TROPHY CASE

Found an iPad 2 at Goodwill New in Box. 32 gig, wifi for $65. Can't believe it! by djrjrin apple

[–]kordless 4 points5 points ago

Designation as a non-profit and an intent to make money are not related in the United States. Got that from Wikipedia.

The non-profit isn't really owned by any entity other than itself and is usually governed by a board. They can make money, and pay taxes.

Goodwill made $4B last year. The CEO's salary may be high, but he is in charge of a very large organization and his salary is paltry when compared to their revenues.

Anyone else experiencing burn out? Career advice? by cparedesin sysadmin

[–]kordless 1 point2 points ago

Just ask for it. You'll get 2-3 weeks of vacation per year with most startups. Just borrow against it. If they don't let you take it, quit. Life is too short dude. Don't let people abuse your brain.

Transparent Website Monitoring Software by gsp530in sysadmin

[–]kordless 1 point2 points ago

Specifically, run a reverse proxy in verbose mode and stuff all the logs it generates into Splunk. You should then be able to search on user/IP/site given that data is in the event stream.

Remember that you are required by law to protect your employee's/user's privacy, and you should ensure the system you set up for this meets certain guidelines for security.

Be careful. Laws technically state you can monitor an employee's internet usage, but you must do it for valid reasons. Productivity loss is included, but just wanting to know to know is not.

Have an idea, capital but no technical experience, What to do? by Kraxonatorin startups

[–]kordless 0 points1 point ago

What skills do you bring to the table? If you know how to run a business, raise money (or have it), can build a sales team, do the marketing, design, and all the other little BS things that are required to start, promote, and sell a product, then you should just go out and find a technical person to help you.

If you don't do all these other little things, and all you have is an idea and money, you are an investor and should act like one.

I have written a basic chat application using node.js, what do you guys think? by serkanyersenin javascript

[–]kordless 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking the other day that it would be somewhat useful to proxy the chat for SMS users. Give them some way to map their phone number to their chatroom name and forward to them via SMS if they weren't connected.

Can somebody advise me how to resolve this error? by TheDark1in web_design

[–]kordless -1 points0 points ago

Not helpful. A cursory inspection of the DNS records shows that www.yanchengrugby.com is a CNAME of usns12.7itt.com, the same as www.yanchengrugby.com. Also, there is no ftp subdomain on that domain.

The error isn't necessaraly being caused by the credentials. Here's the Microsoft support page for that error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200475

Way to centralize Windows event log viewing? by spiralsmurfin sysadmin

[–]kordless 3 points4 points ago

Use Snare (http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/BackLogNT/) to ship them off to a centralized syslog server you set up or a service like Loggly. Solarwinds also writes a syslog server for Windows, which could be used instead of a Linux based syslog destination.

Doesn't look like it flings things very far. Now if you could have one robot fling another, that would be hot.

+1 Logstash. Logstash is written by Loggly's very own Jordan Sissel. If you need help with it just jump in the #logstash or #loggly channel on IRC.

You can also use Loggly if you are so inclined. Where are your servers located?

No one is stealing my phone, because this is now my permanent wallpaper. by trinitron13in pics

[–]kordless 93 points94 points ago

My son's iPhone was stolen out of his baseball bag in the locker room two years ago when he was a Sophomore. He called me, and I immediately texted the phone a message that said "This is Connor's dad. I have tracked your location down to this spot (pasting in Google Maps link to middle of school) and have called the police and they are on the way now. If you know what's good for you, you'll turn the phone in, or just leave it in a conspicuous place where someone can find it.

Within 10 minutes of the text the phone was turned in "lost" the the main office. Stupid kids.
