TROPHY CASE

My back was on fire... by dominicaldazein DIY

[–]mntgoat 4 points5 points ago

I've heard and seen this happen before. We did our deck with a pressure washer and some liquid for decks. We made sure to use the deck tip. The only times the deck got damaged was when we got too close. Other than that it worked great. Here is a pic while doing it http://i.imgur.com/dZFQJ.jpg

I used to have a ragdoll kitty and he looked just like that.

They did a fantastic Copa Sudamericana and I'm guessing they will go far in Copa Libertadores.

Help with my Avocado tree? What does it need? Link inside by g-e-o-f-fin gardening

[–]mntgoat 4 points5 points ago

My parents have an avocado farm, asked my mom.

Some fungus can cause that.

Recently transplanted trees can also have that problem. They always cut leaves in half before planting.

It is probably not too much water because the leaves aren't droopy. But lots of water could be helping fungus grow.

Could it have been hit by cold temperatures?

BTW all these points come from someone farming avocados in South America. California might be totally different.

Trying to connect a wireless phone to Windows 7 vmware Workstation 8 via wifi tether. Which one do I choose? by brisketxin vmware

[–]mntgoat 0 points1 point ago

If you have wifi tethered internet on your host then just choose NAT or bridged and it should work.

You might have to choose your bridged adapter if that isn't configured to automatic.

Wichita, Kansas appears to have been just hit by a large tornado. by chakalakaspin news

Harry and Webb got hit pretty hard. Not sure how close your condo is? However the house we used to live at is on that corner and there is no damage to it. Some tree damage on the street but not to the house.

I want to get myself a kitty but I'm not sure if I can afford to take care of it, how expensive are they to take care of? by bbchanin self

[–]mntgoat 0 points1 point ago

Be careful with what breed you get. At least I've been told that overbreeding is what makes some cats unhealthy. Males can get urinary tract infections, if they get too many you will be looking at a pretty expensive surgery.

I have friends with cats who spend less than $100 a year on vet visits, whereas my cat had had 3 major surgeries and will be going in to get one of his teeth taken out on Monday.

Other than vet costs, they are awesome pets.

A few of us got together under the new billboard in Wichita, ks. Happy Easter! by meganahsin atheism

[–]mntgoat 1 point2 points ago

I don't think it is about bringing atheist together, it is more about letting us know that even though we live in Wichita we don't have to be as scared as we are because we are atheist. At least that's my take on it.

Well, that's pretty clear. by uptwolaitin pics

I almost hit an airplane with my car at a fly in restaurant in Beaumont, KS.

I turned the corner only to find a plane pulling out of its parking spot.

This was probably just a googled image but one of my friends who had a Darwin fish had his fish vandalized a couple of times. We are in Kansas though, so that should be expected.

No I was talking about Olde English Manor. I have no idea about pricing but they used to be alright.

It has been a while since I lived at one of the varsity places. It was the one on 16th, not the one on Gentry that I lived at. Honestly, as a student I didn't give a crap about it being a shitty place. It was cheap and because I paid my rent ahead of time the owner actually repaired stuff for me when it broke. I had a friend though who didn't have such luck and had his AC broken for pretty much the whole summer. As long as the air was blowing semi cold the guy wouldn't replace it. The 16th varsity was a million times better than the Gentry one as far as I could tell but it is still just a dump.

Most things between 16th and 17th right near campus are owned by the same guy.

At $600 you could find a lot better places though, check out sommerset (they used to have cheap large bedrooms), tall oaks, or that other place on woodlawn and 21st.

Does anyone have any experience with concrete floors? I want to have them in my house and wanted some input.. by uatwin InteriorDesign

[–]mntgoat 1 point2 points ago

We did floors like that in our basement. Similar color actually. The concrete was fairly new but we still had to clean and polish the crap out of it before doing the acid stain. Then you clean the left over stuff from the acid as much as possible. Then we put a acrylic on top to seal it. We weren't happy with the final result so we waxed it recently. Between all these steps there was a lot of cleaning.

I don't know if we will be happy with them yet. They are certainly hard and cold but we put pipes inside the concrete to heat it up during construction so hopefully that will help. The main reason we went with concrete is because we live out in the country and we have pets, so mud is always coming into our house. The main floor is tile and hardwood which has been pretty easy to clean mud from.

If you haven't poured the concrete yet I recommend you make the concrete guy make a lot of concrete joins (I think that is what they are called), make them on some cool pattern or something. It will help with cracking and it can also give the floor a cool look.

