TROPHY CASE

What would the average compressor HP be for a 400-ton water-cooled chiller? Someone asked me this the other day and I don't know enough about chillers to answer their question. by jthompson68in AskEngineers

We should all aspire to have a random and difficult to convert unit named after us. Right? Or at least that's what everyone seemed to think in the 1700s.

Looking up data sheets is where I got stuck. Any tips? I got into random PDF aggregation sites almost right away from my Google search, and the manufacturer websites just give you 300 page catalogs.

I know quite a bit about energy efficiency and billing, and I know that there are millions of people who want to save money on their electric bills, or at least want to know how to read them. You think that might be a seller? Or is that kind of stuff too technical?

TIL that I simply don't understand the world of marketing at all! Thanks for finding a nice and informative way to tell me that I'm completely talking out of my ass. I do enjoy learning about things like this.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a particular "niche?"

With younger children, once one says that he/she (especially she) has to go to the bathroom, you get at least two to twenty more children saying that they have to go to the bathroom. There's a tipping point there, and you have to avoid it.

I'm a woman in my mid-30's considering dating a guy ten years younger. I'm a little turned off by the age difference but we seem compatible. Thoughts? by [deleted]in AskReddit

[–]jthompson68 2 points3 points ago

Assuming it'll be an LTR are you really going to care about the age difference in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? If you fit well together, you fit well together. Just make sure he isn't a slack-ass who's after your money from your stable source of employment.

It it's a short-term thing: why care at all?

My best friends family are the kindest, most caring and giving people that I've ever met. They are artists, so the economy has been especially rough on them. So if there were a god, everyone would be happy and well and would live forever? A benevolent god that would only create, and never destroy? What kind of existence would that be? No evolution, no changes in culture, no technological progress, no art, no love, no appreciation for the short time that we have on this world? No fear of losing the small gifts we've earned or been born into? What a ridiculous premise.

Holy shit, that might actually be a really good sci-fi book. Complete stagnation as a species, so the protagonist kills god to replace the old world with a dynamic and interesting one. Too bad I can't write.

A disclaimer: This isn't religious advice, in case you're anti-religious.

Bad things happen to everyone. The best thing you can do with a bad situation is pray. And I don't mean that you need to ask an unknown being for a positive result, I mean that you should sit down, relax, and think about all of the positive and happy outcomes that are possible, and think about how amazingly lucky we are to live in a time when cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. How lucky we are that even those with terminal cancer are able to die comfortably, and that we have a reasonable expectation and understanding of the events which will lead up to their passing.

Death and sickness are a part of life, and they always have been. The fact that we now understand what is happening to our bodies, and that we have a chance to fight it is nothing less than astounding. You can call it a miracle if you'd like.

My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer a year and a half ago. She's finally through chemo, and ended up having a full hysterectomy and double-mastectomy. But she is happy and cancer free now.

My Grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer two and a half years ago and is now cancer free, but the treatment took such a toll on her health that she will likely never leave her nursing home.

We were either placed in this world to experience life (hardships included) or we ended up here on accident and we simply experience life by complete chance. The end result is the same. Be thankful for the small pieces of happiness that we are allowed. Be thankful that we live in a marvelous age where life after cancer is possible. Acknowledge your sadness, but meditate on all that you have to be thankful for.

Here's your argument:

What the fuck is pinterest? Why spend more time on some social networking site, when you could be out in the word ACTUALLY socially networking? It's a trap, an excuse to keep you from living your life. An excuse to procrastinate from asking the girl you like out in person. An excuse not to go out and meet your future husband or wife.

When you are dying at age 114, your chief concern won't be making your last post on facebook or pinterest or whatever-the-fuck. You will only have your experiences and the relationships you've made through them. There is no online equivalent of drinking in a pub with friends, no analog to the excitement of bringing a stranger into your bed, no socially shared image that can compare to watching the sun rise on a beach with the girl you hope so dearly to spend the rest of your life with.

Social networking is an excuse. It's a way to keep an inch of distance between yourself and actual interaction with another human being. And it's wonderfully addictive and invasive. It's just another drug used to dull the pain of existence. The pain that makes us human.

