Is America a Christian Nation? Many believers say so, but many supported cases here would lead one to a very different conclusion. by DistortedSkiesin Freethought

[–]mtkz 2 points3 points ago

Science does not prove anything. It only supports theories.

This is correct and is not contradictory to what I said. I fully agree with you on absolutely every part of your post. All I was saying is that it's foolish to say that we've proven that a god does not exist beyond all reasonable doubt, because we haven't. We just have better evidence supporting that a god doesn't exist.

Hundreds of years of knowledge and experimentation has proven (beyond all reasonable doubt) that no, god does not exist.

Are you sure about that? I haven't seen a single academic paper disproving the existence of any god. I think a better qualified statement is that there hasn't been any hard evidence supporting the existence of a god. From a scientific perspective, we don't really know if a god exists or doesn't exist. Based on all the evidence we have, the "god hypothesis" seems less likely than other explanations because of the lack of evidence, but it's wrong to outright dismiss the existence of a god if you want to be all scientific about it.

tl;dr: Saying "God doesn't exist, and I'm sure of it" is (almost) as much of a leap of faith as saying "God exists and I'm sure of it" given the lack of good evidence.

Edit: Now, the right approach might be to say "Based on the evidence we've seen so far, it seems much more likely that a god does not exist." Do you see how "beyond all reasonable doubt" might be a bit too strong of a claim to make?

GF found porn... Storm Ensues. Read for context. by shael_atin relationships

As I guy, I don't think there was any overreaction here—there was a clear rule established, and he broke it, causing a breach of trust. Cheating is defined by the couple, and depending on the conditions of the relationship, this could be seen as cheating. It sounds like there's plenty of communication. The OP was at fault, but neither of them are the problem—it just sounds like they don't agree on this one issue. If it's irrevocable, then this will be a tough relationship. If they can settle their differences through compromise and maintain trust, that's the best outcome.

[–]mtkz 55 points56 points ago

It doesn't matter how irrational she is if he agreed. The problem here isn't porn, it's trust.

OP, you're guilty, and you should apologize. It sounds like you understand this. You should let it cool a bit, and then start discussing how you two can come to an agreeable compromise about where the limits on porn should be. Try to not see her view as wrong—instead, try to understand her reasoning. Maybe you can alleviate some of her concerns about porn. Try to reassure her that it's not out of displeasure with her, that it's an important issue to you, and if it's significant enough to make or break a good relationship, let her know.

If you can't come to a good agreement, try considering if this is a large enough issue to cause serious unhappiness down the line. If it is, quit now. I certainly hope that's not the case, but sometimes people are just too different to change for one another.

If they aren't all implemented, it ain't Marxism.

Now, I'll admit, there's a problem, but Marxism isn't it.

Edit: Just so you know, I didn't downvote you. Interesting view with a source, worthwhile content for a discussion, so no hard feelings. I just disagree with you and I'm wasn't sure if you were just trying to troll.

Not going to waste too much time here on a troll, but I only need to disprove one point to break your argument.

"Abolition of all rights of inheritance" - Nope, still have inheritance. Any partial restriction on inheritance is not on par with abolition of all rights.

As far as I can see, most of the points are like this; supported by examples of partial restrictions and regulations, but nowhere near full agreement with the planks. While any system of government may manifest in similar ways to Marxism, that doesn't mean it's Marxist, and I'd say that it's extremely evident that the US is far from Marxist considering that we still have private property.

Please cut the conspiracy crap.

Dude, calm down, you're over-thinking stuff. "Let's not do something which may amount to mankind's greatest achievement because we might fail and end up nowhere." I have nothing against you, but I don't understand how so many people can think this way.

Fuck romanticism and all that shit—we've been to the moon, do you understand how significant of an undertaking that is?

"The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision."

How do trees grow in such a way as to not fall over? by mtkzin askscience

Thank you, this was actually what I was looking for. I understand that roots play a role, but trees are still pretty well balanced. If you've ever seen a tree with missing branches on one side, you'd have probably noticed that it was leaning. While roots keep it from falling over, I felt like there had to be something else at play. Looks like this explains it.

Dear Mr. Hah Look At This Guy What A Fucktard He Doesn't Know Shit I'm So Great Because I Post Blogospam All Day Here And I'm Seriously Butthurt By Women,

I'll gladly admit that I'm haven't read pages and pages of the highly informative content on your blog, and like many other redditors, I came here to learn more about the issues surrounding men's rights. I've been reading through this subreddit over the past few months, and I thought I'd give it a chance despite all the shit I'd heard about it.

