I intentionally didn't click that link, but I learned it anyways. I keep loading new reddits and keep seeing it and I think, "yeah, I know that now...". Ahh!

I will always go indirect and clip in to that. If your climber gets hurt, it amazing how much of a difference it will make being able to unclip rather than having to consider making a haul system to free yourself from your belay loop. Wih or without a redirect you need to be mindful of where your break will be on any device (up or Down).

It's worth considering the rescue system that would be needed before setting up any belay. For that reason I'll never use a reverso in 'auto-lock' mode (even if the new ones are better). It was after taking a cliff rescue course that I started using a grigri religiously (and I carry pulleys).

Another advantage of this method is that the second gets to see the protection being used. If its an experienced leader and less experienced second then the second gets to see good real life placement of trad gear. If both are experienced then the second can check that their climbing partner is making secure enough placements to make them comfortable with the level of risk being taken.

It hasn't been mentioned, but having the second clean leaves the protection in place to protectoyota climber. If a route traverses or overhangs you'd like that rope attached to the wall along the way to lessen the effects of a swing if the second falls on top rope. A good leader will consider this and will leave protection AFTER a big move or during a traverse (it might not be necessary for the leader who clipped before the big move and thus securing their own safety, but the second - often weaker - climber just unclipped before that big move!)

I agree with the top paragraph, he either wanted to start out as fwb or along the way he developed feelings for you. It's cool to have Feb and it can work but only if you're on the same page. You'll need to give this guy up.

Feel free to find another though, there's no shame in that.

Is there any material so soft that humans could routinely survive falling into a large pile of it at terminal velocity? by meelarin askscience

I'm not going to downvote, but instead I'll give you some extra reading. I believe you're reading 'terminal velocity' as the speed it takes to terminate your life. It's not.

My two very good friends dropped acid and went downtown. One forgot how to speak English but noticed these weird alien-like creatures trying to communicate with him. He didn't know their language but recognized from their shiny adornments that they were important in their communities. Rather than insult these creatures he showed kindness by repeating their strange sounds back to them.

My other friend handled the situation and got the nice officers to let them go home.

Not starting a rivalry, but I saw a red Ferrari 599 here on Sunday!

Reddit, my boyfriend is overweight. How can I approach him about getting into shape, without making him feel bad? by Trash_Redditin AskReddit

[–]notquiteworking 0 points1 point ago

Does he know that his BMI of 33 makes him certifiably obese? He likely doesn't see it that way. Find a way to remind him that obese people die early, and that that you don't want that.

A trip to a doctor, dietician and a trainer are worthwhile.

Beaking: like a birds beak, she started running her mouth at the guys. We all knew they were assholes but until they were publicly called racist they might have just walked off instead of getting punchy.

On new years several years back I was with my friends and this white girl who was a perfect ten walked by with her short brown boyfriend. These Giant white dudes took exception to it and started making racist and threatening comments . At 160lbs, well spoken and white I decided I owed this 120lb dude a hand before a hate crime was unleashed and so I stepped between them and tried to de-escalate things.

Well, the girl is pissed but since the situation is 'under control' (me standing between her and 700plus pounds of three meatheads) she starts beaking! Well I get punched out.

I learned a bunch of lessons: she was a bitch, that I'd do something like that, that I can talk down only so many fights before getting hit and lastly, punches fly FAST!

I was 15 on a public bus sitting down next to a window. There was this punk about my age in the row ahead of me and his buddy sitting accross the aisle. In front of the punk is the sweetest little old lady with her hair up and a silk scarf covering her hair and hanging down the back of her head where it lay on the steel rail of her seat near her neck. very classy.

The punk put his finger on the scarf pulling it down away from the lady's forehead gently. She pulled it up not realizing why it was falling and he did it again. Three times.

I was furious that it happened and angry that I couldn't do anything for my size and my age. A forty year old stout man in a leather jacket with shaved head walked up, sat down next to the kid and leaned into him hard pinning the kid against the glass: not violent or painful but dominating.

From two feet away I couldnt hear what was said but when freed the two punks got off the bus running and they actually looked sad (and scared). I thanked that man and made it my commitment to stand up for people and help in the future.

That was over ten years ago and I'm a little teary thinking about how angry I was and also how my faith in humanity was shaken and easily restored. That woman never knew what happened.

I guess you could, I've never seen it... On the one hand, a short QuickDraw would pull your rope to the side making things uncomfortable and a long runner might slip over your knee tripping you. The other thing is that in a fall you would likely rip your gear loop and if you didn't (because you've got a metolius safety harness for instance) you would hang sideways - or worse, you'd be forced to fall sideways.

I'm not sure that that would be the best way to give yourself a leg up, I really don't know if it would be less hassle (you would only be able to clip a hanger from one direction and you'd have to get them from a pre-set side of your body). If you need extra help, get your partner to Pre-climb and leave the draws in place for your pink-point.

Yeah most of those big walls have paths down the back that are MUCH faster to hike down then to rap. Hannold would get his shoes from his camera crew or a harness from his safety crew.
