Chances of that are pretty short.

People that talk about how much they work all the time annoy me.

It finally happened... an IT urban legend came true. (crosspost from /r/Administrators)

I ran an ISP in Oklahoma City for 8 years. One free perk we provided was that we would 'fix' your Internet connection if you brought your computer in to us. This would serve two purposes: a) it saved us the time we'd spend on the phone with them fixing it remotely, and b) it made the customer feel good about the customer service.

The drawback to this approach was that often times things would happen to the computer immediately after the customer took it home, which would then be perceived as 'our fault'. Occasionally it was our fault, but usually it was something completely unrelated or already existing.

Shortly after one such visit to our office, a customer called us saying she couldn't get the computer to turn on. I asked the obvious, "is it plugged in?" and "is there a lightswitch on this outlet?". After about 5 minutes of me having her poke around, she mentioned it was dark behind her desk and she couldn't see very well. "Can you turn the light on?", I said. "No.", she said, "The power is off in the house!".

Alright Kord Campbell, we know you're on here. Fess up and tell us about this article.

Webstats with django?

kordless 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

We're putting together a hosted solution for this at Loggly, which itself is built with Django and a few other technologies. We'll eventually have some Django code up which you'll be able to use to build this yourself, using us as the storage engine for the log data.

I'll point out that Google Analytics can do some of this stuff, but not all of it. Without the logs, the amount of data they collect is limited to the visitor's browser. Most sites/apps have way more data available in the logs.

Check out Reuben Margolin's stuff: http://www.reubenmargolin.com/. It's similar, but uses a mechanical system to drive the motion.