When I stumble across the crap like this that you post from your blog far too often, I don't learn anything, and all I see is a complete refusal to discuss the issues in a civilized manner. Take a look at some other posts on this page if you want to see an example of what I'm talking about.

The only thing I asked of you was to explain how the article you posted is relevant to men's rights—which you still haven't done. Instead you began taking low shots with your politely worded but condescending tone.

I understand that your idea of what the MRM should be is very different than mine, but name calling doesn't help anyone and honestly it makes you look immature. I attacked your article, but I haven't attacked you personally until now.

It looks like this isn't the place for me or anyone else new to any of these issues. It was a fun 4 months, I'll miss you all very dearly, but fuck it, I'm out. I'm going to go chill in the much more welcoming and open-minded /r/OneY. I'll be sure to recommend this subreddit most highly to everyone I know.

Yours truly, A narcissistic pig moron and ignoramus

tl;dr: I ain't coming back.

Edit: On second thought, maybe I should find some people who don't completely despise others who disagree with them, can discuss sensitive issues such as gender disparities with an open mind, and don't resort to name calling to keep themselves above others, and start a new subreddit which can actually work with the other side to do something besides circlejerking and whining.

What I meant is that its main purpose is not to attack feminism, but rather to assert equal rights for men. I'm aware that attacks against feminism happen here, but that's not what the end goal of this subreddit is. In this case, I can't see why it's necessary to attack feminism.

SlutWalks: Stupidity in a Tube Top by avoiceformenin MensRights

And what does this article have to do with any of that? It's a poorly written, useless bashing of some completely harmless demonstration that isn't even supported by many mainstream feminist organizations. The SlutWalks demonstrations pose absolutely no threat to MensRights. As I said:

I don't see what's wrong with it as long as men's rights are also respected.

This whole discussion reeks of "Oh, we're better because we don't have silly demonstrations," and it seems pretty childish to me. Yes, there are cases where there will be a conflict of interest, and we will have to compromise with the feminist establishment on those issues in order to get the most egalitarian outcome, but this isn't one of those cases.

There's no fucking conspiracy, they're not out to get you in your sleep, so take your tinfoil hat off, put your shotgun down, and learn to solve issues instead of creating new ones. This isn't about making the other side lose, but about having both sides win. We're not playing a zero sum game here, and I'm certainly not the first to point this out. There's a lot of passion in this subreddit, but much of it is misdirected in a negative way. As a pretty average person, I'm sorry to say, but your attitude isn't helping me to your side. I'm a guy and I want my rights, but you're being pretty damn alienating with your closed-minded one-dimensional views.

I appreciate the evidence in your last post, and I found it much more helpful than the SlutWalks article. You should've posted that instead, as it brought to my attention an interesting issue of which I was unaware. Your attitude is still disconcerting, but at least there's some substance to the argument.

A lot of people, especially those just dipping their toes into the men's rights arena, or those who are just spectators, might be asking the same question. And let me politely suggest that in a growing and diverse movement, you are not qualified to say what is and isn't relevant. I know I'm not qualified and I have been at this for 25 years.

I didn't say it's irrelevant, I asked someone to explain to me how it's relevant. You didn't do that.

I am in full support of equal rights, and I think that when we try to give more rights to a group of people in order to create a more level playing field, we often ignore the other side. This is why I support this subreddit.

That doesn't mean I can't support both sides. I find it foolish that so many people on this subreddit don't understand that there is no war here. There exists a common goal, and stuff like this doesn't help achieve it. I disagree with silly mock feminism as much as the next person here, but this isn't a productive way to deal with it.

I'm very well aware of the sidebar, and I think it's a poor reflection of what I read 90% of the time on this subreddit. I seriously doubt most of the readers believe in that conspiracy theory.

I respect your opinion, but personally I feel that you should reconsider your hatred towards feminism. I don't see what's wrong with it as long as men's rights are also respected.

tl;dr: We're here to help men get equal rights, and this isn't doing that.

I don't understand how this blog post is relevant to men's rights. This subreddit isn't for attacking feminism, but for asserting equal rights. False rape accusations and child custody issues are of concern, but shit like this isn't. It also gives us a bad image.

Numbers wouldn't add anything—the concept is what matters, because it will always produce a similar result. Think of it like subtracting a larger number from a smaller number—you know it's going to be negative even if you don't know the numbers. Same idea applies here.
