I'm looking for opinions on 2-node Hyper-V clusters. And also how they compare to 2-node VMware cluster by spiralsmurfin sysadmin

What about running vCenter server as a vm in a 2-node cluster?

Well yeah, but it was during a deployment weekend and part of my planned testing before signing off on the project.

And if you fail nodes within a span of a few minutes, does the cluster take a shit on itself? What does VMware use to maintain cluster quorum?

Node/Disk Majority with Quorum lun on the SAN.

Well then that is expected behavior, I am looking for feedback from someone on a 2-node cluster.

I wish I understood half of what you just wrote. Hyper-V has Live Migration which is not the same as vMotion.

Pulling the management and heartbeat cable from the NICs. This basically simulates host power or connectivity failure. The VMs will come over to the 2nd host, not Live of course, they shutdown and then start. But if I bring back 1st host, and then say 5 minutes later do the same test, the cluster is borked and requires manual intervention to restart cluster services, etc.

best way to centrally manage local admin passwords? by spiralsmurfin sysadmin

[–]spiralsmurf[S] 0 points1 point ago

Right. I think i'll just discuss with my team the best available options and make a determination. Thanks for the input.

This is what I'm leaning towards and but it's not very autonomous and requires any engineer building a new machine to run through this process.

I know! I'm struggling for a solution...there must be something.

Sure, if you have the correct password.

This still leaves the password exposed, I am looking for something more secure than scripting. Something like group policy preferences without the inherent flaws.

Because sometimes you need local admin credentials if there is a loss of connectivity or relationship to the domain.

+1, I hear people talking down GoDaddy on a regular basis, but I can't say I've ever had an issue with them. What experiences lead people to this?

Anyone using ShoreTel? by hutchingspin sysadmin

[–]spiralsmurf 0 points1 point ago

I was just reading the documentation for the current release and it explicitly states that hyper v is unsupported. While I do think it should work fine, there are concerns of being denied support because of the configuration. Have you ever experienced any problems? We run them in VMWare all day with no issue.

Windows Server Licensing Issue by devhamin sysadmin

[–]spiralsmurf 0 points1 point ago

Standard is 1:1, Enterprise is 1:4, Datacenter is unlimited but licensed per CPU. If you use the virtualization licensing benefits, you cannot do 1+1 or 1+4, it's just 1 if you want to use hyper-v and 1 or 4 if you use a different hypervisor.

Need some input on a backup appliance for 40+ servers, virtual and physical by spiralsmurfin sysadmin

[–]spiralsmurf[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well the existing gear has the ability to do built-in virtualization for a failed server. If a physical server dies, I can power on a snapshot as a virtual machine. Not anything to use for extended period of time, but it's something that has been very helpful. Sure a similar solution could exist using any backup that support bare metal recovery and I could recover to a standby VMhost, this is a more seamless process, just not really up to the scale of the environment.

[–]spiralsmurf[S] 0 points1 point ago

If either a physical or VM server fails, these appliances/software will allow me to turn on a snapshot of the server and run from that temporarily?
