Do You Refer To Manhattan As "The City"? by ngrootin nyc

[–]jowampwamp 0 points1 point ago

I grew up in brooklyn. Sometimes when talking to other new yorkers I'll call manhattan "the city", but I get extremely defensive when non-new yorkers feel entitled to tell me that i'm "not from new york city" because sex and the city tell them so.

I'm horrified that a magazine would actually print these things about a woman - especially a magazine that seems to be aimed at tweens/teenagers. by qibain TwoXChromosomes

[–]jowampwamp 8 points9 points ago

Is this guy she's dating over 18? In that case it's no one's business. Magazines like this perpetuate internalized sexism which probably has a worse and more long-lasting impact on women's perceptions of themselves than any stupid comments a man might make.

What are the most prominent or interesting academic debates in your historical field of interest? by EastHastingsin AskHistorians

[–]jowampwamp 1 point2 points ago

I double majored in history and political science at mcgill in montreal. In history, I specialized in cold war diplomatic history and wrote my thesis on the relations between warsaw pact states leading up to martial law in 1981. I'd say that in terms of polish history, my topic is probably as divisive as yours is.

Just out of curiosity, where/what did you study? I wrote my undergraduate thesis on cold war diplomatic history and found this to be a particularly divisive and sensitive topic as well.

Reddit, what is your favorite song that tells a story? by BeBenNovain AskReddit

[–]jowampwamp 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure this REALLY belongs, but "While You Were Sleeping" by Elvis Perkins is beautiful. It's a sort of imagined narration of what happened when his mother died.

In Amsterdam for a month? by Iamnimmsin Amsterdam

[–]jowampwamp 0 points1 point ago

First thing i'd say is when you get out of the train station, don't turn in the direction of the bulldog and all the other cheesy coffee shops-- ask someone which direction the harlemmerdijk is and walk down that-- it'll give you a nicer, less weed and hookers impression of amsterdam from the beginning.

I'm not a fan of this band, and this kind of music doesn't usually appeal to me, but I love this song. I think it's beautiful.
