Google funds computer teachers and Raspberry Pis in England by cLeaRY101in unitedkingdom

[–]kr239 0 points1 point ago

My school used to teach Pascal and C++, right up until 1997, then it was all Microsoft Office and little else, so the school dropped both GCSE and A Level Computer Science classes as no-one was interested in spending 2 years in front of Powerpoint, Excel and Outlook.

The rest of us at school that were interested were mostly self taught, from either library books, or asking the remaining teachers/6th formers that knew it.

Not much that can be done about the closed source blobs though - Broadcom didn't like releasing even the most basic of chipset information unless you've signed NDA's and the like. More than likely, someone will come along in the next few months and reverse engineer the whole thing.

If i end up having to pay for an account, i'd rather use a credit union, than a bank.

Car Battery Voodoo - Driving me Nuts now! >_< by kr239in cars

Yeah, ground wire from bulkhead to engine got wire wooled, battery clamps and terminals all cleaned - the only one i have yet to do, is the one that attaches to the alternator itself.

Engine is pretty basic, 1390cc 8 valve SOHC EA111 VW lump, MPI fuel injection.

Yeah - both batteries i've had on it are of the fully sealed type, so you cant check the electrolyte, or top it up. I have one arriving on Sunday that i'll try, that's not a sealed one.

If that too has sulphated plates, i have epsom salts, distilled water and 37% sulphuric acid ready for it :)

I suppose i could try one last time with this original battery and as you suggest put it on a low 'normal' charge.

Hard to run the car without the battery though, unlike every other car i've had/worked on, this one has a 4-fuse panel integrated into the (+) terminal, and a metal shield that moulds around the battery itself. Unplug the fuse box, and you'll lose the ignition system straight away. Looks kinda like this, but shifted over to the positive terminal:

Except the parasitic drain when it's not doing anything but sitting there, is a mere 0.02 amps, and a maximum of 0.9 amps if i leave the door open.

Battery was charged with a 12v fast charger. It has a 'normal' mode, but no idea what the current is in either mode. If the alternator is charging properly, then why is it that when i stop the car after a 10 mile trip (varying engine speed between 1800 and 3500rpm most of the time), you try and start the engine and it behaves like a dead battery? The starter could be a problem, granted, but it sounds more like either crap battery, or alternator :/

I'll check/clean the alternator (+) connection tomorrow, when it's light, see if it makes any difference at all.

Bullshit, rigged, pile of crap 'experiment'. Had to cheat in order to get the desired result, no doubt paid off by Renault to do it...

Then why does the output keep dropping by 0.1v every minute? I did just check to see if it was still playing silly buggers, and it is. Hit 13.2v and just kept slowly dropping. Revving it stabilised it, never increased the voltage output. So either i have bad connection somewhere, the battery itself has a bad cell, or the regulator on the alternator is toast...or maybe the diode pack?

Just checked the current drain... a mere 0.02amps (radio memory). Even with the door open and the interior lights/door puddle lights, it registers only 0.9 amp - pretty glad there's no drain!

Looks like it may be the alternator...you start the car, and the voltage slowly drops by 0.1v per minute - 14.5 to start with...then 14.4...14.3...14.2 - unless you give it some revs, but then the voltage doesn't increase, it just stays stable at the voltage. If you come off the throttle though, it spikes by 0.1v and then starts dropping slowly again.

Red or Blue, it's not the state, its the religious right that's the problem.

Honda Driver was taken to hospital with concussion, in a neck brace & facial bruising.

Wishy Washy? If you want more pictures of the accident, i'll provide them. You can see the results for yourself. I trust my eyes, and the fact i know the driver myself. I think the build thread for the car is still on the forum, i know the owner is still around.

No - instead you get an explosive charge detonating and causing massive facial bruising & concussion.

Volvo 700/900 = Safe. Mercedes W123/W124 = Safe. BMW E30/E24/E28 = Safe. Lexus LS400/GS300/SC400 = Safe.

All are at least 20+ year old designs, which stand up to a damn sight more hammering than any airbag filled pile of plastic shit on 4 wheels that seems to pass for a car these days.

The only thing that's built harder than them, is the Nokia 3210.

Am i driving a 40 year old car? No. I am driving a 22 year old car though. One that you've likely never heard of, driven or have any clue as to how it performs in a crash against anything else. I, on the other hand, have first hand experience of driving this car, and have seen more than a few people with the same one in accidents where they came away mostly unscathed, repaired the damage and left the other driver with a written off pile of crap.

Modern regulations aren't always about protecting the passengers, but passing some test to get a certain rating.

Here's one after being hit at a 45' angle at 60mph:

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n267/justanothervictim/Frontright.jpg

Driver was uninjured aside from smacking his head against the A-pillar. He walked away, no need for an ambulance. As for the car, the Engine fired up and it drove onto a trailer fine. It was repaired over a three week period for less than $500, and is still out there. Suspension Geometry is all a-ok, inner wings & body are still straight.

The 2004 Honda Accord that ploughed into it (driver was too busy talking on the phone) was a total write off thanks to it's "crumple zones".

I think i'll stick with my 22 year old car, thanks.

Well, i tell you what - lets take my car, and yours, and put them in a head on collision; i'll drive away at the end of it with a bump on the head, and leave you at the roadside crumpled into your modern soulless shitbox while your broken body awaits the arrival of the fire brigade to set you free.
