IBM Bladecenter [Rant] by k0rfuin sysadmin

[–]k0rfu[S] 0 points1 point ago

So The solution!!!

After 5 phone techs I finally was able to get someone who REALLY knew pretty much everything about the BladeCenter S. Apparently with our configuration and ONLY with the BladeCenter S for the RAID Controller Subsystem to work you MUST have a Ethernet cable plugged into ports 7 and 14 of the pass through copper module in Slot 1. It can even be a crossover cable between the two ports... I dont get why that would be a requirement but it is, I asked where that is in the documentation and he said you have to work through the compatibility matrix and even then it is hard to find, if it is even there...

Thanks the for the advice. I have done all the firmwares that I can do. The problem right now is that I cannot connect to the RAID controller potion of the I/O module in bay 3 or 4, so I cannot pull the error(s) its throwing, create RAID groups, or even upgrade the firmware. I have done most of what you have suggested, minus checking for a USB stick or pulling CMOS, and everything that IBM suggested. Its to the point I am starting to think we have two bad I/O modules but in reality what is the chances of getting one DOA I/O module, let alone two at once... It is a BladeCenter S by the way.
I left it for the weekend and will start again fresh Monday, the phone support suggested to send out a tech to look at it but my Monday and Tuesday are pretty full so it may get put on the back burner for another couple days. The last thing phone support said is "this shouldnt be happening and we are all stumped..." As an act of desperation I removed all the network attachments and connected my laptop directly to the box and reset all the defaults. After putting in the addressing again it still will only ping/connect to the AMM and SAS Switches but not to the RAID Ctrlr portions. I was hoping the RAID Controller internal VLAN was messing something up because are switches are set to do all VLAN tagging/negotiating and maybe that was messing with it but since that had no effect I am back at stumped.

No one is more aware of this than I am, trust me. My boss and job are great I can spend an entire week just sitting at my desk learning a new technology as long as I clear it with him first and I have yet to have him say no. They also got mad at the department because we didnt take enough classes last year. This month is the end of my first full year at this job and only my second post college job. I dont think I am going anywhere anytime soon.

I just spoke to a new Tech Rep on the phone who gave me some new steps to try. This guy seemed to actually know what he was talking about, he thinks some how the RSSM controllers got set up wrong (which is strange because I havent gotten access to them yet). So I am resetting them and already its fixed on problem. I think our business provider tried to build the system as they think we would use it and attempted to reconfigure it and didnt do it right. 4 of the 5 blades even came with VMWare preinstalled (which i will be reinstalling)

I normally never have a problem with their support, this is a very unique situation with them. Right now the problem is I am stuck at one point, once I get past that point I am fairly confident the rest will fly right by but it is finding out what I am doing wrong that is the issue...

A thousand upvotes for you! That seriously made me laugh out loud so much to the point that my boss came in and said "So its going to badly huh?" because it was an "insane sounding laugh".

Thanks its good to know that i am not the only person who has issues with these things. The support from IBM has been just "try this while you wait for x to come back from [lunch or a call]" I just keep fiddling with the Web UI changing random options and this keeps popping into my head.

Looking for a Windows Server backup solution for a non-profit by johnseekinsin sysadmin

[–]k0rfu 0 points1 point ago

Ditto here. Nonprofit and BE 2010 R3. I will say at times backup exec drives me insane (especially the bad RALUS agent) it is over all a good product and for the price haven't found anything better. My biggest quirks are: 1) As mentioned the RALUS (Unix/Linux/Solaris) agents are dumb and cant adapt to dir changes; if someone renames a directory, even if you have the parent directory selected with all sub folders, it says the job failed because it cant find the one specific folder). Have to go back through and recreate the selection, not a long process just annoying. 2nd the Reporting tools are useless, I gave up on it long ago and just use a ODBC connection and do my reporting outside of Backup Exec.

Edit: Symantec support also blows, they take about 4 hours to call you back after your initial ticket is placed and the tier 1 support you have to start with are morons, from my experience. Once you work your way up the ladder you can get some one not from India, no offense to anyone, who actually knows the software and can help, but that can take several days. Best bet is their community site.

Looking at a used 2001 Golf, looking for info by governator_ahnoldin Volkswagen

I assume this is a 2.0L golf? If so I own one and have had it for over 70,000 miles (now at 120k miles). The old saying treat it right and it will treat you right applies, although who knows how it was treated before you could take ownership. With the changing of oil and simple preventative maintenance I have faired very well with the Golf. The 2.0L is good in the sense that it will last for ever with little maintenance. I have a manual and know VW autotranses can be difficult.

Since I have owned the car the only parts that I have replaced to do breakage (just normal wear): Tie rod (just regular maintenance), Brakes (only once and only pads), Coil pack (was originally finally started acting up at 110k), Plugs/wire (regular maintenance). I am in process of replacing the motor with a VRturbo but not b/c the 2.0 died just want speed, which the 2.0L does not offer. For what its worth this is my car http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6226/6338868867_979ee670ec_z.jpg

The goal was to move all Windows machines from 2000(very few) and 2003 (most) to 2008 this year. I think we only got like 2 migrated. I would say its a mix of 70% Unix/Linux/Solaris and 30% windows (with most being 2003).
We get pretty good deals on some software vendors (amazing deals with Microsoft) because we are a non-for-profit but for some (like splunk) all we get is tax free. Right now it looks like Splunk will be what I take to my boss but its always good to shop around. Ill look into Alienvalt

Anyone got a preferred IPKVM? by bread555in sysadmin

I use these on our network as well. Although we dont use the PDU system we do have them connected with their Command Center unit and it works really well for us.

Command center allows for all ~12 KVMs to be connected to one interface so you dont have to go to the individual KVMs to connect to a machine.

Hey I manage the system this site lives on. I actually was working on it earlier, wonder if the utter slowness of it is because of the Reddit traffic.
