is a great language? by Omegaliskin learnprogramming

I've always wondered this about recursion. It seems like a beautiful programming solution, but wouldn't calling the same function recursively create a spiral of function calls (and stack frames) that you then need to climb out of? I feel like computers can handle loops very efficiently, as opposed to dealing with the pushes, pops and returns that N function calls would require.

Interesting idea about the white powder. I actually do find that believable. I've heard that male aristocrats way back in, I dunno, medieval times, would grow their nails long because it showed they didn't have to do hard labor.

People who do physical work wear practical clothing that helps them do their jobs. But executives wear clothing that is totally impractical and useless. They have to make sure their shiny shoes don't get scuffed. White shirts can't get dirty. Ties just flop around (and would get caught in machinery).
