How would I program specific search functions across multiple applications? by SSDeathstarin software

[–]sealclubber 1 point2 points ago

It sounds like this would be a custom program.

How I would lay it out: Below the search bar, have a results window that has either 3 panes (so you can view everything at once) or 3 tabs.

The first pane would encapsulate a program like Everything, which can be set to only index certain folders on your hard drive.

The second pane would output the results of google queries on individual sites. Since, afaik, you can only do one site-specific query at a time via google, this pane would have the results of all of them - a query for "site:foo1.com searchterm" and "site:foo2.com searchterm" etc.

The third pane would just have the results of a normal google search ("searchterm").

AutoIt would be a good choice for the programming language, since it's quick to set up and is good for remote-controlling other applications. (Somebody else suggested AutoHotKey, which is basically a specialized version or fork of AutoIt.)

SSSS: This ultra-realistic video was rendered in REALTIME. This. Is the future of gaming. by sealclubberin Games

[–]sealclubber[S] 35 points36 points ago

A lot of the comments here seem to be pointing out one thing or another that is missing from this tech demo. Things like:

  • Animation
  • Hair
  • Background models
  • AI

Folks, I'm sorry, but many of you are missing the point. This tech demo does one thing, and it does it damn well. It's a realtime skin shader. Everything else is irrelevant.

For some perspective: If you were to try to render that same model, at the same level of realism (with SSS) in something like 3DS Max, it would probably take a few minutes, maybe around a half-hour.

For one frame.

Let that sink in for a moment.

This new shader does (practically) the same thing at... what? 60 fps? 100 fps? And it's doing it on a high poly model - not a low-poly game model - and it's running on your video card, right now.

Never put "excellent communication skills" on your resume. by petdancein jobs

[–]sealclubber 4 points5 points ago

Bah.

Katie: “I talked to the project leader, and explained what was going wrong that he hadn’t heard about, and we worked on ways to make sure everybody could keep track of the deliverables, and get them to the consultants. And then the project leader asked me to do status reports for upper management. It all worked really well.”

Andy: “So would you feel comfortable saying ‘Reworked project process to increase communication, both vertically and horizontally, across the company and with outside consultants?’ And can you specify how many people were on the project, too?”

Andy's version just compresses everything into bigger words, while conveying less information.

Katie's problem is that she actually does have excellent communication skills - but that's not what most companies are looking for. They don't really want "excellent"... they want "sanitized".

ELIC: How does a refrigerator work? by jellystonein ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]sealclubber 12 points13 points ago

Each refrigerator comes with a colony of small animals, which hide when the door is opened. This colony is called a "Freon".

When the door is closed, they run back and forth through the pipes in the back, to a nearby air conditioner, where they take a deep breath of air, then run back into the refrigerator and exhale. If they run quick enough, it keeps the food cool.

Every once in a while, they take a break to eat and drink some of the food... which is why you can sometimes hear sounds like gurgling, slurping, and grinding.

If they pee, it kills them, so they have to hold it their whole lives to stay alive. When they can't hold it any longer, the colony dies, the refrigerator warms up, and this is what the experts call a "Freon leak".

Dear internet, I'm a 21 year old dude who's been developing a science-based, 100% space MMO for the last two years. We have a website, and and there are many ingame screenshots you can check out. Wish us luck, Reddit; You can go look at the site now since this small indie mmo is actually released :) by FracOMacin gaming

How much is a subscription?

The only thing I've been able to find is:

I want to be encouraging, because from the video alone this looks like an awesome game - but TBH, those prices seem a little steep. And I still don't know how much a subscription costs (which I'd like to know before installing something.)

New to PC gaming... Tell me about some really good games that I don't know about. by alllset07in gaming

[–]sealclubber 1 point2 points ago

Welcome to the master race! :-)

(You may want to consider reposting in /r/truegaming or /r/pcgaming... may get more or better responses there.)

First of all, if you haven't already, download Steam. (There's a green button at the top of the page to install it.) There's some good cheap stuff on Desura as well... stuff you probably won't find on consoles. Also: Good Old Games.

Are you on a budget? You may want to subscribe to /r/steamdeals so that you can see what awesomeness has just been made available for cheap.

Do you have a few hundred dollars to throw, and want to experience some incredible immersion? Get yourself a Novint Falcon.

Check out the faq for this subreddit - it's a great place to start when looking for what's out there.

Some specific game suggestions:

  • Dwarf Fortress (extremely hard to learn, extremely addictive once you do)
  • Minecraft (it turns out that sucky graphics can still be fun!)
  • Towns (haven't played it, but heard good things about it)
  • Terraria (haven't played it, but heard good things about it)
  • Galactic Civilizations II (highly addictive RTS fun)
  • Mount&Blade: Warband (and "With Fire & Sword")

I should have said, "Not all particles have mass". Or: "Not all particles are matter."

Perhaps I should consider a career in science journalism...

Dog's Life... by spankrin funny

[–]sealclubber 1 point2 points ago

Actually... and I know you're joking, but you may be right. The sense of smell (and, thus, taste) is extremely important to dogs - like sight is for humans. They perceive the universe through their nose - it's their dominant sense. Vision is almost an afterthought (like smell is for us).

To understand an object, a human might try to look at it from all angles. For a dog... well, it has to be sampled to be fully understood.

And a dustpan has got to be a total mindfuck for a dog. I mean, think about it - it has scents from all over the house... multiple snapshots of the floor, from different times, all compressed into one weird object.

Your dog isn't "chewing a dust pan" - he's destructively analyzing it.

Abusive people of Reddit: Wtf? by Dusty_Starin self

Try unsubscribing from the subreddits that are dominated by a single close-minded viewpoint (like /r/athiesm and /r/politics), and explore some of the ones out there that encourage healthy conversations.

Maybe check out /r/truereddit, and explore some of the links on their sidebar. You'll find a whole new world out there. I mean, nothing's perfect... but the average maturity level there is a lot higher.

Also: Mean people suck.

Paranoid Parrot by YSCapitalin AdviceAnimals

[–]sealclubber 1 point2 points ago*

Reminds me of this one time, I ended up in the middle of a stupid hot sauce competition with a bunch of random dudes I met on the street. I brought some Pure Cap.

Now, Pure Cap is some strong stuff. It's a capsaicin extract, rated at 500,000 Scoville units... so it's about 100 times hotter than a jalapeño, or 5 times hotter than a habanero... or about the same as some pepper sprays.

You're supposed to add a few drops of the stuff to a big vat of chili, to spice the whole thing up. But this one guy, on a stupid dare, squirted some directly onto a chip, and ate it.

That was a Bad Thing.

He lasted about 30 seconds before his entire gastrointestinal system staged a violent revolt, and he bolted for the nearest restroom.

Unfortunately, he did not think to wash his hands first. His fingers still had traces of Pure Cap on them.

When he emerged from the bathroom about 45 minutes later, he was a broken shell of the man he used to be.

TL;DR: Man pepper-sprayed his junk, because he didn't wash his hands before he went to the bathroom.
