I get these about once a month from my ex of over a year. Don't stick your dick in crazy, gentlemen. by gayboyproblemsin gaybros

[–]salamanque1 2 points3 points ago

I switched my number, so the dude points himself at my doorstep, I refuse to let him in, so he sleeps in front of my place. That's a year after we broke up. Then online it gets even more complicated as he's friends with some of my friends on facebook and he's tried to stir some shit up with them and my family. Kid is crazy. You never know what to expect with these people. It's scary sometimes.

Switzerland is discussing a guaranteed minimum income (to replace all other benefit programs). by cjet79in Economics

[–]salamanque1 2 points3 points ago

It's very far from become the new law though, this is only an initiative that still needs to collect signatures and then be considered credible by the federal Assembly before there's an actual referendum. The title of this post is a bit misleading, Switzerland isn't discussing anything yet and remember that Swiss people just voted recently against having a mandatory 6 weeks vacations per year for everyone.

Muscle up = People take you more seriously? by LGnoob31in Fitness

[–]salamanque1 43 points44 points ago

Actually yes, people seem to pay more attention but at the same time they expect you to not be very smart if you're muscular, at least in my case, I've heard people say to me "wow I wasn't expecting you to know so much stuff..." or "you're actually quite smart..."

Still trying to figure out whether those are compliments or not.

We see the sky as blue during the day because of our atmosphere, composed of different gases which radiates and scatter certain light waves coming from the sun. The moon doesn't have an atmosphere and so even during the day, someone on the moon would see the "universe" and the other stars.

You learn through your mistakes but it's fair to say that almost everyone has exaggerated certain things at one point to appear smarter or cooler to others.

Why does sleepiness come in waves? by Hadrronin askscience

Is this Circadian rhythm accurate for everyone, or does it depend when you go to sleep and when you wake up?

We all talk shit about Twilight. What are some historical examples of books that were criticized for literary quality but were still very popular with the general public? by elkresurgencein books

[–]salamanque1 12 points13 points ago

Michael Crichton's "State of Fear". Climate change deniers point to this book as scientific evidence despite the fact that this book is full of errors and no climate scientist would agree with it. Yet it's been very popular.

Who here actually support Rick Santorum? I want to hear from you. by TheSeeker00in AskReddit

[–]salamanque1 2 points3 points ago

who holds traditional Catholic views on economic and social policy

This is a secular country, why is this important? And more importantly, every single candidate to run for president has claimed to have Christian values so what's more special about him?

What about the fact that he denies climate change and thinks evolution and science in general is bullshit?

People just don't give a fuck. At my gym, the manager decided to put a poster on every single piece of equipment saying "Please put the weights back when you're done" and it still doesn't work. Public shaming is the only way. If you see someone about to leave without putting the weights back, we must mention it in front of everyone...except if the guy is twice bigger than you of course.

Global Warming Close to Becoming Irreversible - The world is reaching tipping points that will make it irreversibly hotter, making this decade critical in efforts to contain global warming, scientists warn by anutensilin environment

[–]salamanque1 4 points5 points ago

No but the political system of the United States makes it easier for oil and gas companies to lobby congressmen. Also, the US is the biggest producer of greenhouse gases (technically China is slightly ahead but it's only because the US has shipped all its manufacturing over there), which means that any solution to the climate change problem will need some action from the US, but as of yet the US is the one country that doesn't make real efforts. They haven't even signed the Kyoto protocol (191 nations have signed it), because the argument at the time was "it will slow down our economy"....yeah, THAT will slow down the economy. What's the argument now?

The petition, paper, and letter were entirely unrelated to the National Academy of Science, which issued a strong denunciation of the petition project as deliberately deceptive and an affirmation of the consensus in favor of the reality of anthropogenic global warming. Subsequent investigations of the signatories found a minority of them to be climate scientists, or even scientists of any kind.

We are already learning how to adjust, take for example countries like the Maldives Islands or Kiribati which are already planning a mass exodus and cities like New York have infrastructural plans to adjust for the rise of water in the future. Populations will move eventually, the biggest problems will be dealing with resources like water and food which will become more and more scarce as the globe heats up. There already isn't enough drinkable water for everyone. Living in the US you wouldn't notice this, but we waste so much water to grow our food and make our clothes, to fill our swimming pools and make sure our golf courses look perfectly green, but most countries don't have this lifestyle. The US is still in denial about food and water issues but it will eventually catch up with us. It already has in the sense that some states like Arizona have to import most of their water.

The rich will still have an advantage there though so they probably do not really care as much

How are we able to calculate the age of the universe? by salamanque1in askscience

[–]salamanque1[S] 0 points1 point ago

Wow I'm amazed with this kind of stuff. Number 2 brings another question though: how can we calculate the density of the universe if we haven't been able yet to observe and measure its limits?
