I'm already doing this with my 3GS and a GoPhone plan. Much cheaper than the standard smartphone packages. I'll most likely get the new iPhone this year though and go back to a two-year contract.

Yeah it's a Mini DP to VGA. I have a Mini DP to HMDI too (that I use for my TV), I'll give that a try.

10.7.3, late 2010 MBP. Monitor is an LG Flatron E2360.

This happens when I plug in my MBP to an external LG monitor. It doesn't happen every time, just sometimes when the MBP has been asleep. It also doesn't affect most of UI elements of the OS, just the menubar and things like Quicksilver. Restarting fixes it, but that's a pain. Any other ideas?

You're doing it right. I come from a CS background, but getting a job in development is much more about what you can practically do than how well you can analyze algorithms. Graduating college shows you're determined and the fact that you're teaching yourself web development shows you're willing and able to learn new things. I think making a few example sites is a great way to showcase anything you've learned so far. Good luck!

Geektool is nifty and all but I've found little use for it outside of displaying the time (which is already in the menubar) the day/date (which you probably already know) and the weather (which you probably don't need to constantly know).

This almost exactly describes my old programming style with PHP. From there I moved on to frameworks (Kohana specifically). The MVC pattern still allows you to separate your concerns and adds a bit more flexibility to your apps/sites. You'll still have a main template and other "views" but you can pass in pretty much whatever data you want via the controller.
