As much as I hope everyone was okay, damn the sound of that impact was a satisfying crunch.

Has anyone ever tried to kill themselves in an LD? by secretlypoopingin LucidDreaming

[–]notalwayshere 2 points3 points ago

Not directly related, but I once had a dream (more of a nightmare) where I wasn't lucid but was in a life or death situation. Up until that point I had generally thought I was fairly accepting of death and would handle a war situation fairly well.

My scenario was more or less that I was in a ditch and caught in the crossfire of some random urban terrorist war. My significant other was not in the ditch and in very real danger of being killed. As much as I loved her and wanted to pull her to safety, my fear of dying from the bullet whizzing very close by overwhelmed me and I found myself reduced to a quivering mess, torn between saving her and risking my own life.

I woke up realising that because it all felt real to me, in reality I probably would have responded the same way and didn't really have the courage I thought I did. In a ways, I learnt more about myself than I could have if I'd been "awake" in my dream.

Question about getting paid for bug/exploit by netsecquestionin netsec

[–]notalwayshere 2 points3 points ago

In Australia, we have enough issues with ethical hackers alerting companies about bugs for free. A few months back, a chap alerted a company that it was vulnerable to attack and as a reward the company set the police on him.

A lot of the infosec guys I talk to who do this for a living have told me that they've pretty much given up trying to do the good-will thing of informing companies when they find/stumble into glaring vulnerabilities outside of work because most of the times the company doesn't want to know (because they'll have to fix it), threatens to sue or report them to the police, or they view it as an attempt to sell their services.

You're probably trying to do the right thing, but at least in Australia, the law doesn't discriminate against whether what you intended to do was right or wrong. Complicating things with money just makes things worse.

** tl;dr: Even if you mean well, a lot of companies will see it as extortion. It's not worth the trouble. **

Will I ever enjoy exercise? by jesus_sausagein Fitness

[–]notalwayshere 12 points13 points ago

I never thought I'd enjoy lifting. In fact, for a while I thought it was the dumbest thing ever — why pay to move heavy shit around?

Fast forward to today and I'm still not a stunning example of raw masculine strength, but I'm addicted to lifting weights. Going into the gym most days and achieving more than you've been able to do is a huge confidence booster.

You look better, you feel better, your posture improves, you stand taller, you begin to fit out your clothes better. And I wouldn't even say I'm in shape yet.

Hell, even when I'm not at the gym I sometimes feel the urge to just lift heavy shit up.

You're going to find it uncomfortable at first, but stick with it. Even when I'm in the middle of a set I sometimes question what the hell I'm putting myself through, but when I'm re-racking the iron after achieving a new personal best, I'm beaming, I'm smiling, I'm on top of the world. That's what will keep you coming back for more.

Will you enjoy exercise — the physical act of doing it? Quite possibly not, but the immense benefits that it brings? Watching yourself turn into a badass is thoroughly enjoyable.

tl;dr: You might not enjoy doing it, but you'll love what it does to you. Also, orangutan.

Have you ever had a random thought of something happening, right before it did? What was it? by swayzeeein AskReddit

[–]notalwayshere 0 points1 point ago

I used to regularly day dream in class about nothing in particular then something would happen very shortly after that was exactly the same as what I'd been thinking about. However, because I only ever realised after the fact, I always put it down as deja vu or that I had only imagined previously seeing it.

It was also never helpful since they almost always were of some random short event and I had no control over it whatsoever. Realising you've apparently seen something that is going to happen only after actually happens is of no benefit and only really weirds you out. I've noticed it's decreased in frequency as I've gotten older though.

Never told anyone this, because naturally everyone just thinks you're insane.

I was under the impression MITB attacks could be mitigated by verifying the transaction in a channel outside of the browser, such as via an SMS? Such tech has been around (relatively cheaply, I suspect too) for ages. Is this flawed, or is there some other reason they don't implement this?

(I'm not having a go at your credentials, by the way, I just genuinely want to learn.)

One of the guys involved in your Oauth implementation said the company was working on something to replace the open sesame login experiment that was closed recently.

Any idea what's coming?

Do you use Google+ yourself? Were you encouraged or pressured to use it at all?

Do you frequent lists like full disclosure to get ahead on what vulnerabilities may be applicable to you? What other sources do you go to for "inspiration"?

Would you say Google is more proactive or reactive in finding vulnerabilities? What sort of resources have they dedicated to penetration testing and vulnerability detection?

There are 100,000+ r/fitness readers, at least 1 of you has to be someone who feels they don't have to re-rack their weights... by El_Duderenoin Fitness

[–]notalwayshere 1 point2 points ago

I re-rack everything except the leg press when I use it. For that I leave a plate on it.

I've never seen anyone use it with anything less than a plate, so I figure leaving one on there will save the majority of people from having to do it themselves rather than waste almost everyone's time.

How do Sydney redditors organise themselves? by cantfeelmylegsin sydney

Take a read of David Allen's Getting Things Done.

In a nutshell, it's all about finding ways to collect all your thoughts and crap in your head that worry and stress you out, organising it and then doing it all.

Win+Pause brings up system properties and quick access to device manager.

Google's public DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Alt+Space, hitting M, then tapping a directional key will snap the current window to your cursor location when you move it. Useful when you have a window that has mysteriously vanished off the screen.

Shift-Esc in Chrome brings up its internal task manager.

Ctrl-Shift-Esc brings up the Windows task manager (in Vista and above I think? Otherwise go with the Alt-Ctrl-Del).

Holding Ctrl while in the Windows task manager pauses the Processes window from updating.

After hitting Ctrl-F to search, Ctrl-G takes you to the next matched term.

RES has a crapload of shortcuts that I didn't even realise existed until my mouse ran out of batteries the other day. Hit Shift-/ to view.

I second this. We're really good at making up excuses for not doing things or overthinking everything. I can say that some of the best things I've done have been because I've thrown myself into them without worrying myself about the what-ifs.

You already know the overall outcome is going to be good, so don't sweat it over the small stuff like what you're going to say or do. Just walk in there like a boss and let it play out naturally. Good luck!
