How To Win With Suited Connectors by CardCounter0in poker

[–]mpeters 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, he seems to be confusing winning a hand with winning money. If you keep score by the number of hands you've won, then yes SC's will be a loser. But that's not how we keep score in poker :)

Larry Wall, primary author of Perl, on productizing Perl 6 by raiphin perl

[–]mpeters 2 points3 points ago

PCRE is not "the old regex engine". It's a separate library that mimics Perl's regexes (but not completely) for use in other projects that want to emulate Perl's regexes.

Larry Wall, primary author of Perl, on productizing Perl 6 by raiphin perl

[–]mpeters 5 points6 points ago

You're confusing parrot with Perl6. And Perl6 doesn't want to do pthreads. Those are the old paradigm and are frankly too hard for most programmers to do with more just just some trivial cases. Perl6 is looking at pushing the envelope along the path that other languages like Erlang have done.

It's more than just giving access to POSIX primatives, it's about making it mostly invisible (like say running map in parallel with trivial syntax) and about making it work with 1000 cores, which is the future.

These aren't easy problems and if you think they are, then you don't really understand them.

[–]mpeters 0 points1 point ago

It is negative if you look at per-capita spending, which the article mentions. The nation is getting larger, and thus the spending will also increase. But if it's the same (or lower) per-capita spending then how can you claim it's just a "slower rate"?

Obama spending binge never happened - Rex Nutting - MarketWatch by ashumanin Economics

[–]mpeters 0 points1 point ago

His spending per-capita has gone down. That's the point and to be honest the only real metric I think that counts for government spending.

As the nation gets larger we're going to spend more and anyone who doesn't see that is wearing some funny glasses :)

And it doesn't mean a lot unless you compare it other languages since it could be an industry slowing of employment (which given the state of the economy wouldn't be a surprise).

If the federal government is giving money to those states so that they can pay for these things how can you say the states are "fiscally responsible"? In fact, try looking at those state budgets and the deficits they are currently running even with the help from the federal government.

It's fine to believe that people and government should do different things. But Ayn Rand's philosophy wasn't just about government it was about your personal life as well. But as far as having 2 different "philosophies", as Jesus said can you reall serve God and Mammon?

They said they were using hashes but it's md5 which can be broken. Especially since they could prioritize users with known accounts elsewhere. It's not five minutes, but with some video cards doing the work it's probably a few days (all 9 character passwords can have their md5 sums created in just 10 days with commodity hardware) - http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/04/speed-hashing.html

Getting a Perl error when attempting to update with apt-get. by thebottonlinein perl

[–]mpeters -1 points0 points ago

For future reference, questions like this are better asked on stackoverflow.com since it's a dedicated Q&A site, gets more eyeballs than /r/perl and you can post something with multiple tags (in this case "perl" and "ubuntu") so that multiple communities can help out.

In this particular case, I'd check to see if for some reason strict.pm was put into another package. Some distributions try to make the core perl package as small as possible, even moving core essential modules into a different package.

Collusion... or was the guy asking for it? by wet_carrotin poker

[–]mpeters 6 points7 points ago

It doesn't need to be secret to be collusion. But it does need to be an agreement. If everyone arrives at the same strategy themselves without anything being spoken or planned, then it's ok.

Collusion... or was the guy asking for it? by wet_carrotin poker

[–]mpeters 0 points1 point ago

It's only collusion if you talk about it. If you all realize that his blinds are free for the taking and in it's in your best interest to fold quickly and take as many of his blinds as you can, then that's not collusion. It's just good strategy.

Baltimore man beaten, stripped down. Why isn't this a race issue? But the other way is? by dorkimoein news

[–]mpeters 0 points1 point ago

No, it's in no way a thoughtcrime. The crime is still the same, whether or not they are guilty is not effected by their thoughts. The difference is the sentencing. Hate crime legislation doesn't change something that wasn't a crime into a crime, it changes the sentencing of the already proven crime based on the intent of the person (which we've already established is being used in lots of other ways).

1st, 2nd and 3rd degree murders are all intentional, so it really is about the why. And no, it's not thoughtcrime, it's a real crime not just something they thought about.

Then convert your gold into dollars to pay your taxes.

This is a silly argument. A chicken farmer shouldn't be able to pay their taxes in chickens. Convert your assets into the common medium and then pay with the common medium. It's not the IRS's obligation to know the exact market price for chickens at any given time. And if you fear inflation, keep your wealth in chickens for as long as you want, just converting to dollars at the last minute.

[–]mpeters 9 points10 points ago

We consider motive all the time in crimes and it definitely changes the degree of punishment. Killing someone out of passion is not the same as killing someone for pre-meditated greed. And we as a society have decided that an attack against someone because of their race, religion, gender, etc is worse than attacking someone for their money.

More accurate rule of 2/4? by Clairvoyanttruthin poker

[–]mpeters 6 points7 points ago

Also note that the rule of 2/4 is the odds of you hitting your outs. Not the odds of you winning. So in the above example the odds of you winning need to take into account the odds of him hitting another A (against your TTT or TTJJ).