Meeting my daughter's boyfriend for the first time today. Hard to resist the urge to mess with him a little. Any suggestions? by AMcNairin AskReddit

[–]mntgoat 1 point2 points ago

The second or third time I met my father in law I walked in to my then girlfriend's apartment and found him sharpening a big knife. He stopped, shook my hand, and continued.

We get along great but I really think he was trying to make a point then, even though he denies it.

Samsung is now calling the reported ICS release on Saturday a "mistake". No release date has been determined. by soldierbluein Android

[–]mntgoat 7 points8 points ago

Sure, that is true. There have been some bugs on first models of iPhones but is not like the Galaxy Nexus hasn't had tons of problems too. No one can beat Apple at marketing and release dates and keeping models secret are some of the key parts of their marketing.

[–]mntgoat 16 points17 points ago

Can't upvote this enough. Think of when the Galaxy Nexus was announced. There was no set date of release, and then the leaked dates kept on changing. Apple would have given an exact date and they would have released it on that date.

Visiting Wichita by CowboyMouthin wichita

[–]mntgoat 4 points5 points ago*

I am not originally from Wichita so I have to take family around every time they come to visit. The best places are:

Cosmosphere and Salt mines in Hutchinson (less than an hour away).

In Wichita, cow town is interesting, botanica is pretty when there are flowers (they are starting now I think).

There is a world treasures museum or something like that.

A somewhat interesting place to go at night is the chuck wagon dinner.

Exploration place is nice for kids but I don't know at that age. They often have some sort of big display going on, those are usually good.

Aside from that, you have the movie theaters which are pretty good, the one in downtown is a bit of a cool experience cause you get to order food while watching the movie.

As far as food, it really depends on your taste, Wichita has great food, from burgers to arabic food, indian food, etc.

One of my the favorites for both sides of our family is Bella Luna. They have a mix of things. I haven't had a dish there yet I didn't like.

For sandwiches some good places are La Gallete (get the croisant), The Artichoke.

For burgers, TY's is awesome, Bionic Burger is great (might have to ask for crispy fries), I've heard TJs is good. The best burger by far is Bomber Burger on the south side, it is hard to find them open though and it is a bit of a scary place. The anchor has good burgers too.

For bbq, everyone I know likes some place different, pig in pig out is alright, hog wild is not bad. Two brothers is alright too but every location seems different. I really like B&C creations, and it is a bit of a weird place, kind of hidden. Delano bbq is fairly good. I've heard there is an old fire station that has great bbq but I have no idea where it is.

And there are of course tons of other places. Jimmies is an old style diner, supposedly owned by the guys who created White Castle. They have great shakes and fairly good burgers. Passage to Inidia is a place I like at dinner, it is indian food so it can be pretty spicy. Sweet basil is a nice sort of italian buffet at lunch. Sumo is a cool japanese place where they cook in front of you (can get pricy). Thai Tradition is good. Il Viccino has good pizza.

I'm assuming you are heading out on 135? you can check out Lindsborg, it is a swedish town. When you hit salina if you go the wrong direction for a bit you can get to Abilene where they have a Russel Stover chocolate outlet, and the Eisenhower museum. After that I don't know much.

If you tell me which highway you are coming down through I might be able to give you other places to stop by.

Hope that helps, and enjoy Wichita.

EDIT: someone on another commented on the zoo, it is pretty good for the city size. But if you get a chance the Omaha zoo is just amazing.

Is it true that Americans get a measly 2 weeks annual leave? If true, how does this affect the nation? by AnInchOfCredibilityin AskReddit

[–]mntgoat 0 points1 point ago

I keep seeing comments about "getting paid to take a vacation", I hope you guys realize vacation comes out of your salary. Every time I've seen someone calculate how much they are going to pay someone they do:

cost to hire = offered salary+insurance+vacation+other benefits

I've even seen bonuses added into it so basically your bonus is already determined when your salary is stablished.

I know someone who gave his employees the choice to have vacation, xmas bonus, etc, all based on a % of the hourly rate.

I do hourly consulting and calculate my yearly rate as hourly rate * 2000 giving me 80 hours of vacations.

I'm not American but I have lived in the US almost as long as I lived in my home country, which has tons of vacations. The cultures are so different it is difficult to blame it all just on vacation time. I guess I've been lucky in the US, I've usually had pretty relaxed work with plenty of vacation but I do see how other people struggle and are always at 0 days of vacation or half a day or something like that.

As for political reasons, having the government force vacation time on businesses would be a huge deal, probably as big a fight as healthcare was. It is kind of funny but I bet the people who would benefit from having the vacation would be the first ones calling the government communist if they tried to set some sort of forced vacation time.