As a marketing tool, it is only as useful as its novelty. We make decisions based on our emotions. Social networking, as it is now so pervasive and accepted, is exactly as useful as the design on the front of a box of Wheaties. People are fallible, but not as stupid as marketing people think. We want to live our lives. We want to feel that we are making good decisions. We want sex, and excitement, and an advantage so we can be the guy at the water cooler who tells everyone else how great the new breakfast snack is and how many pounds he's lost eating it.

Social networking changes nothing. It's just another venue. It will never be a replacement for real marketing. There are no shortcuts in an industry where everyone is on the technological cusp. There are only good and powerful ideas. This has never changed.

Hey, dude, feel free to use any of this text. But if you get a decent grade let me know so my ego will at least benefit.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. Even if you don't like history you'll like this one. The guy could talk about the intricacies of toilet paper engineering for an hour and it would be interesting.

Also, those guys from "Stuff You Should Know" are always entertaining. You can't go wrong there.

It's like cats have their own extremely subtle body language. Maybe they can beam thoughts into my head. I can never put a finger on exactly how I know what the cat wants. I just seem to know. Not 100% of the time, of course, but I have a pretty darn good track record.

No one has any problem figuring out what my dog wants.

How do I stop giving a shit? by jthompson68in AskReddit

[–]jthompson68[S] 0 points1 point ago

I really do appreciate the fact that there are people like you in the world that would take the time to comfort and advise a complete stranger. It reminds me to put my feelings in check, because everyone goes through shit, and that things do get easier with time.

You may want to retract the offer to listen to me vent, though. I can bitch for days, and turn the most mundane situation into a horribly tangled web of conspiracy and evil.

How about you? I never learned to make small talk, and I've realized lately that it's related to my feeling impolite asking others about their lives. So if I'm being ridiculous let me know. At what point did you feel better about your financial situation? When you had enough on hand to pay bills for a month? Two months? One year? I'm two paychecks ahead of living check-to-check, not taking into account the little bit of money I have in savings and stocks. But this is with budgeting, and any extra expenses come at the cost of my peace of mind. So I'm better off than a lot of people, but still not comfortable.

Is financial happiness just learning to be happy living within your means? I've been taught the opposite my entire life. "Get good grades, go to a great school, get a great job, buy a big fucking boat," or whatever. It seems more and more to me that ambition is a terrible sickness that simply leads to high blood pressure and chronic stress.

I would hate to be one of those apathetic dickheads. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I'm becoming. I don't understand my own motivations, but I am neither a perfectionist nor a perfunctorist. I like kicking ass and being amazing. It works a lot of the time. But when I am unsure of my ability to kick said ass, I get anxious, frustrated, angry. I procrastinate and shut down. I would be the worst recording artist, because when my first single failed to hit the billboard top 100 I would call it quits.

If you ever have kids, never tell them that they're smart and talented and amazing. Talent is nothing without a dedication and a passion to the mastery of your craft. Intelligence is an incredible hindrance if you aren't driven. The most talented people I know regularly tell me that they're nothing special.

Damn those rich teachers by FEW_WURDSin funny

[–]jthompson68 0 points1 point ago*

My wife makes $26k per year as a 60% FTE teacher in Wisconsin. This is with three years of experience, in one of the richest districts in WI. We can't afford her health insurance, since we'd have to pay 40% plus the 12% the school district normally requires. Despite being only 60% FTE, she works around 34 hours per week, since the district is not required to give her prep time.

We all remember having shitty teachers in school, but that doesn't mean that the vast majority of teachers aren't awesome. And we all know that some teachers make a pretty decent salary, but that doesn't mean that the vast majority don't work way harder than required, or that the benefits aren't deserved.

Maybe I'm biased because of my experiences. If it weren't for one particular teacher I had in elementary school I wouldn't be where I am today. She taught me how to be a decent human being, because my parents were too busy working.

Either way, the fact that this profession has become so politicized is sickening to me. Let teachers teach. Pay enough to attract good teachers, but evaluate and hire based on fair and unbiased performance. Ignore the rhetoric from both sides. It's all common sense, but we've lost that somewhere.

I hate to admit, but you got it right, tumblr. by well_uhh_yeahin funny
