How to stand up for my mom... by Phoenix1Risingin SRSDisabilities

[–]sandhouse 4 points5 points ago

Anybody with any sense could see that your mother's weight problem was brought on by her medical problems. You can move around much when you're in pain and disabled. You lose everything. The ability to support yourself, enjoy your hobbies, getting out of the house, and you become a burden. You become depressed. Maybe some of your meds cause weight gain. And then, one of the only, maybe THE only really pleasurable thing left in your life that is affordable and doable is food and people look down on you for not wanting to give that up. Maybe dieting wouldn't even help because of your meds and because you can't move around. It's extremely hard to diet when you're living in pain all the time.

This really pisses me off. Get pissed at people and defend your mother!

X-POST FROM /R/lgbtHavens, /R/ainbow, from /R/askreddit I've just found myself homeless. Third day now and I'm out of shelters. Any tips? by real-dreamerin AtheistHavens

Just asking because if you do, even as a transwoman, you are a lot better off than a lot of people. You can keep your job and get out of your situation much more easily. You have transportation to work. You have a place to sleep. It's not pleasant but your roof over your head is your car. You can scout around for safer places to park at night. Quieter parts of town with an empty parking lot - not too secluded, not too populated. Go after eleven pm and leave right after sunrise and you likely won't be noticed. If the cops do notice you ... and they eventually probably will. They will probably be rude but can't do anything but ask to search your car and tell you to move along. I highly recommend NEVER having alcohol or drugs in your car and keeping it tidy. Never litter around your car. Just let them search you. As annoying as that is, it gives them confidence in you as a homeless person they might encounter again.

Showers are not hard to be gotten. Any place that caters to the less fortunate will be open to letting you use their showers. I asked at a place that wasn't a shelter but dispensed food once a week and they had a shower. I asked at the desk and the desk person asked a superior. They told me to keep it clean and didn't so much as ask my name or get nosy about my situation. If asking around for daily shower doesn't appeal to you and you have an income just join a gym.

Keep yourself looking respectable. Keep smiling. Don't let your situation hurt your work and before you know it you'll have enough to get a place to live again.

I don't recommend talking about your situation to your coworkers unless you have become close friends with them. Good luck.

Even if you live with your parents just list yourself as having no income and no assets (assuming you have none). They will give you a card (probably red) that you will use to identify yourself every time you visit.

I go to Curtis V. Cooper clinic on Broad st. You're charged according to your income so I pay 7 bucks a visit and that includes any shots or blood tests or xrays I get. You can drop in but you have to get there really early - I would go at least 30 minutes before they open - and stand in line. Try to be in the first four or five people in line or you could be waiting several hours. If you make an appointment it takes 1 to 3 months depending on if you need a doc or just a nurse. Bring proof of income (some pay stubs) and address (utility bill or explain you are homeless) and id and all that on your first visit.

Just finished Wool: Omnibus Edition. Wow, amazing. What should I read next? by buck_fasciain books

[–]sandhouse 1 point2 points ago

Hugh Howey also wrote Half Way Home which is written for teens but I'm 28 and enjoyed it immensely. I'm crazy about Hugh Howey. He's continuing the Wool story in a series of prequels but I'm waiting until the whole set is finished to buy an omnibus. Waiting to see what happens next just kills me. But I have read part of the first story and it looks very promising.

I know very little about self-diagnosis of health issues. Can someone please tell what is going on right now? by zhacquesin Health

[–]sandhouse 3 points4 points ago

The main thing wrong with you is that you aren't in the ER right now. Rectal bleeding is and emergency symptom and no amount of green tea and rest is going to help you. Pick up the phone immediately and get a ride to the hospital or call 911 and ask for an ambulance. I am in no way exaggerating or kidding you.

Looking through this blog I thought I might start reading it again and then I saw this map and it literally struck fear into my chest.

A note here - usually this is fine but if you go to a pain clinic/specialist they will drug test you immediately and on a regular basis on threat of cutting you off.

Help, please by Spragsin fibro

[–]sandhouse 3 points4 points ago

Taking a hot bath and totally submersing yourself if the tub is big enough can give you a half hour of relief (until the water starts to cool). You'll be in pain again as soon as you step out again but it gives your mind a moment to not go insane. If you can it's a good idea to go to a pain specialist since the treatment of pain is completely shitty everywhere. Pain docs at least (hopefully) know what they're doing and know that no risk of side effects is worth avoiding when somebody is in torture-level pain 24/7 for the rest of their lives.

I need a lot more information about this supposedly amazing drug that is conspiratorially being suppressed before I sign something about it. There must be some real reason it isn't getting the funding it needs. That's my guess as a skeptic anyway. Please don't take this as a solid no as I'll readily change my view of it, as I said with more information.

You have to read Guns, Germs, and Steel. It can be dense and tedious at times but the knowledge it will give you will blow your mind. Also, the title is totally unfitting. Should be called ... Geography and Agriculture in the Development of Human Societies ... so you can see why they gave it the other title.

Write a letter to the paper. If it's well written they might print it.

I also have "silent migraines" which is a migrain with all the symptoms except the pain. Pretty weird but lucky. (Sometimes have the pain too but not usually). Anyway, it usually consists of pretty bad visual fuckedupedness. It's basically a shimmering, psychadelicish crescent that makes it impossible to do anything. I just lay in bed until it goes away. Effectively blind. Not saying it has anything to do with with your issues. If you're still worried about it you should try to see a different kind of doctor.
