US House Stealthily Passes Extreme Pro-Israel Legislation - The House bill basically provides Israel with a blank check drawn on the U.S. taxpayer to maintain its “qualitative military edge” over all of its neighbors combined. by Mind_Virusin politics

[–]sa7ouri 6 points7 points ago

That would've made some sense if the US didn't have Saudi Arabia and Jordan as big (and more influential) allies in the region. Also, the Mubarak government of Egypt was a US puppet government for 30 years until it fell last year. The US doesn't need Israel as an ally in the region.

Hi reddit! I have an amazing idea for a website that could be a real game changer, but I don't know how to take the first step. Any advice? by BlasphemyAwayin ask

[–]sa7ouri 2 points3 points ago

Not trying to put you down, but there is 99.99% chance that it's been done already. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Search was dead when Google came. Same thing with MP3 players and Apple, social networking and Facebook, etc.

Kellogg is facing anger on social-media sites because of complaints that its popular Kashi brand of cold cereals doesn't live up to the company's "natural" billing on ads and boxes. by skreendreamz1in business

I loved their Honey Almond Flax cereal, and used to have it almost every morning for breakfast, until I read about this research which linked brown rice syrup to high levels of arsenic. The study didn't identify Kashi as a specific product with that issue, but I didn't want to take any chances. At that point I stopped buying it, which sucks because I really loved the taste.

I heard a new law in Palestine that men cannot serve women in labor jobs.

That is completely false. Many Palestinian women work just like their male counterparts. Have you ever been to Ramallah?

I don't see how Palestine was ever secular in the last 100 years as Jews and Homosexuals are murdered on the spot.

Then please visit any of the Palestinian towns around Jerusalem (ex. Abu Dis or Silwan or Silwad). Many Jewish Israelis come there for things like car and electronic repair because it's much cheaper than Israel. They would even be wearing their yarmulkes. I've seen a few myself.

No worries. There are neighborhoods in the US which I'm more afraid to enter than places in Jerusalem (especially post 9/11).

Things are not black and white as you seem to be implying. Both Israel and Hamas have done horrible things, which they continue to blame each other for. In reality, you can argue a case for both of them (Hamas: Israel is collectively punishing us, creating a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, so we won't stop any violence against them because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Israel: Hamas control Gaza and are not trying to stop rockets into Israel).

I've also been mistaken for an Israeli many times (in TLV airport, around Jerusalem, etc). But that is irrelevant.

Your original statement that only Muslims should feel safe there is wrong.

Radical religion is a problem everywhere in the world. It's a shame that it's spreading in the Middle East, but I feel that an improved economy and future prospects will dampen that increase.

As for the right wing influence on Israeli government, it is nothing new. It started with the 1967 war and has continued. The only time when the Israeli government showed some leftist leanings was in the early 90s when they signed the Oslo accords. The result? The Israeli prime minister was assassinated by a right-wing Israeli who quickly developed a fan club and labeled a hero.

The Gaza Strip would have had autonomy if it wasn't being controlled by an organization that doesn't respect cease-fire agreements.

Hamas has observed the cease fire since the end of the Gaza war in 2008. You are confusing Hamas with Islamic Jihad.

Traditionally, Palestinians have been a very secular people. The unfortunate rise of radical Islam is a by-product of years of oppression. This has happened many times throughout the ages where a politically oppressed people will turn towards extreme versions of religion for relief. Still Palestinians remain much more secular than other Arab countries (Hamas doesn't represent the majority of Palestinians).

in the case is Israel, then the vast majority are indeed secular, yet the government is constantly caving in to the demands of the right wing religious settlers which exacerbates the land ownership issues.

My point is that saying Israel is secular hence I support it is a very naive way of looking at the issue.

Serious question:

what do you find wrong with the Arab Peace Initiative? Even if you don't agree with it 100%, don't you think it's a decent starting point for future negotiations?

[–]sa7ouri 47 points48 points ago

The Arab Peace Initiative has been on the table for 10 years now. It promises complete normalization of ties with all Arab states if Israel withdraws to 1967 borders. Guess who is refusing?

Unfortunately, the Israeli government is not interested in peace since they are in a position of power, and can do whatever they want.

Upcoming app SnapNPlay, take pictures of sheet music to play it! by VitoCassisiin Android

[–]sa7ouri 1 point2 points ago

Can it take a pre-existing image, or do you have to snap it from the camera?

There are panorama apps (like Pano, for example) that stitches images together into one big pic. It would be nice if SnapNPlay can read such an image and play it in one shot.

"Arabia" is a pretty big place with a huge variety of peoples and cultures. There is lots to be seen from history to nature.

Yes there are the racist idiots who make it look like a hell hole, but those are few compared to the secular, level-headed majority. The problem is that those idiots are the ones in charge (not in all countries, thanks to the Arab Spring), and garner all the news headlines.

[–]sa7ouri 5 points6 points ago

stop your racist drivel please. Many Muslim countries have no problems with the Israeli passport and issue them valid visas. Others don't have a peace treaty with Israel, and hence don't welcome its citizens. This is normal between any two countries that are on such a situation. It is not specific to Israel.

I understand the lack of trust, and I can see how this leads to discrimination on a personal level. This exists everywhere in the world and is not an Israeli-specific symptom. But I don't see how this translates to demolishing buildings or refusing permits or other acts by the government. The government, by definition, should work to help all of its citizens equally. That is not happening in Israel.

[–]sa7ouri 10 points11 points ago

Officially you are correct that Israeli Arabs have full citizenship rights. But, from the article you cited:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_citizens_of_Israel#Civil_rights

a number of official sources acknowledge that Arab citizens of Israel experience discrimination in many aspects of life

and the article goes on to list some such discrimination including demolishing buildings, refusal to issue building permits, excluding Arab towns from government services, and others. Even the US State Department has said that Israel has done "little to reduce institutional, legal, and societal discrimination against the country's Arab citizens."

I am sure that many non-Arab Israelis don't discriminate against Arabs, and want a peaceful life to everyone. But the fact is that such discrimination exists, and needs to be dealt with.

Arm unveils 1mm x 1mm 32bit chip: "years of battery life" by _Garbage_in technology

[–]sa7ouri 94 points95 points ago

To nitpick, the title is wrong. It is not a 1mm x 1mm chip, but rather a 1mm x 1mm core. Depending on the number of cores and other functionality, a chip that uses such a core will be much bigger.

Cool and exciting nonetheless, and a step in the right direction.
