TROPHY CASE

I feel bad having to reboot this guy... almost made it 5 years. by hajderin sysadmin

[–]richardstallmanstoe 0 points1 point ago

I haven't used it since oracle acquired them, but they were awesome. It wouldn't surprise me if oracle destroyed the product though, they are like hp that way.

I do agree that servers should be rebooted on occaison, your services should be designed in such a way that rolling or dropping a server or even a couple shouldn't affect your overall service uptime.

With virtualization, this kind of availability is even easier and cheaper to attain.

Windows 7 Enterprise? by hankinatorin sysadmin

[–]richardstallmanstoe 0 points1 point ago

Enterprise is just like ultimate, but designed to be licensed and activated via KMS instead of MAK. KMS is the replacement for the old volume license keys, (now called multiple activation keys MAK), and it renders the machine inactive if it hasn't talked to the kms server in x number of days (default being 180). Works with office 2010.

Pro is just like ultimate, sans windows media center I believe. There is no difference in options with AD otherwise.

I'm currently asking Logitech for Linux support for the Performance MX mouse, and possibly other products. Please join me; let them see our numbers. by FredL2in linux

[–]richardstallmanstoe 0 points1 point ago

i have this mouse, it works fine in linux. i think you have to pair it in windows to the adapter, but it works fine in linux otherwise, and i think its even documented.

There may not be a special GUI to configure the buttons, but on my D630, the buttons are detectable in xev afaik.

Have you checked your backups lately? by diversionmaryin sysadmin

[–]richardstallmanstoe 0 points1 point ago*

We did the same thing. Push them to calculate the storage needs and then add like 50%. We relied on them too heavily to estimate things like dedup caches and overall storage and growth predictions, and bought an appropriately sized, but not to scalable SAN solution (ie: an EQ) and we are full up on B2D within three months of deployment.

We should have purchased an VNXe, and may do so anyway and move the EQ to the test environment.

anyhow, it is very good, but some of the backups take a loooong time. Exchange (for 2k3 cluster with ~1500 boxes) runs 24/7 almost for us, and this is using incremental backups. Sharepoint backups dont restore all that well in 2010 (ie: it fucks up page elements) and take a long time, so we are still using DocAve for sharepoint backups.

Also, im not sure what it was, but we cannot/are not backing up our ESX vms at the VDI level (system OS backups yes), and im not sure why because i think we payed for it. I know there is some issue with doing it for us. Ill ask our admin in charge of backups and the deployment on monday. I still need to get some training, but have done a bunch of the basic stuff (schedule/setup backups, run a restore, change tapes) and its pretty intuitive inho.

Simpana is a very good product, and legions beyond Symantec, but their sales reps can oversell the product imho.

marijuana can be addictive, the same way gambling can be addictive, sex can be addictive, WoW can be addictive, BF3 can be addictive etc etc.

Anything can be addicitve. And it is a drug, so well, she was right.

Its simply not physically addicitve like etOH, opiates etc.

Wireless Issue. Please help. by Strangers67in techsupport

[–]richardstallmanstoe 1 point2 points ago

So let me get this straight.

No updates were installed and the driver hasnt changed. In fact you re-instaled the driver just to be sure.

The card is powered on, and the adapter is connected/detected in the network connections dialogue and there are no errors in device manager.

The antennas are connected (to the right =/- side respectively) and the card is reseated and that has been checked twice.

Yet you cant find any networks? Can you manually try and connect to a network.

It really sounds like the antennas aren’t secured or the card isnt properly seated. Provided the rest of the above are true, there is no reason the card should not be working.

My home apparently has "structured wiring" can the phone jacks be converted to Ethernet to create a wired network? by bboy1977in techsupport

[–]richardstallmanstoe 0 points1 point ago

these are what i use.. They are nice because not only are they toners, but they are function as cable checkers.

I did have to make a little RJ-11 to RJ-45 cable to tone out RJ-45 jacks (because the port on the end of the toner is RJ-11) But it works fine, and you can buy them if you dont know how to make them.

were any updates installed as a result of the reboot?

Did you accidentally unplug or jostle the antennas from the card on the board when installing the RAM. Make sure the card and antennas are secure since you were messing with hardware.

You will need to re terminate that box to a patch panel. Something like a this. Then change any RJ11 jacks to RJ45 and you should be good. Make sure to use the same spec across the house (568A or B)I personally have mostly seen 568B used but i hear A is popular in residential homes. I use B in mine though. That should do it. It should afix that box fine by the looks of it, i think i have one very similar.)

[Edit]: This is the pic i used to reference before i rewired an entire office suite one day and it just came natural

haha. what happens if you revert your RAM back to 8 GB?

what do you mean your wireless capability is gone? Is the adaptor disabled in the adapter properties even though the radio is on?

[–]richardstallmanstoe 1 point2 points ago

i believe logons are Event ID 672 in the security logs. Further if you shut your computer down, you can see when it is booted by looking for 6006 (Event Viewer Shutdown) and 6005 (Event viewer Startup) in the system logs. These are the first and last services to turn on/off during your normal startup operations.

Off topic, but airport in orlando? I do remember Eastern had their gates on the eastern most side of Tampa airport back in the day, but that shuttle seems too close to be tampa.

FYI Eastern was the shit, my mom worked for them and we used to fly all over the place for free, but since i was family of an employee, i had to wear a suit, even when i was like 4 years old. But back then people got dressed up to travel, not like the greyhound busses with wings that cart us around these days.

Apple's idea of server grade hardware by Pineconein hardware

[–]richardstallmanstoe 1 point2 points ago

i think it depends on the model you get with them. Back in the day i was hugely anti-seagate, especially around the time when they bought Maxtor, and what a POS maxtor was at the time.

But they have models that can be reliable and i did my research when buying drives for both my home arrays and for arrays at work and ive been happy.

Conversely when doing said research, i noticed reports of 1-2 TB WD blacks stating they had unusually high failure rates and to avoid them like the plague. I thinkt he 1.5TB model was okay but the 1 and 2 TB models were for some reason horrendous. This was confirmed by some dumbasses at my regional sites buying drobos and WD blacks for some storage (against my reccomendation) and they have had so many failures and such a lack of support from DataRobotics its damn near comical.

I have been using 1TB Seagate Constellation ES's in servers for a long time. They are more expensive than most SATA drives but i have had several running in a file server that made it over 5 years with no issue. In fact i popped open some R510s and R710s with SATA drives at work the other day, and whaddya know, Dell was using Constellation ES drives for those too.

Ive been using 2Tb Barracuda XTs in my ESXi servers for a while as well at home, they are doing just fine after two years of uptime.
