That is both freaky and enjoyable.

TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

If the company was in Dire Straits, they'd be twisting by the pool.

My husband's life revolves around video games. by IFuckingHateVideoGamin relationships

[–]petdance 3 points4 points ago

Do not approach this as "this is unhealthy", because that is not your place to judge, and doing so is just accusing him of being a bad person, and that will go nowhere.

What are the effects on YOU? What is the problem YOU want solved? Do you not have enough income? Are you feeling ignored? Has your sex life disappeared? Those are problems that you can address.

Those questions aren't rhetorical: What ARE the effects on you? Why does it bother you that he plays video games 80 hours a week? I'm not saying your concerns aren't, but I'm trying to get you to say what the real problems are. If he lived alone, this wouldn't be a problem, but it's the effects on you that are the problem.

Please go to an Al-Anon meeting. They are everywhere. They will not tell you what to do, but you will find others who have been in your situation and who have gotten through it, and that can help you get through it as well.

I think the White Stripes have done developing.

The Illinois Senate voted 55-0 to ban employers from requiring workers or job applicants to grant access to social media. by 00000000000in chicago

[–]petdance 1 point2 points ago

This legislation is harmless and yet pointless. The "trend" of employers demanding access to social media of candidates is not a trend at all.

From my blog in April: The nameless "they" and the Facebook & job interview trend that isn't a trend.

TIL Andrew Jackson was the only president to pay off the entire US debt, and it caused panic. by AlastairEvansin todayilearned

[–]petdance 2 points3 points ago

The entire US debt back then was only $20. He was then honored with his portrait on the $20 bill by the US Treasury for his achievement.

No? Well, I think it would have been a good story.

"Apparently, the Romero camp wasn't in the mood to play along, so the game ended up with the name Plants vs. Zombies, or PvZ for those in the know."

When an article pulls out a weasel word like "apparently", my [Citation required] filter goes off.

You want the Automator. It's a standard bit of OS X in your /Applications folder.

TIL Penn Jillette (from Penn&Teller) has NEVER used drugs or drank alcohol, yet still pursues the legal right to use both. by SupahNoobin todayilearned

[–]petdance 3 points4 points ago

It's notable because society is filled with those who give a damn about what others do in their private lives. That OP finds it noteworthy to point out shows that non-selfish interest in the freedom of others is not highly publicized in our society, and that we still have a long way to go.

TIL Penn Jillette (from Penn&Teller) has NEVER used drugs or drank alcohol, yet still pursues the legal right to use both. by SupahNoobin todayilearned

[–]petdance 10 points11 points ago

I have never used drugs, and haven't had any alcohol for 20+ years and pursue the legal right to use both as well.

I'm not gay but I support the right for gay people to get married.

I'm not a religious nutjob but I support the rights of the Westboro Baptist Church to peaceably assemble and protest.

It's not crazy, and shouldn't be remarkable, to support the rights of others even when those rights don't directly benefit you. That more of America is supporting gay marriage is an indicator that people are understanding this.

TIL that Bill Cosby spoke out against giving the death penalty to the guy who shot and killed his own son. by bnghle234in todayilearned

[–]petdance 1 point2 points ago

Probably he feels, as many do, that killing another person is wrong and that capital punishment is a blot on our society.

Shame on you protesters: What I saw from the protesters over the weekend made me not want to support their cause. Details inside. by moderate_extremistin chicago

[–]petdance 0 points1 point ago

Elsewhere in (I think) this thread I hold that page up as an example of how poorly the protesters get their message across.

That page is a list of data points. There's no context to it. Why are these things bad that are listed? Worst of all, there is literally nothing on that page or elsewhere on the site that I've found that says "Here is what we want to see changed".

I want to be on the side of the protesters, but what are they striving for? US out of NATO? Shutting down the entire military? I can't tell, and therefore I have nothing to support.

Why not? One of the activists chose to smash your car window.
