That's great and all, but that wasn't what I was talking about. They said "if we magically got rid of every gun in the world today, we would still have violent crime." I pointed out that guns have properties that make them inordinately effective in committing violent crimes. Unless you mean to contend that the only circumstance where guns actually are used is to "protect a person against an assault by another person who possesses superior physical strength", I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Guns may be only a method, but they are a method that is specifically designed to kill living things as efficiently and successfully as possible. They enable that goal far more effectively than knives, swords, clubs, bats, fists, hammers, screwdrivers, using a vehicle as a weapon, and so on. This is at least worth taking into consideration regardless of your stance on gun laws.

These studies can persist in the public consciousness for decades. I should point out that the onus is not on us to trust that every anonymous request for survey participants is being made in good faith and not for nefarious purposes. Rather, the onus is on the researcher to show why we have reason to trust them. What harm can be done? Wrong question. It's not our job to show harm. It's their job to prove their trustworthiness.
