Instead, imgur runs ads against everything you post unless you link to the i.imgur.com URL. (That was done here, but as I type the imgur links in /r/chicago are to imgurcom, vs. six to i.imgur.com.) So you're not "stealing" bandwidth, but you're giving the image to another company to earn revenue from.

In either case, unless the image goes big on the reddit front page, the cost of bandwidth or the advertising profit is vanishingly small.

Edited to add: The best scenario in this and almost every case would be to link to the image in its original context.

You're seriously worried about the Tribune's bandwidth? Sorry, but this isn't some kid's free wordpress blog. They've got plenty of "bandwidth," linking here isn't going to cause them to go over their limit.

This happens a lot, and it pisses me off. I can't count the number of photos I see uploaded to imgur instead of directly linked -- even just lifted off of other image services, like flickr. WTF is the point of that?

Just tuned in to Q101 on 1530am for a couple minutes in the car. It sounded like they were playing music through the microphones in the Wrigley Field press booth in 1948 -- muffled, staticky, I honestly couldn't tell you what song was playing it was so bad.

It's an arts and culture festival put on the folks behind Lumpen, Co-Prosperity Sphere, MDW Fair, Maria's Packaged Goods & Community Bar and a whole lot of other artsy stuff. In the past it's been held at the MCA and other higher profile spots, but they've decided to focus on the whole neighborhood of Bridgeport, which has been quietly on the rise for a couple of years now in terms of cultural attractions.
